The flag of Tonga was adopted on November 4, 1875.

The current Tongan flag is very similar to that of the Red Cross; in fact, and at first, it was too identical to this one, but to avoid confusion, it was replaced so that the red cruiser appeared as a canton similar to that of the flags of the British merchant navy since the XVII. The flag has been in use since 1864, but was officially adopted in 1875. The Tongan Constitution states that the flag may never be replaced.
