Timbiriche (band)
Timbiriche (also known for a brief time as La Banda Timbiriche) was a Mexican pop music group. It started as a group of children in 1981 and managed to successfully evolve into adulthood. The band was considered one of the most important Latin pop groups of the 1980s and early 1990s.
It was the seedbed of numerous figures from the world of Spanish-American entertainment, including successful singers such as Paulina Rubio, Thalía or Edith Márquez as well as actors, composers and presenters.
The group's discography consists of twelve studio albums released between 1982 and 1993, as well as two compilation albums and three live albums. The group has met three times; the first occurred in 1998, the second in 2007, on the occasion of the celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the band and the third in 2017, on the occasion of the celebration of its thirty-fifth anniversary.
Their main rivals were Parchís from Spain, Menudo from Puerto Rico and Los Chamos from Venezuela.
At the same time as their musical career, the group also starred in a documentary directed by Carlos Marcovich entitled La Misma Piedra that followed step by step the group's adventures in preparing for tours, concerts and concerts. behind the scenes of its 25th anniversary. In 2007, the Televisa network also produced a reality show whose objective was to integrate a new lineup of the group, which was a resounding failure.
Name
Timbiriche (known in the United States as Dots and Boxes, and in other countries as juego de los cuadritos or points and boxes), is a board game with a mathematical structure that is played with pencil and paper. The objective of the game is to complete squares using points and thus claim as many of these as possible on paper. The idea of naming the musical group with this name comes as a response to the Spanish children's musical group Parchís, whose name is also inspired in a board game.
History
Background and training (1978 - 1981)
The idea of forming the musical group dates back to the founding of the children's area of the Artistic Education Center (CEA), founded in 1978 and which was part of the Mexican television network Televisa. The responsibility of recruiting a group of children, for the ranks of the school, was carried out by the Mexican actress and producer Martha Zavaleta. The children chosen to join the institution were Mariana Garza, Alix Bauer, Paulina Rubio and Diego Schoening. They were eventually joined by Benny Ibarra and Sasha Sokol. The group of children were trained in singing, dancing and acting at the institution. They eventually starred in the play The Wonder of Growing Up. It was thanks to this work that Televisa executives had the idea of forming a children's musical group with the six children.
At that time, the Spanish musical group Parchís was causing a sensation in Mexico and several Spanish-speaking countries. Televisa formed Timbiriche as a Mexican response to this group, and in 1981, the creative team in charge of launching this group to fame was made up of Víctor Hugo O'Farril, former partner, producer and creative of the television station and the Producer Luis de Llano Macedo. María Eugenia La Gorda Galindo, was selected as representative of the group.
Children's stage (1982-1984)
After a few months of preparation, Timbiriche made his official debut on April 30, 1982 on the Mexican television program Siempre en domingo, with the Spanish singer Miguel Bosé as his godfather. The group launches its first record production entitled Timbiriche, from which the singles Love for you, Today I have to tell you dad, And the party started and We're Friends.
Due to the success achieved, and in order to have a broader repertoire in their performances, in 1983 the group recorded a second album titled La Banda Timbiriche, from which the singles La banda timbiriche, Life is better singing, México and Mamá. The group is also chosen to interpret the musical theme of the children's soap opera Chispita. In that same year, the group participates in a television special where they share the stage with the Parchís group.
In that same year, the group released La Banda Timbiriche: En Concierto, an album that was released under the concept of being a live album, although in reality the sound effects of the public were added in the recording studio. The album includes covers of songs in English and famous musicals of the time such as Baile del Sapo (Time Warp from The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Clowns (cover of One Step, originally performed by Liza Minnelli and Goldie Hawn), Summer Nights (Summer Nights i>, from the musical Grease) and Mickey (Toni Basil's version). In this third album, the group already enjoyed great acceptance in Mexico, receiving several records gold for the high sales of their albums.
