Top Gun (film)
Top Gun (known as Top Gun: Passion and Glory in Latin America, Top Gun: Reto a la gloria i> in Chile and Top Gun: Ídolos del aire in Spain) is a 1986 American action, drama and romance film, directed by Tony Scott and starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. The plot follows Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He and his Radar Interception Officer, Lieutenant Nick & # 34; Goose & # 34; Bradshaw have the opportunity to train at the US Navy Fighter Weapons School at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, California.
Much of the film's success is due to the spectacular scenes in the air combined with an exciting soundtrack, highlighting the song Danger Zone, by Kenny Loggins (also known for Footloose ) and Take My Breath Away, from Berlin. The soundtrack has since become one of the most popular film soundtracks to date, achieving 9x Platinum certification. Later, Tony Scott repeated the formula with the film Days of Thunder (1990) with the same leading actor.
Top Gun was released on May 16, 1986 and upon its release, the film received mixed reviews from critics. Four weeks after the release, the number of theaters showing it increased by 45%. Despite its initial mixed critical reaction, the film was a huge commercial success, grossing $356 million against a production budget of $15 million. The film maintained its popularity over the years and earned a re-release in IMAX 3D in 2013.
In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." A sequel, titled Top Gun: Maverick, was released 36 years later, on May 27, 2022, to critical and commercial success.
Argument
The opening text mentions how in 1969, the US Navy established a school for fighter pilots. It is officially known as Combat Weapons School, but recruits call it 'Top Gun'. We see several recruits and Navy men on the ships where the pilots take off or return.
Lieutenant Pete Mitchell, known as "Maverick" (Tom Cruise), is a talented and rebellious Grumman F-14 Tomcat aviator of the United States Navy. Maverick is the son of a pilot who participated in the Vietnam War, who was shot down under mysterious circumstances and was reported missing in action due to mistakes made by himself, so Maverick is fighting all the time to get rid of evil. fame that fell on his name due to the alleged failures of his father.
The film begins with Maverick and his Radar and Interception Officer, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), whom Maverick considers his only family, along with another F-14 fighter intercepting two objects located on the radar: two Russian MiG 28 (Northrop F-5) aircraft which cannot be confronted without provocation. Maverick uses a risky negative G maneuver to position himself inverted parallel to one of the MiGs and thus take a photograph. In turn, the pilot of the other F-14, Bill «Cougar» Cortell (John Stockwell), suffers a nervous breakdown when the other MiG places them in its sights and activates the IFF. of the. Both F-14s must return to the carrier due to being low on fuel, however Cougar cannot due to his panic attack. Maverick takes a heroic risk despite being almost out of fuel and successfully escorts the other F-14 back to the aircraft carrier.
Cougar retires from the service after suffering a nervous breakdown, fearing losing his wife and son. Maverick and Goose are promoted despite the reluctance of their superior and sent to the Combat Weapons School, known colloquially as "Top Gun" in Miramar, California. There, they will be tested alongside the best naval aviators.
Maverick and Goose arrive at school, where they start a rivalry with Tom «Iceman» Kazansky (Val Kilmer), considered the best pilot in his class. Maverick demonstrates his abilities, but earns reprimands due to his arrogant and undisciplined nature. He also meets Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood (Kelly McGillis), a civilian instructor and Department of Defense expert, who had been impressed by Maverick's maneuver with the MiG. They both fall in love and maintain a clandestine relationship.
In one of the practical simulated combat exercises, during a chase of one of the instructors, Iceman retreats from in front of Maverick and accidentally causes the sudden shutdown of both engines in Maverick's plane with the wake of his plane and Goose, which causes the plane to spin and quickly fall towards the sea. Both pilots eject with difficulty, but Goose hits his head on the cockpit and dies before falling into the sea. Tortured by the loss, Maverick blames himself for the accident and is unable to look the widow of his best friend, Carol (Meg Ryan), in the face. He even begins to doubt his piloting abilities and considers leaving the academy. The instructor of the Top Gun division, Mike "Viper " Metcalf (Tom Skerritt), then reveals to Maverick the fate of his father, who fell in combat in Vietnam while helping to rescue several pilots in mid-flight; «Viper» had been his companion, but the incident remained hidden as it was a secret mission. Charlie tries to convince Maverick that he should continue his career as a pilot, informing him that she is being transferred to Washington, D.C.
Maverick decides that being a pilot is his true passion and manages to graduate from the Top Gun academy, although first place is obtained by Iceman, thus culminating their confrontation. A real crisis immediately arises when the pilots are assigned to a mission to protect an American ship adrift in international waters of the Indian Ocean. Two F-14s—one of them Iceman's—encounter a squadron of five enemy MiGs; one of the F-14s is shot down and Iceman was in serious danger. Maverick is sent to support Iceman, who is harassed by the MiGs; At that moment, Maverick suffers a nervous breakdown in the face of enemy planes and appears to withdraw from combat. Finally, invoking the memory of his late friend Goose, he regains his self-esteem and rushes to Iceman's aid, managing to shoot down three enemy planes, with the remaining MiGs retreating. Maverick and Iceman return to the aircraft carrier, where they are cheered on by the crew; Iceman congratulates his partner for his act and they seal their reconciliation.
