The Planets (band)
Los Planetas is a Spanish indie rock band from the city of Granada, which has been active since 1993 and is still active today. Los Planetas pick up the influence of American guitar groups such as the Mercury Rev of the first period, or the British Spacemen 3 and Joy Division.
History
From Subterraneans to Medusa ep (1990-1993)
Juan Rodríguez (Jota) (Sociology student at the University of Granada) and Florent Muñoz (Law student) met in the early 90s, discovering their musical affinities. They decide to form the group Los Subterráneos (there are two versions for the origin of this name, on the one hand a tribute to the New York group The Velvet Underground, and on the other a reference to the homonymous book by Jack Kerouac) as vocals and guitar respectively, joining May Oliver on bass and, later, Paco Rodríguez on drums.
Los Subterráneos record several demos, highlighting the one produced in April 1992 that includes the songs My little sister, The center of the brain, La caja del diablo and Espiral, recorded with a new drummer, Carlos Salmerón.
In those years Christina Rosenvinge was accompanied by other Subterraneans for her first solo albums, with which J and company decided to change their name to the definitive Los Planetas, with which they will participate in various contests (Radio 3, Rockdelux...), and they will become regulars on radio programs dedicated to Spanish independent music, such as Discogrande and Diario Pop.
From that demo, best demo of the year 1992 for the listeners of the program Disco grande (Radio 3), My little sister (best national song of the year 1992 for Rockdelux and Disco Grande) and Pegado a ti are included on his first vinyl, the ep Medusa released by the independent label Elefant Records in 1993 and produced by his countrymen Antonio Arias and Miguel A. Rodríguez (Lizard Nick) (the drummer is once again Paco Rodríguez). In 1996 Elefant Records will release Medusa ep on CD.
Super 8 (1994)
The rise of Spanish indie music of the time invites several multinationals to sign groups from the scene, BMG will be the most active major record company in this regard, and its then A&R Javier Liñán (later at Warner Chapell, in the Virgin Chewaka sub-label and, more recently, at El Volcán Música, Los Planetas' current management agency) signs, among others, Los Planetas through the RCA sub-label.
Produced by Fino Oyonarte (bassist of the Madrid group Los Enemigos, and temporary founder and member of the band Clovis), Super 8 (RCA - BMG, June 13, 1994, vinyl, CD and cassette) includes some of the songs recorded on the first demos, with songs like De viaje (which will be covered by Astrud and Fangoria on a single CD published by Club FanFatal in 1998) ), the first single Brigitte, the tribute to Ian Curtis Disorder, the obscure (and already well-known) La caja del diablo or, among others, that hit that responds to the name of What can I do.
The design of the cover and booklet of the album is the responsibility of Javier Aramburu, who will be responsible for the art of the group's work, with the exception of the albums published between 2005 and 2018.
New sensations, discarded from Super 8, will be the main theme of an ep published in 1995 with a new song (La casa) and a different mix of Super 8 by Disorden (the ep will also be released on vinyl by Subterfuge Records adding an alternate mix of De Viaje i>).
The current CD edition of Super 8 adds the ep New Sensations.
Pop (1996)
For the recording of the second album, the group turns to producer Kurt Ralske (leader of the New York band Ultra Vivid Scene). Pop follows the path of Super 8, picking up three singles (Himno generacional#83, David y Claudia y Punk, released on CD and cassette by RCA, and on vinyl by Subterfuge) that confirm the group as one of the favorites for fans of national indie.
Paco Rodríguez leaves the group permanently and is replaced by Raúl Santos.
A Week in a Bus Engine (1998)
Recorded in New York, again produced by Kurt Ralske, A Week in a Bus Engine (RCA - BMG, April 13, 1998, CD and cassette) is chosen by Rockdelux magazine best album of the year, second best album of the 90s and 18th best national album of the century XX.
Brad Wood (a collaborator, among others, of Sunny Day Real Estate, Placebo or Liz Phair) was the first choice as producer of the album, but due to incompatibility of dates (Brad was hired to collaborate on the album Adore from The Smashing Pumpkins), Kurt Ralske (producer of Pop) was called upon again.
