Plot
Jean La Bête (Oliver Reed) is a fur trapper who lives in a cabin far from civilization. He decides to have a wife and marries by proxy. When Eve (Rita Tushingham) arrives at the village where Jean is provisioned, he is not sure if she is the right woman, since he does not care that she cannot speak, but what she needs is someone to help her with the hard work. her. At first she is impressed by her rudeness, but once in the cabin, where they will spend the long winter hunting, they both begin to get used to each other.
One day out hunting, he is surprised by a puma, which makes him fall into a bear trap set by it. He finally manages to kill it and free himself from the trap but still has a long way to the cabin in which he is attacked by a pack of wolves and feral dogs. After getting rid of one of them, he is finally cornered, but thanks to Eve coming to his rescue, he saves her life. In the cabin she assists him, but after a short time he has to go for more food. Upon his return he has worsened and has to amputate his foot and part of his leg.
After the end of winter he feels better and walks on a wooden leg, but one day he exercises his right to marry, which she had always refused and the next morning Eve leaves him and flees down the river, but she falls into the water in the rapids and is rescued by some Indians who take her to the city. There she is given new clothes, but after being questioned she decides to leave there and return to Jean.
