The King of Fighters (ザ・キング ・オブ・ファイターズ, Za Kingu Obu Faitāzu?), abbreviated KOF, and translated as The King of the wrestlers, is a saga of fighting video games initially for the Neo Geo system developed by the company SNK.

Overview of the series

The King of Fighters, from which the name of this series comes, actually originated from Fatal Fury, a classic fighting game from SNK that predates the KOF series. Fatal Fury 2 and Art of Fighting 2 also made use of this tournament prior to the release of KOF '94.

The first game in the series, The King Of Fighters, was The King Of Fighters '94. The game had originally been designed to be a dream combat of characters from several of the company's previous titles, particularly Fatal Fury (known in Japan as Garou Densetsu), Art of Fighting, Ikari Warriors, Psycho Soldier, etc. The game's success led SNK to release yearly editions of the game, naming them after the year they came out. In 2004, SNK abandoned the game's annual releases and began numbering them in a more traditional way; the first game to be released this way was The King of Fighters XI. In 2004, SNK produced the first 3D game in the series, KOF: Maximum Impact. The producer of the Maximum Impact series, Falcoon, established that these games belong to a different reality than the games in the original series (despite the fact that in North America, the second Maximum Impact i> was renamed as The King of Fighters 2006)

The KOF games had a number of villains as the final bosses for each edition. The first was Rugal Bernstein in KOF'94, who had a tendency to submerge those who had lost to him in liquid metal, turning them into trophies to commemorate his victories. During the Orochi Saga, Orochi was introduced as a demonic force from ancient times seeking revenge against those who had imprisoned him and was aided by four heralds. In later issues, a mysterious organization called NESTS captured and managed to clone Kyo Kusanagi in an attempt to use his power for world domination. The leader of NESTS, who called himself Igniz, hoped to gain enough power to become a god. Other villains in the series include Jivatma (KOF Maximum Impact), Shinobu Amou (kof ex and ex2) and Ash Crimson, in the 4th saga, the most recent to date, the final enemy is Saiki who happened to be Ash's ancestor, and wanted to free Orochi from the dimension where he was trapped to use his power for his own purposes. The King Of Fighters XV has been announced, and is now in development to be released on February 17, 2022.

Foreword

  • The King Of Fighters '94
It was the original version of KOF and the first title of the saga, but also the first Dream Match, since it brings together all the most famous characters from SNK games, then, more original characters. Players selected between teams of 3 fighters to 4 previously formed, which represented a different country.
The story was that a drug and arms dealer named Rugal Bernstein had sent a letter to all the fighters in the world in order to gather them to form a martial arts tournament. Being a powerful martial art fighter only wanted to defeat the best in the world and be recognized by all. That's why he took the idea of Geese Howard and renamed him The King of Fighters.
In this edition, the final character or Chief is Rugal Bernstein, organizer of the event. The King of Fighters '94 was relaunched in 2004 for Xbox and PlayStation 2, taking the title The King of Fighters '94: Re-Bout. It was released only in Japan and contains the following functions: 3D funds, high resolution graphics, online mode and computer editor.