Throughout an hour, the album recounts a week in the life of the protagonist of the album, a week of heartbreak, parties, euphoria, anger, ups, downs, etc.
Once again, three singles were taken from the album (Second prize, Cumpleaños total and La playa), songs that stand out along with others such as Mountains of garbage, Toxicosmos or The European Cup.
In the formation of the group, May Oliver and Raúl Santos leave, being replaced respectively by the Scotsman Kieran Stephen (future member of Migala and, currently, of Fantasy Bar), after the occasional collaboration of Novi (Fernando Novi, bassist of the punk-rock group P.P.M. and road manager of Los Planetas) and Eric Jiménez from Granada (former KGB and also in Lagartija Nick). They also collaborate on the album Jesús Izquierdo (keyboards) and Banin Fraile (keyboards, guitars and effects), the latter will end up forming part of the group's stable formation.
Songs for a chemical orchestra. Singles and Eps 1993 - 1999 (1999)
Given the number of B-sides published in the group's singles, this double CD was released in May 1999, which includes all the singles mentioned so far, as well as the eps Medusa, New Sensations and the one recently published at the time ¡Dios existe! The messianic roll of The Planets.
This same year, Editorial Rockdelux publishes La verdadera historia, a biography of the group to date written by Jesús Llorente, music critic, writer and head of the Acuarela Discos record label.
Displacement Unit (2000)
Co-produced and recorded with Carlos Hernández in the studio that he designed and set up for them at the time in Granada (the Air Raid Shelter), Displacement Unit continues the path of A week in a bus engine.
You're going to see me on TV and A good day anticipated the release of the album in a single format, later being released as singles Saints that I paint you (which includes a new recording of the main theme with the voices of Antonio Arias (Lagartija Nick) and singer Pepe Fernández, and the incorporation of bassist Miguel López to the line-up) and Evasion Maneuver.
The first edition of the album was presented in a sixfold digipack and the second in conventional format (including the video clip for A good day).
Encounters with Entities (2002)
The fifth studio album, Encuentros con entidades (RCA - BMG, August 26, 2002), is once again co-produced with Carlos Hernández at El Refugio Antiaéreo; The incorporation of an American sound technician from outside the group and trusted by Carlos Hernández was expected for the mixes, but the ten days at The Playground Studios (Chicago, United States) with Keith Cleversley were hardly used, due to logistical problems and little conviction in the final result.
Finally it is mixed by Carlos Hernández himself in the Air Raid Shelter. This album includes the singles Circular Currents in Time, A Nightmare in the Amusement Park, The Spirit of Christmas and The Artist madridista.
All singles include a DVD with one or two video clips each, and a DVD is released with videos of all the songs on the album (both in stereophonic and 5.1 sound) and some of the promo clips from previous singles.
Entity Encounters was originally released in digipack, with the current issue appearing in conventional format.
On December 17, 2003, Cáñamo magazine published Los Planetas se dissolven, which includes four songs under the influence of different psychoactive substances, also produced, recorded and mixed by Carlos Hernández.
The Planets Against the Law of Gravity (2004)
Recorded and co-produced the same as the previous two feature films by Carlos Hernández (this will be his last work with the group from Granada due to serious differences with J), Los Planetas contra la ley de la gravidad (RCA - BMG, July 26, 2004) features songs such as El coup de grace, I never find out about anything (composed together with the hyperactive Guille Mostaza, from the group Ellos), or the singles Y además es imposible (a duet with Irantzu Valencia, female voice for a good part of La Buena Vida's career), number 1 on the Spanish singles sales list, and Don't burn.
For the first time, a Los Planetas album includes previously released songs (with the exception of advance singles): Experiments with soda, a new recording of one of the cuts from the ep Los Planetas dissolve (Cáñamo / RCA 2003), and I could go back, the version of Bambino that had already been included in the double compilation Bambino, for you and for us (RCA - BMG 2004).
The Box Singles 1993-2004. All their A sides / All their B sides (RCA - BMG, March 28, 2005) includes the 22 singles released by the group to date, presented individually on cardboard covers. It is Javier's latest collaboration Aramburu as cover designer for the group, up to the graphic material for the 20th anniversary of A week in the motor of a bus and that of Fuerza nueva.
