Trois-Rivières (meaning Three Rivers in French) is a city in the province of Quebec, Canada. It has the powers of a regional county municipality. It is located in the administrative region of Mauricie. The city lies along the Saint Lawrence River at the mouth of the Saint-Maurice River, in central Quebec.

It includes or is part of the electoral districts of Champlain, Maskinongé and Trois-Rivières at the provincial level and of Berthier-Maskinongé and Trois-Rivières at the federal level.

The city is home to the main campus of the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivières.

Geography

Trois-Rivières is located at the coordinates 46°21′00″N 72°33′00″W / 46.35000, -72.55000. According to Statistics Canada, it has a total area of 288.9 km² and is one of the 1,134 municipalities into which the territory of the province of Quebec is administratively divided.

Demographics

According to Canada's 2011 census, there were 131 338 people residing in this city with a population density of 454,6 hectares/km2. Census data showed that out of 126 293 people registered in 2006, there was a population increase of 5045 inhabitants in 2011 (in 2011).Crecimiento4%). The total number of private properties was 65 528 with a density of 226,82 properties per km2. The total number of private homes occupied by regular residents was 61,390. The metropolitan area of the city had 151 773 inhabitants in 2011. By 2004, 91.2 per cent of the population was Francophone.

Administration and politics

The city is governed by a council consisting of the mayor and 14 councilors elected every four years.