Saga of Orochi

  • The King Of Fighters '95: Allows to edit the fighters teams for the first time, as well as propose a story for the game. This edition establishes the rivalry between characters, resulting in the most important one between Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami. After Rugal's defeat in KOF '94a new invitation is sent to the teams that participated in the last tournament. The organizer of the event is the character Omega Rugal, which is the improved two-tone version of Rugal, since his body was reconstructed after the last defeat. In this edition, a new team is presented, the Rival Team, made up of the characters Iori Yagami, Eiji Kisaragi and Billy Kane. Those who received that name, as each one entered the tournament in order of revenge, the 1.o, against Kyo Kusanagi, the second, against Ryo Sakazaki, and the third, against Terry Bogard.
On certain occasions, the scenarios where videogame fights develop are places that really exist. In KOF '95, there is a scenario that is in front of NeoGeo Land, place with many video games (Arcade) and used by SNK to test beta of their new games, even, is used in the movie Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture.
The game was released for Neo-Geo CD in 1995, PlayStation and Sega Saturn in 1996, Gameboy in 1997 and was launched as part of a compilation for PlayStation 2 of the Saga Orochi in 2006.
  • The King Of Fighters '96
It was the longest fighting game in the series KOF
An important change in this edition was that, according to the story behind each team, the characters changed equipment or have new members, some originals and some of other SNK games. Among the main changes are the departure of Heidern and the entry of Leone Heidern into the Ikari Warriors team, the change of Yuri Sakazaki to the Art of Fighting Team and the departure of Takuma from it, the entrance of Kasumi Todoh replacing Yuri in the now New Women Fighters Teamthe replacement of Eiji and Billy (who were brutally attacked by Iori) by Mature and Vice, and the emergence of a new team, the Boss Team, formed by the final heads of the KOF precursor SNK games: Geese Howard (of the Fatal Fury series), Wolfgang Krauser (of the Fatal Fury Real Bout series) and Mr. Big (of Art Of Fighting).
It was the first version to present a different graphic environment, with improved graphics and sounds regarding the previous versions, in addition to displaying on screen the number of successful hits consecutively (known as "combo"). Like the previous title, the The King Of Fighters '96 was also released at Nintendo Game Boy. The final head of this game is Leopold Goenitz, the first of the four Orochi heralds, which uses Rugal to celebrate the tournament.
  • The King Of Fighters '97
It is the main and final game of the argumental arch of Orochi.
Concluding with the encierro and sealed of Orochi in another dimension, by Kyo, Iori and Chizuru Kagura, the representatives of the three clans who locked him in the past (Kusanagi, Yasakani and Yata). The story of this version revolves around the team of "New Faces" composed by Chris, Shermie and Yashiro Nanakase, of which nothing is known until the end of the tournament, who end up being three of the four heavenly kings who arouse Orochi (in addition to Goenitz). This game is characterised by having two semi-final fights (one against Iori or Leone in its state of "Disturbing Blood" and another against the New Faces Team but possessed by the same state), before facing in the end Orochi, who has possessed Chris' body.
  • King Of Fighters: Kyo
RPG game with graphical novel style that features the Orochi saga for Playstation, exclusive of Japan.
  • The King of Fighters '98 (with the subtitle Dream Match Never Ends in Japan, or The Slugfest in the United States) is a SNK fighting game for the Neo Geo system. It's the fifth video game of the King of Fighters series. This presentation was announced by SNK as a "special edition" of the series, as it had the majority of the characters appearing in the previous games (from KOF '94 to '97), including those who had died in history.

Versions of KOF '98 were released on Neo Geo CD and PlayStation. There was also a Dreamcast version called The King of Fighters: Dream Match 1999, with many of the stages re-done in 3D. A decade later a remake came out for PlayStation 2 as The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match, which expands the number of characters.

Lacking a story, SNK took the opportunity to include Rugal (who had died in KOF '95), as well as various alternate versions of other characters. KOF '98 is commonly considered by many publications as the best KOF due to its graphics and accessible gameplay.

All the regular characters from KOF '97 return, along with several characters from previous titles such as Vice and Mature (Iori's partners in KOF '96), the jock team (Heavy D!, Lucky Glauber, and Brian Battler) of KOF '94, the team of veterans made up of Heidern, Takuma Sakazaki, and Saisyu Kusanagi, characters who stopped appearing in KOF '95. Rugal Bernstein from KOF '94 also returns as a solo character, with his alter ego Omega Rugal (his robotic version from KOF '95) serving as the final boss. Shingo Yabuki (from KOF '97) still has no team, and appears as a sub-boss in arcade mode.

