Tōhō
Tōhō Co., Ltd. (東宝株式会社, Tōhō Kabushiki-kaisha ?, TYO: 9602) is a Japanese film production company based in Chiyoda City, Tokyo, Japan. It is one of the companies of the Hankyu Hanshin Toho company. In the East, it is best known for the large number of kaiju (monster) and tokusatsu (special effects) films, the tokusatsu Chouseishin TV series, Akira Kurosawa's films, and anime films produced by the film studio Studio Ghibli. His greatest creation and most successful both nationally and internationally is Godzilla,[citation needed] known as The King of the Monsters. Toho has also participated in numerous anime films.
History
Toho was founded in 1932 by the privately owned Hankyu Railway as the Tokyo-Takarazuka Theater Company (東京宝塚劇場株式会社, Tōkyō Takarazuka Gekijō Kabushiki-kaisha?). The company produced many kabuki plays in the city of Tokyo.
In the 1950s, many of his films were exported to the United States, where they were quite successful. Toho opened the La Brea movie theater in Los Angeles in order to show his films and distribute them. The company was then known as the Toho Theatre during the 1960s and 1970s. Toho also opened movie theaters in San Francisco and New York. The latter in 1963.
The company split, forming a new company called Shintoho that only survived until 1961.
The Toho company has also contributed to the production of American films, such as Sam Raimi's film , A Simple Plan (1998).
The company's subsidiaries include Toho Pictures Incorporated, Toho International Company Limited, Toho E. B. Company Limited, Toho Music Corporation and Toho Costume Company Limited.