The Legend of Space (2007)
The first non-compilation album by Los Planetas released in an odd year, La leyenda del espacio (RCA - Sony-BMG, April 10, 2007) paraphrases the title of the seminal La leyenda del time released in 1979 by Camarón de la Isla. Several songs on the album adapt flamenco styles to rock structures, including songs such as El canto del Bute, Si I was crazy about you, Meeting at the summit, I don't look over the fence anymore, There will have to be a way (sung by Enrique Morente) or the single Alegrías del incendio. The design of the album cover is the responsibility of Daniel D'Ors Vilardebó, a designer also from Granada.
About the incorporation of flamenco into the music of Los Planetas, Jota would say, years later, that "rock'n'roll is a flamenco style. And we do it without people noticing. The public believes that it is normal pop, but they are songs that have been in the culture of Granada for centuries. The only thing we vary is the harmony. The difference between flamenco and popular European music is in a chord".
In other statements, Jota indicates that "any artist who wants to stay active has to do new things, they can't always be doing the same thing. We try to find new ideas, things that are not easy to find. That is why we investigate flamenco, as well as because it is the culture of our land. With the Internet we were able to have access to old records that we couldn't find before, and also as a result of meeting Enrique Morente, who had a lot of information and was very generous in sharing it, we discovered that our job was also to support that culture, especially in a era of globalization in which dominant cultures try to eliminate peripheral cultures".
On April 3, 2008, he was recognized as the best national alternative rock album of 2007 at the Music Awards organized by the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Music.
On October 15, 2008, the tribute concert The Legend of Los Planetas was held in Hall 1 of the L'Auditori in Barcelona, on the 15th anniversary of the release of the first ep of the band. The groups that performed were Clovis, Pumuky, Manos de Topo, Fantasma #3, Tachenko, Nacho Vegas, Lori Meyers and Lagartija Nick.
Basic Principles of Astronomy (2009)
In July 2009, the group's first album was released under the October label (sub-label of Sony Music Entertainment): the compilation Basic Principles of Astronomy (October - Sony Music Entertainment, July 7, 2009) in double edition: CD, and pack made up of CD, DVD and comic in which cartoonist and illustrator Juanjo Sáez interprets 22 songs from Los Planetas. The CD contains 18 of those songs, including the previously unpublished Soy un pobre granaíno (Colombiana), while the DVD offers all the video clips of the group.
In some of the group's concerts held in 2009, bassist Miguel López is replaced by Half Foot Outside's bassist, Israel Medina.
An Egyptian Opera (2010)
In homage to singer Manolo Caracol, Los Planetas publishes on December 8, 2009 the ep Cuatro palos, with four songs, each one in a different flamenco style. With a cover designed, again, by Daniel D'Ors Vilardebó, the album serves as a preview for the group's eighth album.
The title of this eighth album is An Egyptian Opera. Arias, David Rodríguez and Eloy Heredia. The cover design is the responsibility of Max, the artist who directed the video clip that promoted the group's single Y besides it is impossible.
The single (published only in digital download) with La Bien Querida I don't know how dare you served to promote the album.
On April 28, 2011, the album received the award for the best national alternative rock album of 2010, at the Music Awards organized by the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Music.
Julián Méndez, former bassist and founding member of Lori Meyers, also bassist of the parallel group of Florent and Banin Los Invisibles, joins the starting lineup for the live show.
In March 2010 they played (along with Amaral, Tom Cary, Nudozurdo and The Unfinished Sympathy) at the South by Southwest festival (Austin, Texas, United States) within the "Sounds from Spain" promoted by ICEX.
Vinyl reissue of their first albums
In November 2010, Jota's label, El Ejército Rojo, announced the release, throughout 2011 and under license from Sony Music Entertainment Spain, of 500 copies on 180-gram vinyl of Super 8, Pop, A Week in a Bus Engine, Displacement Unit, Encounters with Entities and Planets against the law of gravity.