NESTS Saga

  • The King Of Fighters '99: Millenium Battle change the playability to 4 Vs. 4, being the first of the 3, being able to choose a fourth fighter who is only able to make a special move by pressing a combination of buttons (Striker). In this delivery, Kyo or Iori are only eligible by a respective key for each one, they do not appear visible in the normal version of the game. The new protagonist of the saga is K', a normal boy with whom the organization N.E.S.T.S. did experiments of translocation of genes to give him the powers of Kyo, who joins the Japanese team (Benimaru Nikaido and Shingo Yabuki, the latter replacing Gordo Daimon) and his friend and bodyguard, the Maximum android to win the tournament. The head of this version is Krizalid, who is supposed to be the man K's clone. At the end of the game the sister of K', Muchiko (his name in the game is Whip) and new companion of Leone, Ralf Jones and Clark Still, reveals to Krizalid that he is not the original, but a clone of K'. Near the end Iori Yagami or Kyo Kusanagi appear and it is obligatory to face them but not beat them as for some reason you win or lose you will get the same end of the game (certain scenes depend if you fought with Kyo or Iori). A whole system of the N.E.S.T.S. company is revealed to clone Kyo and conquer the world. In this game there are 2 clones of Kyo (Kyo-1, who has the playability of Kyo in KOF '94 and Kyo-2, who has the KOF '96), which are defeated by the true Kyo. In addition to K', Maxima, Whip and Krizalid, other debutant characters are Li Xiang Fei, a Chinese fighter who joins the New Women's Team led by King (together with Kasumi and Blue Mary), Bao, a boy with an impressive psychic power and tied to Sie Kensou, Jhun Hoon, Kim Kap Hwan's training partner.
  • The King of Fighters 2000
Stop. KOF 2000K' and Maximum they joined Vanessa and Ramon (new people and undercover agents) to win the tournament. However, N.E.S.T.S would take K's departure as a betrayal and develop a new fighter under the concept "Anti-K": Kula Diamond, a girl with translocated genes, which instead of being a pyromat like K' and Kyo's clones, is cryomant (possessessing ice-generating powers), antagonizing. At the same time, the organization builds the "Zero Canyon" to destroy the city of SouthTown. Kula recognizes the danger and rebels against N.E.S.T.S, destroying the cannon. Unlike other games of the saga, the semi-final (where Kula is the rival) is given a couple of rounds before the end. While the head of the game is Zero, a powerful N.E.S.T.S. soldier, who reveals that a clone of his was infiltrated into the Ikari Warriors barracks so they could not stop the Zero Canyon.
The particularity of this game also, is that the member assigned as Striker can be replaced by an exclusive striker, which can be a character who has participated in other games of the saga (such as the New Faces, Xiang Fei, Daimon, etc.), in other games of SNK (such as Nakoru of Samurai Shodown, Kaede of The Last Blade, Athena of the game
In this game they also debut Seth (a well-known private detective of Benimaru), Lin (a ninja of a mysterious clan that seeks the power of the Dragon that possesses Kensou, but in this case Lin seeks a traitor to his clan, helped by Seth) and Hinako Shijou (a young Sumo fighter who replaces Xiang Fei in the Women's Team)
  • The King of Fighters 2001 it was the last of the 3 to have battles 4 Vs. 4, but with changes you can choose from 0 (the four team members can fight freely) to 3 strikers (where the active fighter will have 5 levels of power bar). It is the final game of the N.E.S.T.S. saga and one of the largest number of fighters, having 42 active characters.
In this delivery, Kyo and Iori are retraining teams, in this case Kyo returning to the Japan Team (With Benimaru, Shingo and Daimon), while Iori is forced to have agents Seth, Vanessa and Ramon as partners. K' and Máxima for their part, join Whip (at the suggestion of it to Heidern) and Lin (recommended by Seth). Kula is forced by N.E.S.T.S after his disobedience, to join the new and final Anti-K', K9999 (a clone with the appearance of Tetsuo, co-protagonist of the Akira film) and agents Foxy and Angel. Also debuts May Lee, a Korean idol and student of Kim Kap Hwan, as a member of the Korea Team, replacing an injured Jhun. The semifinal fighter is the Zero Original, being the Zero of KOF 2000 and the agent infiltrated into the Ikari Warriors barracks his clones. Zero has as strikers a clone of Krizalid, Ron (the traitor of the Lin clan) and a black lion. While the final head is the leader of N.E.S.T.S, Igniz, a demented and powerful subject who convenes the KOF 99, 2000 and 2001 tournaments to gather power and self-proclaim a god. But he is defeated in a joint attack by K', Kyo, Iori, Athena, Terry and Ryo, making the ship where the finals are performed fall to Earth, all being saved by Kula (except the Igniz itself)

