A towel is a cut of absorbent fabric, called terry cloth, whose main function is to dry the moisture in the human body through direct contact. The objects are dried using a cloth or rags.

Types of towels

Hand towel.
Beach towel.

  • One towel standing is used to dry feet.
  • One bath towel or Toallón is used to dry the body after bathing or showering. It is usually rectangular, with a typical size of about 75×150 cm. Some smaller bath towels are designed to use them as bath mats in order to support your feet and not slip when you leave the shower.
  • One beach towel is usually a little bigger than a bath towel. Although often used to dry after having been in the water, its main purpose is to provide a surface on which to lie. Towels are often used for purposes other than drying things or people:

  • To sit down, rest and lie down, avoid direct contact with land, rock, chair, etc. This can be for reasons of hygiene and comfort and in saunas or other places where it is common to be naked.
  • Hairdressers use steamed towels to prepare the skin for shaving.
  • To book the sun loungers, for example to sunbathe, next to the pools or similar places (a source of discomfort for some and fun for others).
  • A towel can act as clothing or emergency blanket.
  • In Asian countries, towels (small than hand towels - usually square) are used as handkerchiefs. Both men and women wear them. The softness of the Turkish towel is the favorite for this use.
  • A hot towel can be used to wash your hands before a meal.

Culture

Towels have inspired weird ideas.

  • Douglas Adams, in his book Galactic Autostopian Guidepromises that a towel is the most useful thing a galactic hitchhiker can wear.
  • To honor Douglas Adams, on May 25 is "The Towel Day" and all Douglas Adams fans should take towels with them during that day.
  • In boxing, throwing the towel into the ring by one of the preparers meant the surrender of your boxer and therefore the loss of combat. Hence the expression throw the towelused as a synonym for desisting something.