At the time of the group, the voices of the only two male members of the group were confused with those of the female members due to their young age. Due to this, the producers considered the idea of integrating a third male member to the group. The chosen one was Erick Rubín, who joined the band in December 1983. The band then released their fourth album, entitled Timbiriche Disco Ruido. The album represented the first great challenge for the band, since it was not known what the public's reaction would be before the new member, who had to go through many conflicts to adapt with his companions. However, the album was well received and contained hits such as Disco Ruido and Adiós a la Escuela.
Adolescent stage (1984-1988)
In 1984, Timbiriche, along with other child actors and singers (such as Thalía, Edith Márquez, Stephanie Salas, Eduardo Capetillo, Héctor Suárez Gomís, Lolita Cortes, Usi Velasco, Cecilia Tijerina, Angélica Ruvalcaba and Alejandro Ibarra among others), prepare to put on the play Grease (a hit 1972 Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey musical). The play was produced by actress and producer Julissa. From this staging, the album Vaselina con Timbiriche was released, which was yet another success for the group. The album launched the hit singles "Amor Primero", "Rayo Rebelde", "We Will Go Together" and "Freddy My Love".
In 1985, the group began an evolution. Its members had grown. They were no longer a children's group, and this situation gave rise to a new, fresher sound aimed at adolescent audiences. This change is evident in the album Timbiriche Rock Show, released in 1985.
But in the midst of the success obtained, Benny decided to leave the group in September of that same year, after the recording of the album and after having only participated in the promotion of the first two singles. His reason was that he wanted to prepare himself in music by enrolling in a school in the United States. Two months later, his replacement came in, Eduardo Capetillo, a promising young man who had already made himself known to the public with a starring role in the play Vaseline . Eduardo is the one who does the rest of the album promotion. Outstanding songs from this production include Teléfono; Together; I'm a Mess; I run, I fly, I accelerate and I plant myself.
In August 1986 Sasha, another founding member, announced her departure from the group in order to become independent and launch herself as a solo singer. A month later, her place is taken by Thalía, who had made herself known a few years earlier in a children's musical group called Din-Din , and who also acted as Sasha's substitute in the play. Vaseline.
In 1987, Timbiriche released the album Timbiriche VII. With this album, the group achieved greater success than the previous album, consolidating itself as one of the leading Spanish-speaking youth groups. From this production came the hits Don't be so cruel, Ash Kisses, Look at me (a matter of time), If it's not ahora, With Everyone But Me, Puzzle, Magical Love among others.
Timbiriche VII is considered one of the best-selling albums of music in Spanish, with sales of around one million units.
In that same year, Timbiriche interpreted the main theme of the telenovela Quinceañera, which was starring Thalía and the actress Adela Noriega.
In December of that same year, the group was invited to participate in the Christmas album Esta Navidad, alongside artists such as Yuri, Flans, Fandango, Manuel Mijares, Sasha Sökol and others. Timbiriche interprets the Christmas carol Ay del Chiquirritín!. In that same month, Mariana Garza, another of the founding members of the group, announced her departure from it to venture as a television actress. It is Mariana herself who chooses Edith Márquez to replace her, another young woman who was also part of the cast of Vaseline . In addition, Edith was already known for her participation in the television series Single Dad . Edith went through a difficult adaptation process when she joined the group.
Adult stage (1988 - 1991)
In 1988, Timbiriche began the production of his new record material. The producers entrust the project to Memo Méndez Guiú. Given Guiú's delay in sending the songs, Luis de Llano turns to Marco Flores. Finally, both Guiú and Flores present their proposals. Both were liked by the producers, which is why they then decided to combine both proposals and release a double album, something that at that time was very rare in the Spanish-American market. This is how the double album Timbiriche VIII and IX comes out. The album (which was also released separately), included the hit singles "Tú y Yo Somos Uno Mismo", "Ámame Hasta con Los Dientes", "Acelerar& & #34;You Drive Me Crazy", "Paranoia" and others. This stage is considered the zenith moment in the group's trajectory and takes another step in its evolution, positioning itself as a young adult group.
In November 1988, Alix, another of the founders, decided to leave the group to prepare for her solo career. After a series of auditions, in February 1989 her place was taken by Bibi Gaytán, who ended the double album tour alongside the rest of the members.