Ash's Saga

  • The King of Fighters 2003
Unlike previous games, KOF 2003 uses the 3 vs 3 combat system with relays (mechanical mechanism that Capcom implemented in its crossover saga with Marvel Comics)
In this game is presented the New Hero Team, made up of Ash Crimson, a mysterious young man who can control green flames, Duo Lon (the son of Ron, the traitor of the Clan Madeku, whom he seeks to exterminate) and Shen Woo (a street boxer willing to all for a good fight).
In this delivery, Kyo and Iori do not participate as members of a trained team, if not they can interfere with any other team, however, if they form together with Chizuru again the Team of the Sacred Treasures, we discover the background of this story: Ash actually enters the tournament to steal the powers of the members of this team, getting to steal at the end of the game the power of the Yata Mirror, owned by Chiejo.
The organizers of the tournament are the sons of Rugal: Adelheid (named Adel) and Rose Bernstein, together with Chizuru. That's why they're both game bosses (Chizuru fighting alongside a projection of her deceased twin sister Maki). The third chief is Kusanagi, one of Kyo's clones that survived the extermination of N.E.S.T.S.
While the boss is Mukai, one of the heralds of the new order that tried to awaken Orochi again.
Other new characters are: Tizoc The Griffon (A Mexican masked fighter invited by Terry to replace his brother Andy), Gato Futaba (an obsessed with the fights that is hired by Billy Kane and Ryuji Yamazaki to cover the absence of Blue Mary) and Malin (a girl with great agility and handling of cutting weapons, which joins Athena Askoager). Malin is a completely new character, while Tizoc and Gato come from the latest release of the Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu series: Mark of the Wolves.
This game was launched for Playstation 2 and Xbox.
  • The King of Fighters XI
It is the first game of the saga not to leave in the year following the previous game, so from this, the games will be named according to their order, so KOF XI gets the name for being the eleventh official franchise game. It was made on the Atomiswave graphic engine of the Sammy company, being the last to use the sprites/frames based on the Neo-Geo graphic engine.
Using the same mechanics of KOF 2003, XI was the subject of several criticisms, the disorganization of traditional teams and the absence of iconic characters from the saga, such as Mai Shiranui, Robert Garcia, Chang Koe Han and Leone Heidern. Later, Mai and Robert were included in the version for Playstation 2.
Ash Crimson was questioned by fellow Shen and Duo Lon for attacking Chizuru Kagura. Ash managed to convince Shen to stay next to him, letting Duo Lon go. Ash then replaces Duo with Oswald, a strange guy looking for a drug called "Dragon Pills." Duo instead joins Benimaru, with no equipment being replaced in the Japan Team, and Elisabeth Blanctorche, the heiress of his family empire and a childhood friend of Ash. Kyo and Iori, in an irony of destiny, decide to form an official team to compete, with Shingo Yabuki as a third member, with the aim of facing Ash for the attack on Chizuru. Other debutant characters are: Momoko (a girl with great Capoeira knowledge and psychic power that recruits Chin to team up with Athena and Kensou), Bonne Jennet (a booby-trap who convinces Gato Futaba and Tizoc to make the Mark of the Wolves Team) and Duck King (who is recruited by Terry and Kim to form the new Fatal Fury).
This game featured the largest number of sub-heads: Adelheid Bernstein, Gai Tendo and Silber (Protagonist and Final Chief, respectively, of the Buriki One game), Sho Hayate and Jazu (Protagonist of the Savage Reign-Kizuna Encounter saga, known in Japan with Fuun, and Head of the second delivery of this saga, respectively) and Shion (Asssist of Magaki). Adel is an intermediate subhead and Shion the pre-end subhead, while the guest characters are secret subheads that will appear during the course of the game.
While the final boss is Magaki, another of the new heralds looking for Orochi's awakening. After the defeat of Shion, Magaki sends him to another dimension, being that after losing the end of the tournament, Shion takes revenge and kills him.
If the winning team is the Kyo-Iori-Shingo team, or Elisabeth-Benimaru-Duo, they have as the final scene Ash stealing the power of the Magatama to Iori, and warning Elisabeth that the next obviously is Kyo. In the later release for PlayStation 2, additional characters such as Mai, Robert, Kyo EX (playable and dressed in the N.E.S.T.S. saga), Mr. Big, Geese Howard, Tung Fu Rue (Master of the adoptive father of Terry and Andy) and Hotaru Futaba (Little Brother of Cat) were included.
  • The King of Fighters XIII
Launched for Arcade on July 14, 2010, while in its launch for PlayStation 3 and X-Box 360 was announced for September 2011, it was highlighted by replacing the old sprites characteristic of the Neo-Geo engine with an HD rendering for the Taito Type X2 plate, successfully tested in KOF XII (Dream Match).
The story focuses on the climax of the Ash saga, where the new Orochi heralds (among which are Mukai and Botan), self-denominated "the distant Earth", seek the ultimate energy to return it to the world. Many of the iconic characters of the saga return, and with them, the traditional teams. The only one to participate without a team is Ash, while the debutants are Hwa Jai (a Muay thai fighter who seeks along with Raiden to cleanse his reputation by being Kim's spiritual apprentices) and Saiki, the game's chief and leader of The Far Earth, at the same time Orochi's herald and Ash's ancestor (then his physical similarity).
The mechanics of the game returns to the origins, where the teams of three fighters fight each other for assaults, reaching the semifinal, where Saiki is the opponent, after killing and assimilating Mukai (KOF chief 2003). Ash murders Saiki (who had been given the stolen powers of Iori and Chizuru) to avoid the awakening of Orochi. However, Saiki's soul possesses Ash's body, transforming it into Dark Ash, the true final chief.
By defeating Dark Ash, the true Ash manages to dominate his body again. Saiki asks him to return to the past to forge a new plan, but Ash refuses, staying in the present by enclosing Saiki, causing a temporary paradox, since by not being Saiki in the past, Ash would not be born, erasing his existence (and that of Saiki) in the present. After this, Iori and Chizuru regain their powers. Time later an expansion of the game called KOF XIII Climax was launched, where the characters were included Billy Kane, Normal Saiki, Iori classic (with Flamas), Kyo EX (with the playability and costume of the N.E.S.T.S Saga) and Mr. Original Karate (Takuma).

