Trapa is the only genus of the monotypic family Trapaceae, in the order Myrtle, which includes five species of aquatic herbs. They have submerged linear and floating rosette leaves, with a swollen petiole, rhombic and toothed. Inconspicuous, floating, hermaphroditic, regular, tetramerous flowers with a semi-inferous ovary. Fruits nuciform, coriaceous, with 4 horns. They are native to temperate regions of Asia and Africa.