End of your contract with Sony
In the interviews carried out to promote the group's performances at the Primavera Club festival (December 7 and 8, 2012) the group says they have finished their contract with the record company Sony Music Entertainment. Jota declares that " Neither in 2012 nor in 2013 will a new album come out, nor do we plan to do it or anything. I do think that, in a next album, we would continue advancing in the idea of integrating our sound with flamenco as in An Egyptian opera (...). I always write songs; Before, I always recorded them immediately, but we have ended our contract with Sony, so we no longer work on request".
In 2022, when asked about self-management, Jota declared: "We continue to take care of the artistic part, basically. And the most industrial part is taken care of by our friends, with whom we share an ideology. Of course it's a small team, very small compared to when we were at Sony... But Sony takes a lot of money, all the profits. Now the distribution is somewhat fairer".
The Evangelists
In 2010, J was preparing a series of experiments with Enrique Morente and Juan Habichuela Nieto (Juan Habichuela's grandson), including a version of Un hombre solo by Décima Víctima, which was left half finished, but Enrique's death causes a swerve; Los Planetas are parked to vindicate the Morentina heritage through Los Evangelistas.
J, Eric, Florent and Antonio Arias (singer of Lagartija Nick) formed Los Evangelistas in 2011, a tribute group to Enrique Morente, whose debut, under the name Los Discípulos, was on June 18 in the fourth edition of La White Night of Flamenco held in Córdoba.
In 2012 they released on vinyl and CD Homage to Enrique Morente (El Ejército Rojo / October, 2012), a tribute album in which twelve compositions by Enrique Morente are reviewed from a very personal perspective. They have the support of their family, specifically the vocal collaboration of Soleá Morente and the pictorial (providing reproductions of some of her "matéricos", paintings that appear on the cover and in the booklet of the album) of Aurora Carbonell, daughter and partner respectively. They also have the collaboration of Carmen Linares (voice) and Martin "Youth" Glover (Killing Joke)". The songs included on the album are:
- Glory
- Decade
- Serrana de Pepe de la Matrona
- In a dream you came
- Amount of currents
- In front of my mother
- I'm a decadent poet
- The star
- Crazy.
- Lover
- Alegrías de Enrique
- Where you put the soul
In 2013 they released the EP Encuentro (El Volcán, 2013), five new compositions in which they have the collaboration of Soleá Morente as soloist on all the songs. The songs include:
- If you were my boyfriend
- Not just me.
- Malagueña de la Trini
- Sleeping
- The blood of my heart
- Not just me (Ambient Mix)
- Malagueña de la Trini (Ambient Mix)
- The blood of my heart (Ambient Mix)
In 2014 a seven-inch single was published with the title A rocker called Enrique Morente. Around Omega (1996). Includes Manhattan by Enrique Morente and Lagartija Nick, and Serrana by Pepe de la Matrona by Los Evangelistas.
Traveling around the Planets
On April 28, 2014, the publishing company Ondas del Espacio published, coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of the release of the album Super 8, De viaje por Los Planetas, a book with texts and illustrations about the band. Among the writers are Julio Ruiz, Jesús Llorente, Santi Carrillo, Guillermo Z. del Águila, Joaquín Pascual, Borja Prieto, Jesús Ordovás, Antonio Arias and Joan S. Luna; among the illustrators are Abel Cuevas, Moderna de Pueblo, Joaquín Reyes, Paula Bonet and, among others, Juan Berrio.
The book is accompanied by a CD with seventeen songs with versions of Medusa EP, Super 8 and New Sensations by Doble Platina, Grushenka, Manu Ferrón, El Faro, I hate Paris, Klaus & Kinski, Reina Republicana, Disco las Palmeras!, Muy Fellini, McEnroe, Pumuky, Estela, The Last Neighbor, Universal Circus, Los Bonsáis, Dënver and Cosmen Adelaida.
Double fatigues ep (2015)
On March 27, 2015, the El Segell del Primavera label reports the publication of the ep Dobles fatigues, "four new songs in less than 20 minutes that undoubtedly orbit around The Planets". This new work was available for pre-sale on Friday, April 10 through the Los Planetas website and went on sale on May 4, 2015.