Spatiotemporal chronology

  • The King of Fighters XIV
Launched for PlayStation 4 in August 2016, a few more months for Taito Type X3 and in June 2017 for PC. This game will contain 16 teams of 3 characters of a total of 54 characters (counting with the final bosses and the downloadable content).
This delivery is back to 3D (like the Maximum Impact series), but with 2.5D playability (in Street Fighter IV style), returning to the bars used in KOF 2002 Unlimited Match, which was removed from the Hyper Drive bar due to memory limitations. The game occurs time after the time-space disturbance caused by Ash Crimson, when the tournament rights are purchased by a Russian billionaire named Antonov (subject of the game). However, after the end, a monster breaks the tournament: Verse, who was created by the anomaly that caused Ash, also causing the arrival of fighters from other temporary spaces. With the exception of Takuma (normal and Mr. Karate), Raiden and Hwa Jai, and the protagonists of the previous saga (Ash, Saiki, Shen, Duo Lon and Elisabeth), the roster of XIII becomes present, with costume changes mostly. And with several returns, like that of Geese Howard, Chang KoeHan, Choi Bounge, Ramon and Angel In addition they debut four new teams: the South American Team, presenting Nelson (a Brazilian boxer who has a bionic arm), Bandeiras Hattori (A Brazilian chunin who is supposed to be descending from the Ninja master Hanzo Hattori) and Zarina (a young Colombian lover of nature); Also debut Xanadu (a man with mystical delusions that Chang and Choi know in prison), Gang Il and Luong (the probable master of Kim and one of his apprentices), Alice (a fan of Terry Bogard, which on the recommendation of him joins the Women Team of Mai and King), Hein (the new star guard of a resurrected Geese Howard, refined and with little intention of King In 2017 it was announced the output of the download characters (DLC), which are: Heidern, Whip, Vanessa, Ryuji Yamazaki, Rock Howard, Oswald and a new character, Najd.