In February 1989, the group's first compilation album entitled Los Clásicos de Timbiriche was released. The album contains a compilation of the group's greatest hits, accompanied by the Mexico City Symphony Orchestra, and was recorded at the Sala Netzahualcóyotl in Mexico City. The album included an unpublished song, titled Por Ti, and included the participation of Benny, Sasha and Mariana, former members of the group. The production was recorded at the end of 1988, when Alix was still part of the group, but it was not released until February 1989. For this reason, Bibi was not included in the album.
In August 1989 Eduardo Capetillo and Thalía also decided to leave the group to prepare their career as soloists. After new auditions, their places are occupied by Claudio Bermúdez and Patty Tanús, respectively.
In 1990 Timbiriche X was released. This album is considered by many to be the last album that preserves the original style of the band which, at the time, only had three of the original members: Paulina, Diego and Erick, as well as Edith and Bibi, who were joined by Claudio and Patty. However, after only a few months, Patty is expelled from the group for having lied to the producers about her age and marital status, although some versions say that Paulina insisted on leaving because she had a higher voice than hers, being replaced by Silvia Campos, who although she did not record the album, did tour and promote it.
The record contained a strong influence from dance music, which at the time was hugely popular on dance floors around the world. The album included the hit singles "Princesa Tibetana", "Me Pongo Mal", "Historia de Amor", "Yo No Soy Una Más" and "Shake it off". With this album, Timbiriche receives its first Eres award for Best Pop Group.
In 1991, the group celebrated its 10th anniversary.
But at the end of the tour, Paulina, another of the founding members, leaves the group to open up a solo career. Just two weeks later, Erick, Edith and Bibi also announce their departure from the group to seek a career as soloists.
This situation leaves Diego as the only original member of the band, apart from Claudio and Silvia.
The last stage (1991 - 1994)
Although it was evident that, without most of its original members, the group was in decline, the producers decide to continue with the concept and bet on launching a new generation. Surprisingly, in the middle of production, Claudio is fired from the group.
By the end of 1991, the band recruited five new members: Lorena Shelley, Daniel Gaytán, Tannya Velasco, Kenya Hijuelos and Alexa Lozano. Together with Diego and Silvia they record the album Timbiriche 11. Kenya leaves the group before the official presentation of the album by decision of the creators of the group due to conflicts between the new members, being replaced by Jean Duverger. This second generation is officially presented during a broadcast of Siempre en domingo, in which all former members were invited to present the new members. This meeting was unique, since it had almost all the ex-members of the group. The only absentees were Diego, due to health problems, the recently released Kenya, Patty Tanus and Thalía, who was working in Spain.
Despite keeping the name and the general concept, there was a new musical style that mixed dance and tropical rhythms. The members wore uniforms reminiscent of the group's childhood stage, and performed choreographies that previous Timbiriche formations had never integrated into their presentations. Although the record was not as popular with first-generation fans, it began to appeal to younger generations, thanks to the hits Vanidosa, I Only Want You, Tierra Dorada, and Skin to Skin, receiving gold and platinum records for high sales. Thanks to this the group would manage to survive another year.
In 1993 they recorded Timbiriche XII, an album from which came what was considered the group's last hit: Muriendo Lento (version of Slowly original song by the former singer of the Swedish group ABBA, Anni-Frid Lyngstad). But at the beginning of 1994, Alexa decided to leave the group to get married, announcing it to the fans at a concert in Monterrey without having previously told her managers and colleagues. This was one of the reasons that gave rise to the final disintegration. The group never offered an official announcement about its disintegration.
The first meeting (1998 - 1999)
In 1998, within the framework of the Acapulco Festival '98, the six original members met again on stage in a historic night that broke audience records. After the success achieved, the album Los Clásicos de Timbiriche is reissued, now under the name Timbiriche Symphonic, which caused a stir among fans.
Plans for a formal reunion crystallized at the end of November 1998, when the group performed a concert at the National Auditorium in Mexico City. This concert also included Erick Rubín. By 1999, the group began a tour that took place throughout Mexico and part of Latin America. The reunion established in the National Auditorium of Mexico City, an audience record with more than 20 consecutive concerts. The tour would conclude with two massive concerts at the Foro Sol, also in the Mexican capital.