Temporarily Autonomous Zone (2017)
At the end of 2016, January 27 was announced as the release date (published by El Ejército Rojo and El Volcán Música, due to a lack of understanding with El Segell del Primavera) of the single CD and 7-inch vinyl Espíritu olímpico, with the collaboration of La Bien Querida and preview of the album Temporarily Autonomous Zone that is published on March 24, 2017.
A second preview of the album is released on February 24, 2017: Islamabad, a song inspired by the song Ready to die by Yung Beef.
On March 21, 2017, a new advance is published on digital platforms, Because you tell me so.
The album's title is taken from the manifesto of Hakim Bey, a pseudonym for New York anarchist writer Peter Lamborn Wilson. According to Jota, leader of the group, "indie was the only culture of resistance in the nineties. It is a movement that is organized outside the circuit established by multinationals. Of course, it is like a temporarily autonomous zone: as soon as the power detects its existence, it absorbs it. It happened in England with the Rough Trade, Factory or Creation labels. The curious thing is that Spain has been the only country in the world in which indie has been consolidated. In the rest of the countries the alternative scene continues to be marginal, while here it has occupied the space of the mainstream".
In another interview, Jota declares that "those spaces must be built from the most important relationships, which are sentimental ones. From there you have to focus on how you want the world to be because capitalism is a system that is based on competition and does not allow love".
Tribute at the Contempopránea Festival
The 2017 edition of Festival Contempopránea was dedicated to Los Planetas: "In the year of their record return and on the occasion of their 30th single, the organization of Contempopránea has decided to pay tribute to one of the most important musical figures on the Spanish music scene. For this reason and as usual in the tributes of the Contempopránea festival, the bands that participate will have to review live during the course of their performance at the festival one of the songs of the honorees".

New Strength
Fuerza nueva is a collaborative project between Los Planetas and Niño de Elche. Following an interview by Javier Herrero: "Jota and Niño de Elche already knew each other and a regular collaborator of both, Juan Mario Vázquez, had the idea of uniting them to work on a single and experiment. This ended up generating material to think about "a project, not a band", with the incorporation of the artist Pedro G. Romero to reinforce the concept. "The name was the cherry on top of the whole process. Jota came up with the idea of calling it New Force, which contains many negative aspects but had a very powerful charge", explains Florent, before pointing out that, more than "punks with a pamphlet", what interests them it is "lyric, poetry and religion". 'It also had to do with New Order and Paco's (Niño de Elche) devotion to fascist rhetoric. I'm not much of a fan of the name, but it puts my finger on a place that burns everyone," says Romero, alluding to the far-right party of the same name founded by Blas Piñar".
Throughout 2019 the following singles are published:
- The champions. On January 3, 2019 the video clip of his first song edited by the Red Army, like the whole albumography of the group, is released. The champions, clip made by Andrés Duque. The simple cover was designed by Javier Aramburu. The press release states, among other things, that "the melody that has been popularized under that name comes from the cante of the auroros, groups of voices and instruments that accompanied the Rosary of the Aurora and that they have gone to the holidays of the winter cycle. (...) The first flamenco that recorded it was Manuel Torre (...) but it was undoubtedly the Niña de la Puebla that made it a milestone.
- Holy God. February 28, 2019 is published Holy God, review of the hymn of Andalusia, recorded in April 2018 in the Anti-aircraft Refugio, and mixed by Raúl Rëfree and mastered by Alexis Psaroudakis (Rosalía, Silvia Pérez Cruz, Rocío Márquez, Niño de Elche, etc). The video clip was made by Andrés Duque.
- The cross. On April 14, 2019, Friday of Dolores, comes to light The crossinspired by The arrow, poem by Antonio Machado popularized by Joan Manuel Serrat, and on the theme The Cross from Prince. The clip is in charge, again, of Andrés Duque.

The same item, but entitled One, big and free and sung by Jota and Niño de Elche, it is the face A of the first physical album of the group in simple format 7". Face B is The Gypsy Songadaptation of the hymn of the Gypsy people, the Gelem Gelem. The vinyl is published on September 6, 2019, with design by Javier Aramburu.