Maverick is appointed at his request to become an instructor in Top Gun. The film culminates in a bar, when Charlie plays the music with which Maverick tried to win her over during their first meeting. Charlie informs him that she intends to stay in Top Gun along with Maverick.

Sequel
According to MTV Movies Blog, Paramount Pictures has made offers to producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott to develop a sequel to Top Gun. During his press rounds to promote the film Unstoppable, Scott not only confirmed that he has already signed on for the film, but also revealed some of his ideas.
"I'm not waiting for a script (by Christopher McQuarrie). I'm going to do my homework. "I'm going to go to Fallon, Nevada, which is a completely different world now," he told the Hitfix site. "These computer experts - these guys - play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada, and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever, these guys can fly planes. Unmanned aircraft. They'll operate on them and then they'll party all night.'
He said the idea of swapping fighter pilots for computer experts came to him during a stopover in Las Vegas during a flight. He was sitting next to a young man who was sick from partying all night. When the director asked him what he does for a living, the man responded that he worked with drones in the Air Force.
"They operate these planes like they're war games, but it's real," Scott said. "This world fascinated me, because it was very different from what it originally was. But I don't want to do a remake. I don't want to do a reinvention. "I want to make a new movie," he said.
In addition, he did not want to comment on whether Tom Cruise would repeat his role in this possible sequel.
Top Gun: Maverick, sequel to the film Top Gun, has completed production, with its final release on May 27, 2022 in United States.
Miscellaneous
- The film won the Oscar Award for the Best Original Song for Berlin's Take my breath away song.
- The film was a complete recruitment success for the Navy and the United States Air Force.
- The instructor interpreted by Kelly McGillis was initially to be an officer of the US Navy; but the military opposed someone from the militia to link with another member of the Navy, and also lower rank.
- Thanks to this success the Paramount was for some years the fashion producer for the military and Jerry Bruckheimer the producer who best productions got. Thanks to this he was able to perform other works as Black Hawk Down (Black Hawk shot down in Spain or The Black Hawk Fall in other countries) that, without the help of the Army, would not have been possible.
- The planes that appear as MiG-28 in the film are actually American Northrop F-5E Tiger II, belonging to the US Navy's attack squadrons (there are squadrons dedicated to studying the tactics of the enemy planes to simulate them in flight and thus train the pilots themselves to fight them), so they are painted in black and have badges that simulate those of an undetermined communist country. It should also be clarified that the MiG-28 does not exist in fact, since, among other things, all the MiGs manufactured to date follow the tradition of being numbered in an odd way, such as the MiG 23 Flogger or the MiG 29 Fulcrum.
- The F-14s, the planes piloted by Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, were discharged at the US Navy in 2006; but the instructors against those fighting in Miramar are still in service. However, the F-14s continue to operate in the Air Force of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which has managed to keep in flight a small number of those bought by the pro-American Sah government almost thirty years ago. Another famous plane is the Skyhawk A4B (in fiction the school's aggressor plane) which was, among other things, used in the Falklands War.
- Val Kilmer has commented that since he took part in the film he can't step on an airport without someone making the joke of repeating this dialect: "Hey you! You're still dangerous, but you can fly with me whenever you want."which his character ("Iceman") tells "Maverick" (the character played by Cruise) at the end of the film.
- The rivalry between Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer was more than actionable. It is said that during the filming they never socialized and that rather they were almost never spoken.
- Top Gun has been parodied in the 1991 Hot Shots film starring Charlie Sheen, Lloyd Bridges and Valeria Golino. This film parodies a multitude of scenes from other famous films from the 1980s.
- During the shooting, the pilot and flight cameraman Art Scholl died in an air accident when his Pitts S-2 aircraft did not recover from a loss ticket and sank in the Pacific Ocean. Scholl's last words were "I have a problem - I have a real problem." The cause of the accident was a flat deck, which in normal situations should not have been a problem for the experienced pilot. However, when he filmed the turn, the extra weight of the cameras made the centrifugal force retain it in a spiral twist towards his death. Never recovered the plane or the pilot's body.
- The last line of credits at the end of the film says "This film is dedicated to Art Scholl's memory."
- This film was a huge success at the box office, raising more than $356 million worldwide with a budget of just 15 million.
- Val Kilmer was nominated in 1986 to Oscar the best cast actor for interpreting Tom “Iceman” Kazanski in Top Gun.