A double album titled Timbiriche, El concierto was released from said tour, which was recorded live at the National Auditorium on December 20, 1998. Said album also included three new songs: Is Awake, Cosmic Sum and The Force of Love.
25th Anniversary: The second reunion (2007 - 2008)
The original members of the group, with the exception of Paulina, meet again in 2007 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the band (April 30, 2007). The celebration is carried out through a concert tour and three albums: a studio one, titled Timbiriche 25, with new versions of 12 classic songs by the group but re-recorded with new musical and vocal arrangements, a live album with selections from the concert, entitled Somos Timbiriche 25 and finally the album Live Live (double CD + DVD) with the full version of the concert. This latest album also includes three unpublished songs: Vuelvo a empezar (first single adapted into Spanish from the original song by María Arredondo Brief and Beautiful), Atado a ti and Taming the air. These tracks are a gift and thanks to the fans who helped make Timbiriche's 25th anniversary a huge success.
Timbiriche broke its record at the National Auditorium with more than 20 consecutive presentations with massive sellouts and more than 30 concerts throughout the Mexican Republic. On Monday, May 5, 2008, Timbiriche closed the celebration of his 25th anniversary at the Foro Sol arena in Mexico. The group also had a special participation on May 17 in the concert of the Alas Foundation to help children in the Zócalo of the capital. In addition, the film director Carlos Marcovich who accompanied the group for a large part of the tour, announced the making of a documentary feature film on Timbiriche, which was called La misma piedra and was released on Friday, November 21, 2008 in all movie theaters.
The New Timbiriche Band (2009)
To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the group, the Televisa network decided to launch an open call for the formation of a new Timbiriche Band, this time made up of seven young people between the ages of 15 and 22. The process was carried out through a reality show called Buscando a Timbiriche: La Nueva Banda. 30 young people participated in it, and had the endorsement of some of the original creators of the concept and other personalities from the show (Luis de Llano, Memo Méndez Guiú, Marco Flavio Cruz, Marta Zavaleta, Amparo Rubín and Kiko Campos), as well as the six members of the Timbiriche 25 project (Alix, Benny, Diego, Erick, Mariana and Sasha) who participated as a jury evaluating the performance of the applicants. The band would be called La Nueva Banda Timbiriche, later, only as "La Nueva Banda".
Brissia Mayagoitia, Fernanda Arozqueta, Gabriela Sánchez, Taide Rodríguez, Alberto Dogre, Eduardo Brito and Yurem Rojas, were chosen to form this new group. But the concept was a complete failure. Only the single Tú, tú, tú achieved some degree of public acceptance. The group disbanded in April 2009.
The Musical (2010 - 2011)
In early 2010, producer Alejandro Gou obtained the rights from Televisa to adapt Timbiriche's songs as a musical work. Timbiriche, the musical premiered at the end of April 2010 at the Teatro Aldama in Mexico City. The star roles went to the actors Alan Estrada and Natalia Sosa. The work included 50 songs by the band. The story addresses the issue of the human crisis when they are 30 years old, with the perspectives of 7 young people, which has nothing to do with the lives of the original members of the band. After eight months on the billboard, Timbiriche El Musical ended its season with two performances at the Diana Theater and chose the capital of Jalisco to say goodbye permanently.
35th Anniversary: The third reunion (2017 - 2018)
On April 30, 2017, Timbiriche celebrates its 35th anniversary. After various rumors and requests from fans through social networks, on June 20, 2017, Benny Ibarra, Sasha Sokol, Mariana Garza, Alix Bauer, Diego Schoening and Erik Rubín called a press conference at the National Auditorium in Mexico City to announce the official return of the band. Timbiriche began a concert tour that began on September 13, 2017 at the National Auditorium in Mexico City. The tour lasted until 2018, touring various parts of Mexico and Latin America.
From said tour the double album + DVD Timbiriche Juntos was recorded, which included a new live version of the song Don Diablo next to his artistic godfather Miguel Bosé and the unpublished song El Ciclo.