- Song for the workers of Seat'. On September 11, 2019, coinciding with the Diada de Cataluña, they publish in digital Song for the workers of Seatreinterpretation of the official anthem of Catalonia, The Segadors. At the end of the promotional video clip, directed by Andrés Duque, it is explained that this is a song "for the workers of SEAT imprisoned in Segovia, (...) a group of five proletarians that in a time was called the Revolutionary Workers' Assistance Army dedicated to expropriating companies and banks to help the strikers and unemployed". The graphic design is carried out by Javier Aramburu.
- The death boyfriend. On September 20, 2019, Spanish Legion Day, they publish their vision of The Death Bride, song played by the Legion on solemn occasions. In the letter a reference is made to Luis Aragonés as a guide to the adaptation made by Glutamato Ye-Yé de The Death Bride with the title I'm a Atleti partner.including in direct This was it! (Twins, 1987).
On October 12, 2019, Hispanic Day, the debut album of Fuerza nueva is released. Fuerza nueva is released on CD, vinyl and vinyl in a limited edition of 1,492 copies and numbered (folder with 180-gram vinyl, poster by Javier Aramburu and special booklet with texts by Pedro G. - Song for the workers of Seat
- The Death Bride

In 2020 two new singles are released:
- The Sun. On April 10, 2020, Good Friday, they publish on digital platforms The Sun, an Islamic prayer "based on the Andalusian nubs (...) that sound giving light on the sura 091 of the Qur'an, intituated The sun". Various theories consider that these nubas influenced the Royal March that is the Anthem of Spain. The reddish cover again is by Javier Aramburu.
- The rose. On June 21, 2020, coinciding with the Record Store Day, the 7-inch simple is edited The rose, with The sun in face B. The rose inspired by the Christmas carol and Marian hymn It is ein Ros entsprungen (A rose has sprouted). Once again, the design is by Javier Aramburu and the promotional texts are by Pedro G. Romero.
Live Single (2019)
On March 29 and June 14, 2019, a live version of Santos que yo te pinte, supposedly an advance of the first live album of his career.
Singles 2020-2021
On July 17, 2020, The new normality is published as a digital single, it will be the first of several singles that will be released, in principle, in that format:
- The new normal (2020). 17 July 2020 is published The new normal. From the promotional note of the simple, it follows that its title refers to the new normality derived from the pandemic caused by COVID-19: "The normal was the advertising bombing against the normal. You have to be all different, we told you. Exactly as different (...). Then, you know, the virus. Low profile. They at home and we to rest and enjoy a temporadita, which was already playing." Javier Aramburu is responsible for the cover, which shows the actor Malcolm McDowell in his role Alex DeLarge, protagonist of the cinematographic version that Stanley Kubrick shot from The Mechanical Orange. The song was chosen best national theme of the year by the listeners of the Discogrande program (Radio 3).
- Christmas booking (2020). On December 14, 2020 exclusively for the Rockdelux magazine website and December 25 of the same year for the general public is published Christmas booking, version of the homonymous villancico of the Argentine group He killed a Motorized Police. Javier Aramburu is also responsible for the simple cover.
- The negationist (2021). January 1, 2021 is published The negationist. Javier Aramburu's cover shows Spanish singer Miguel Bosé in a Disney environment. The promotional leaf of the simple read "(...) The Planets return with Negacionista popular music against propaganda, incompetence, conformism and laziness, to say no. Stupid, no. The wicked, no. Not the state. Not corporations. Uncertainty, no. To disinformation, no. The salesman, no. Anguish, no. To programmed dissent, no. Insisting with annoyance in its proposal of proportional retribution to the system, The Planets are offered to give to Caesar what is Caesar's, to God what is God's, to the community what is of the community and to capitalism, which is one and three, what is capitalism: the idea of a flat world, arrogance, a great deal of encouragement and lack of compassion. And even if he doesn't deserve it, a little bit of humor."
