The Greater Wyoming
José Miguel Monzón Navarro (Madrid, May 15, 1955), better known by his stage name El Gran Wyoming or simply Wyoming, is a Spanish comedian, television presenter, actor, musician, doctor, writer and columnist. He currently presents the television program El intermedio , which is broadcast by La Sexta.
Biography
He was born in Madrid, in the Prosperidad neighborhood, into a family of pharmacists of Cuenca origin. Graduated in Medicine, he abandoned his job as a doctor, which he practiced when he was serving in the military, in the town of Buitrago del Lozoya, to dedicate himself to show business.
At the beginning of his musical career he played with his group Paracelso and later on he represented comic-musical shows with the pianist Ángel Muñoz Alonso, nicknamed Reverend Master, touring all the hovels of Spain during the years of the Madrid movement. He also declared himself a fan and admirer of the English comedian Benny Hill, a taste he shares with his friends and colleagues Santiago Segura and Álex de la Iglesia. It is said that from a talk he began talking about Benny, the idea for the script for the movie Dead of Laughter arose. [ citation needed ] sup>
He has been the presenter of several television programs, such as Silencio se juega (La 2, 1984), by José María Fraguas, La noche se mueve (Telemadrid, 1992- 1993) and The worst program of the week (La 2, 1993), directed by Fernando Trueba. Televisión Española (TVE) suspended the broadcast of The worst program of the week the same day that the writer Quim Monzó was going to be interviewed, fearing that he would make offensive jokes about the royal family. The program was broadcast live and therefore could not be done. In 1996 Wyoming returned to television, but this time on the private channel Telecinco, presenting with Juanjo de la Iglesia and Javier Martín (and with reporters such as Pablo Carbonell, Sergio Pazos, Arturo Valls, Tonino, Mario Caballero or Gonzo) the Spanish version of the Argentine program Caiga quien caya. Whoever falls falls was the satire of the political class in general and the government of José María Aznar in particular, to which must be added the reports on the world of sport or culture, and sections of criticism and social denunciation.
Meanwhile, in 1999 he created the record label 18 Chulos together with Santiago Segura, Pablo Carbonell, Javier Krahe, Pepín Tre and Faemino. In the early 2000s, the label will diversify into a record label and event agency.
Of a progressive tendency, El Gran Wyoming was one of the promoters of demonstrations against the policies of the Popular Party during his second legislature and directed the segment Second Deaths in the collective film denouncing There Is a Reason (2004).
In 2004, he premiered a new program on Spanish Television, La azotea de Wyoming, which ended up being a huge flop. After several schedule changes and screen shares that reached 6%, TVE decided to remove La azotea de Wyoming from its schedule.
In May 2007, he premiered his first documentary work on La Sexta, El Severo me duele, a report denouncing alleged medical irregularities at the Severo Ochoa Hospital in Leganés.
Since 2006, he has presented the night program El intermedio on La Sexta, in which he makes satirical comments on daily news. In addition to acting on television, she wrote a column in the newspaper Público of the Mediapro group, called Asuntos & amp; Issues, in which she criticized different issues, both political and current affairs. She stopped collaborating for Público due to the termination of the medium for financial reasons. [ citation needed ] sup>
In 2013 he wrote We are not crazy, a book in which he reviews the history of Spain from the last century up to the present arguing, among other issues, that what is happening now, the crisis situation, is due to the events of the past. It exceeded 100,000 copies sold and more than eight editions. The author himself declared that the intention of the book was to tell "the origin of why we are trapped in this terrible political and ideological moment", making "a critical mockery of dialogues and real situations".
Disputes
In January 2009, Xavier Horcajo in the Intereconomía program Más se perdido en Cuba commented on Beatriz Montañez, co-host of El intermedio, that more than journalism what makes "has to do with the oldest trades in the world", as a result of a sketch of hers in which she played the role of a porn actress. In response to this statement, the team of El intermedio recorded a video in which Wyoming allegedly reprimanded a scholarship recipient for interrupting a rehearsal for his program and emailed it to Intereconomía, which gave it credibility and aired it as an exclusive. Subsequently, a video of this broadcast was posted on YouTube and viewed some 250,000 times over a weekend, drawing widespread criticism of Wyoming for its degrading treatment of the intern. On February 2, Wyoming revealed that the video had only been a montage in order to ridicule Intereconomía and denounce its lack of informative rigor for having broadcast the video without first verifying its veracity. Xavier Horcajo later argued in his defense that "the images that were sent to us accounted for a crime, and when you have a crime on your hands you don't stop to think if it is a montage" and described the montage as a "hoax".
In December 2009, after a video montage broadcast on The Intermission, in which the journalist Hermann Tertsch was in favor of fighting the al Qaeda terrorists with all means and force ("to save the life of a compatriot justifies everything"), El Gran Wyoming was sued by Tertsch. A few days after the broadcast of this video, Hermann Tertsch suffered an assault in a bar in Madrid. According to his own version, the perpetrator was an unknown person who kicked him and broke several ribs. Several media outlets related the attack to Wyoming satires. In the end, the case was clarified and on January 7, 2010 The alleged perpetrator of the attack on Hermann Tertsch was arrested, so the hypothesis of a political motive for the attack was ruled out.
