The Tocumen International Airport (IATA: PTY, ICAO: MPTO) is located 24 kilometers from downtown Panama City, capital of the homonymous country.
It is one of the most important air terminals in Latin America by number of destinations. It operates flights to and from more than 70 cities in America, Asia and Europe, including the countries of Barbados, The Bahamas, Guyana and Belize, this being the only airport in Latin America with these destinations. It is also the main hub of operations for Copa Airlines. In 2006 an important expansion and renovation program was carried out with the aim of modernizing and improving its services. The second phase of expansion of the airport included the construction of the "north dock" which has allowed the airport to increase its capacity by 50%, now allowing it to handle up to 7 million passengers per year. Said expansion was delivered in April 2012 and is already in operation. Opened in September 2022
History

Airport documentation displays.
The first Tocumen International Airport was inaugurated on June 1, 1947, by President Enrique Adolfo Jiménez Brin, and began operations with the works half finished. The administration and terminal buildings were inaugurated seven years later.
The first airport, which is used today as a Cargo Terminal, was built in an area of 7.2 square kilometers and is located 41 meters above sea level.
Given Panama's history as a transit country favored by its geographic location, that terminal was too small for the demand for air operations. This motivated expansion plans for the terminal, which were never carried out. In its place another terminal was planned. Construction began in 1971. The Tocumen River was diverted from its original course for the construction of the new terminal.
The new terminal, also called Tocumen International Airport, was inaugurated on August 15, 1978. The inaugural flight was on September 5 of the same year.
The name of the airport was changed in 1981 to Omar Torrijos International Airport, in honor of the Panamanian leader. and was later reestablished after the abolition of the local military dictatorship by the US invasion of 1989.
Tocumen International Airport is among the few in the region with two runways, since the runway of the former terminal is permanently used by cargo planes and private flights or can be used as an alternative runway to the runway Main at times of high demand.
Tocumen's main runway is 3,050 meters long and is used mainly by commercial airlines.
Until May 31, 2003, the administration of the airport was under the Directorate of Civil Aviation (current Civil Aviation Authority). As of June 1, 2003, a new administrative organization was created by Law No. 23 of January 29, 2003, allowing the creation of a company called Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen S.A. which currently manages the airport. This law was part of a series of laws that reorganized the entire aviation sector in Panama.
Tocumen is an important complex and connection hub for flights going to and from the Caribbean, South America, North America and Central America. In addition, European cities such as Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid and Istanbul are served. Tocumen is the connection center for Panama's international airline, Copa Airlines, and its Colombian subsidiary Copa Airlines Colombia, formerly AeroRepública.
Expansion

Phase 1
Expansion of the passenger terminal
The main passenger terminal was expanded by 20,830 square meters and cost approximately US$21 million. It allowed the construction of new boarding gates to allow more flights to and from Panama, and also the expansion of commercial areas and internal circulation.
The administration acquired 22 new boarding bridges that replaced the previous 14. It also included 6 remote positions, which allowed Tocumen International Airport to have 28 boarding points. The new facilities were inaugurated in 2006.
Equipment
Another modernization project included new equipment to provide service and support to the airport's areas. These included the aforementioned new boarding bridges, as well as new elevators, a new baggage management system, new flight information systems, and the replacement of air conditioners.
Cargo terminal renovation
The remodeling of the main terminal of the old Tocumen International Airport, built in 1947 and currently used as a cargo terminal, was another project for the modernization of the airport. It included the redesign of the central building and the construction of new buildings for the cargo companies, among other improvements.
Phase 2
North Pier
The second phase of expansion of the Tocumen International Airport contemplated the construction of 12 new positions for aircraft at a cost of US$ 60 million.
The pier has 12 ports that simultaneously serve the same number of aircraft, which added to the existing 22 make a total of 34, plus six remote ones.
The new facilities include the north pier, aprons, taxiways, accesses, a new direct road to the cargo terminal and the airport administration building.
The new pier is connected to the existing passenger terminal at its northwestern end and has 10 moving sidewalks for passengers and 1,400 square meters of commercial areas.
The entry, exit and transit baggage management system was also expanded to better serve passengers. All these improvements also allowed the necessary adaptations to allow the landing of the largest plane in the world, the Airbus A380.
The capacity of the airport went from 5 million passengers a year to 13 million passengers.

Phase 3
South Terminal
The South Terminal was tendered in the first half of 2012 and the tender was won by the Odebrecht company. This is an investment of US$780 million, which includes 20 additional boarding gates and 8 remote positions. There will be 85,000 m² of construction and 8,000 m² of commercial area.
Includes the construction of a third runway, a new terminal, hundreds of parking lots, diversion of the Tocumen River, a new 4-lane direct access to the terminal.
Currently, the South Terminal was formally inaugurated in June 2022.
The construction of Terminal 2 includes a new control tower, this control tower will be built once the location of the third runway is defined.
However, according to the preliminary evaluation, in the new Terminal 2, it will be necessary to build a new control tower with a height of 70 meters, which according to the requirements of the International Civil Organization (ICAO), the entity that regulates this matter, will have the ability to effectively and safely control the existing landing strips and aircraft parking, up to the final positions.
Connection with the city
Tocumen International Airport connects with Panama City in two ways, the first is by free highway through Vía Domingo Díaz and the other that connects directly to the International Financial Center (downtown) is South Corridor quota.
Metrobus
Currently, the Tocumen International Airport, more specifically Terminal 1, is part of the Panama City Metrobús network through route E489.
Subway
Since April 25, 2019, Line 2 of the Panama Metro has been connected to the Tocúmen International Airport, this extension connects with the city center and with Line 1.