- The King of Spain (2021). On 19 February 2021 they publish The King of Spain. The edition coincides in time with the entry into prison of the rapper Pablo Hasél. In his promotional note, entitled "Why don't you shut up?", the phrase that King Juan Carlos said in 2007 to the then president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, speaks "of the High Patron, supreme command with the right of grace, so funny. The one who calls and dissolves, arbitrates and moderes. The one who proposes and appoints, expiates and confers. The one you credit and grant. The one that sanctions and promulgates. Which is right. The one who relieves, separates and puts an end. The one who declares war and makes peace. And love. The one who keeps and keeps. Of that of sticks, swords and, above all, of gold and cups. Of that, precisely from that, the Planets come to speak to us in their new single, The King of Spain". Javier Aramburu is responsible again for the cover that shows a crown from which women's legs come out.
- Antiplanetism (2021). Published on April 9, 2021, again with cover by Javier Aramburu. The promotional statement contains the phrases "the hypocrite would be to call or speak under the protection of political correction, flags, trends. A ruinous salary. The planets come back to speak clear and give to speak. After thinking, after listening. And we're gonna listen to them. Alerting against the lack of critical thinking and encouraging the recovery of pleasure as the end and foundation of life, the real one, which is more here from the screens. The rest is still your business."
- Alegrías de Graná (2021). It is edited on 2 June 2021 with lyric video directed by Antonio J. Mairena. The promotional note indicates that "The Planets neither invent nor perfect the joys of Grana, but they invent and perfect at the same time a stick, which is a changing and playful pop of Grana."
In March 2021, the publication throughout 2021 of a series of limited edition seven-inch vinyl singles, with covers by Javier Aramburu, is announced, without specifying how many there are or the number of copies available of each reference. The singles released, which are included on the album Las canciones del agua, are:
- The New Normality / The Negator (The Red Army, April 9, 2021).
- King of Spain / The zombie apocalypse (The Red Army, May 21, 2021). Includes the unpublished The zombie apocalypse, whose promotional note points out "the peculiar attributes of the zombies of cinema, television, comics, video games and music are inspired by the symptoms of rabies: drools, seizures, brain dysfunction or loss of muscle function. The rabies virus is a manipulative parasite that can control the mind of your host. Nature is full of manipulative parasites, something very common in the animal kingdom, to which humans belong."
- Antiplanetism / Joys of Grana (The Red Army, July 2, 2021).
The Songs of Water (2022)
On September 17, 2021 Jota announces in a concert of the Les Nits del Fòrum cycle (Barcelona) the title of the tenth album by Los Planetas: The songs of water (The Red Army, 2022), which is published on January 21, 2022. The album, which includes nine songs, six of them already published as singles between 2020 and 2021, was the best-selling in Spain in its first week of publication.
The songs of water, a title taken from one of the verses of the poem El manantial by Federico García Lorca written in 1919 and which the group plays to open the album, is divided into two "temporarily autonomous" blocks, one local and the other global: Granada and the world:
- The Granada part is reflected in the first four themes: the adaptation of the poem The spring by Federico García Lorca, the versions of He wants to come. (to be edited as simple) by Khaled and The morralla of Carlos Cano (the three Granada artists) and Alegrías de Graná (already published as simple).
- The second block collects five of the songs edited by the group during the COVID-19 pandemic: The new normal, The negationist, The King of Spain, The zombie apocalypse and Antiplanetism.
In the tour to present the album, Miguel López returns as the band's main bassist.
Solo Projects (2023)
At the end of 2022 and throughout 2023 the first solo albums by the founding members of the band were released: Jota edited Double pause (El Ejército Rojo, 2023), in which commissioned by the Spanish Film Library sets unpublished works by San Sebastian film director Iván Zulueta to music and on January 18, 2023 Florent launches the single Aquí paz y gloria, a preview of his debut album Florent y yo , published in 2023 by El Volcán Música and El Ejército Rojo.
About these solo projects, Jota says "(...)Los Planetas has been my artistic and life project practically since I started making music. I can almost say that the only thing I've done in life has been playing for Los Planetas. It has usually been the ideal vehicle of expression for me and I've never had that need to do something on the sidelines, but this was a more personal job, based on watching movies continuously and finding the meaning they have. Furthermore, it so happens that Florent (...) is also recording a solo album. (...) I found it interesting to do it without ties, without linking the musicians of Los Planetas, who, after all, are already very used to working with a very determined method".
