The Witcher (cartoon)
El Brujo is the name of a Chilean comic book series and the superheroic alter ego of its protagonist: Román Farías, a student of indefinite age at the University of Concepción (capital of the Eighth Region of Chile), which has the powers and abilities of the Chilote Witches (see Chiloé witches), a myth deeply rooted in the south of the country (see Chiloé mythology). In the ninth art world, the legend of sorcerers is famous for having been represented as the main villains of the “American Gothic” saga of the American series Swamp Thing, written by Alan Moore. El Brujo was created by the Chilean screenwriter Brian Wallis, and on the graphic side he is usually accompanied by the Chilean illustrator Mauricio Menares, appearing for the first time in the anthology magazine Caleuche Comic #1 (October 2005), Editorial Cíclope, and later in Héroes magazine, edited by CS Media. His tone is mainly farce / parody, and the one who usually gives the tone is the protagonist himself, due to his lazy, extroverted, arrogant personality and his constant habit of talking to the reader, as if he knew that he was in trouble. a comic. He is also characterized by his vast knowledge of popular culture, quoting or parodying comics, TV series and movies.
Along with other series such as Weirdos, Clergyman, Axis Z and Curso Alternativo, it has the particular honor of belonging to the first comic universe (in the style of DC Comics or Marvel), created in this country (CS Universe).
History
Shortly after his birth, little Román Farías is kidnapped by the ancient and evil order of Chilote sorcerers known as La Brujería, who are convinced that the baby is destined to become the witch The most powerful man ever known, the warlock who will bring darkness back to the world, so that order can finally reign. However, Román is rescued by El Curioso, a repentant sorcerer, Pezoa Véliz, an Invunche (beasts created by witchcraft from infants to be the guardians of their hideouts) that is considered a failed experiment (invunches are generally stupid and can barely speak, this is a genius), and Amelia, a flyer (women who can transform into birds through a ritual and serve as messengers for witches) who is beautiful and young, also a failed experiment, because she supposed to be creepy). The Curious One sacrifices himself, but allows the other two to escape with the boy, who leave him in an orphanage and try to ensure that he has a normal life, always secretly watching over him and ensuring that the Witchcraft does not find him.
Román grows up a normal young man, unaware of his past until he is found by a group of witches at his own university, who are determined to take him back to Witchcraft. At that moment, Pezoa Véliz bursts in and saves him. He decides, together with Amelia, to tell him his true story and reveal the purpose for which El Curioso saved him, to become a superhero (much to Pezoa Véliz's regret), who would defend people instead of harming them as the heroes do. sorcerers. Román, a product of popular culture (a fan of comics, TV, video games and music) delightedly accepts, but is captured by the order in his first adventure.
Román is forced by the leader of the Brujería, El Primero, to recite the spell that will bring darkness back to the world, but he makes a mistake, bringing in his place a giant Cuchivilú, a mythological chilote beast half pig half snake fish fanatic. While he goes to the coast, the beast is destroying the entire city. Roman reluctantly goes to stop him. Despite his reluctance, he manages to crash the beast into a refinery, blowing up the place, but stopping the threat. Román is found on television a few meters from the place, without his mask, so at that moment his identity is made public. The public and television immediately call him "The Number 1 Hero of the Nation", who think that Román is infallible, selfless and honest (being, of course, the opposite), a constant throughout the series.
Powers and Weapons
The Sorcerer rescues or converts elements of the myth into combat weapons for his fight against evil. In myth, witches are powerful sorcerers who through magic can do almost everything, from increasing their physical and mental abilities to transforming themselves into animals. Roman usually uses spells to increase his strength, stamina, and agility, since he is a poor melee fighter, and lacks discipline. As of now, the full amount of abilities he can have is unknown (but considering that he is potentially the most powerful warlock, his abilities may well be unlimited). He also has the unique ability to separate his head from his body (also an ability described in warlock mythos). When he does this, his ears change into wings, giving him the ability to fly.
His most distinctive accessory is his cape, a variant of the sorcerers' magical vest, the macuñ. This is a vest made of human skin (of a woman) that glows and allows you to fly when you shout "Arrealhué". Because the myth demands that the sorcerer must make his own vest (that means killing a victim and then transforming his skin into a macuñ), El Curioso left Román his as a gift. Román has also adopted the cry "¡Arrealhué!" like his battle cry.
Perhaps Roman's most curious ability is his tendency to break the fourth wall. Roman often addresses the readers and makes jokes about being a comic book character. While this mechanism is used primarily for comedic results, it gives him an unusual advantage over his rivals. Román knows very well the rules of a superhero comic and plays with them, he knows how a villain usually behaves, or how a crossover works (a term used for the meeting of characters from different series). Other characters known to do the same are Deadpool and She-Hulk, both from Marvel.
Characters
Román Farías/El Brujo: The protagonist of the series, his life changed the moment he put on his hero's uniform. He became an instant celebrity, and currently he is called from all over Chile to solve different cases. Román is lazy, exhibitionist and arrogant, and he takes any opportunity to be adored. He tends to act first and think later, and his decisions depend entirely on his state of mind. However, when he does apply himself he is quite astute and adept at coming up with last minute solutions. Román is an assumed geek, but due to his star status, he never lacks female company.
Pezoa Véliz: An invunche, a monstrous being created by witchcraft from infants who is subjected to a series of tests such as bending and twisting one leg and sticking it to the back. Misshapen and hairy, the invunches are the guardians of the caves where sorcerers gather. Unlike his peers, who can barely speak, Pezoa Véliz is highly intelligent, cultured, and educated (which is why he is considered a failed experiment in the order). He is the brains of the team, equally well-versed in wizardry and science, and is often the voice of reason. Despite this, he is just as strong and agile as a normal invunche (more or less like a gorilla). But he prefers to use violence as a last resort. Due to his deformity, Pezoa Véliz usually hides and gives instructions to Román from a distance. However, his monster status doesn't seem to affect him too much, and he does it mostly so he doesn't scare people.
Amelia: A flyer, messenger of the warlocks. These women can transform into birds if they perform a very painful ceremony that consists of vomiting their intestines. To return to their normal state they must ingest their intestines. Amelia is also a failed experiment, as she is young and beautiful, unlike the other flyers who are old and ugly. Amelia's mission is to constantly monitor Roman and make sure he doesn't sneak out to parties or avoid his work. She rivals him quite a bit, but deep down she esteems him. It is common for Román to make sexist comments to her and bother her for any little thing.
Alonso and Ricardo: Román's two best friends. After the cuchivilú destroyed the apartment in which they lived, Román took them to live with Pezoa Véliz and Amelia. They usually spend all day playing videos or at parties, Alonso is usually the most even-tempered and concerned, while Ricardo is as oblivious as Román.
El Curioso: The sorcerer in charge of training little Román to become the sorcerer supreme. He takes a liking to the boy and decides to sacrifice himself to allow him to escape. It is said that even when he is dead, he is neither in heaven nor in hell, but in a dimension where all ideas come from, and from there he continues to care for his ward.
