The chojin
Domingo Antonio Edjang Moreno (Torrejón de Ardoz, Madrid, April 28, 1977), better known by his stage name El Chojin, is a Spanish rapper and composer..
His stage name is the name of the god of the Japanese animated film series Urotsukidōji, Chōjin (choyín). In 2007 he broke the record for syllables sung in one minute with a total of 921 syllables, snatching the Guinness record from Rebel.
Biography
He was born to an Equatoguinean father and a mother from Extremadura in the town of Torrejón de Ardoz, near Madrid. The Chojin stands out for the deep social criticism that he carries out on his themes. He belongs to the crew & # 34; W.F.N. & # 34;, which means Wild For da Night (Wild during the night), name taken from the homonymous song by Busta Rhymes and of which he is also belonging to Meko.
Among his works we find the 995 project (the four works that the group did) in collaboration with other Spanish rappers and solo My turn, The level goes up, Sólo para adultos , his album with the most media coverage, especially for songs like "Lola" (which brought him fame outside of the rap scene); When There Are Obstacles... and ...Never Try To Deny It (the initials of these last two albums form the A.K.A. of this MC). After these 7 albums, the Chojin returned to publish a demo, titled Rap for pleasure, for free distribution via the Internet.
In early 2005 he released his eighth LP in a contest organized by the artist himself on his website.
In 2007 he published, solo, Striptease (LP), an album in which he bares his soul, and his concerns, playing with irony with girls and with the collaboration of new and veteran producers, guitarists, harmonicas, pianos and a gospel choir.
In the same year, Chojín wrote and starred in “El Alma de Alexander Oboe”, a theatrical show for integration produced by Casa de los Pueblo and presented at the Madrid Sur Festival. Likewise, she carried out a tour of different theaters in Spain.
On December 23, 2008, he won the Guinness World Records award for "Fastest MC", managing to rap 921 syllables in one minute with the song "Vo-ca-li-za".
The following year he published again a demo for free distribution entitled Aún Rap Por Placer, made up of six tracks and a collaboration with Duo Kie from Madrid.
In March 2009 he published Things that happen, that don't happen and that should happen, an album made up of 30 songs, with very varied collaborations, such as Locus (Duo Kie), Maika Sitté, the Red House Blues band, the comedian El Gran Wyoming, the singer-songwriter Luis Eduardo Aute, Donpa, La Orquesta de Cámara Clave 1 and Astrid Jones, in addition to many others in the productions.
From January 28 to June 24, 2010, El Chojin appeared every Thursday doing a rap summary of the week's news, on "Las noticias de la tarde" from The 2.
On May 11, 2010, he published with Francisco Reyes Rap. 25 years of rhymes, book on the history of rap in Spain.
In January 2011, El Chojin published his book of reflections "Laugh when you can, cry when you need it" with the publishing house Espasa. In this book, Torrejón's MC tells his vision of life, reflections and anecdotes.
On March 15, 2011, he released his eleventh album, entitled El Ataque De Los Que Observaban. In fifteen songs, El Chojin deals with topics as varied as bullying ("The sad story of the neighbor upstairs"), relationships ("Different languages") and even criticism ("They told me"). On the topic "Rap vs racism" Some of the most important artists of the genre in Spain collaborate: Lírico (Violadores del Verso), Santo (Falsalarma), El Langui (La Excepción), Kase O (Violadores del Verso), Nach, Locus (Duo Kie), Ose (995), Nerviozzo (Duo Kie), Sho Hai (Violadores del Verso), Zatu (SFDK), Gitano Antón (The Exception), Titó (Falsalarma) and Xhelazz.
Musical style
El Chojin stands out from other MCs for his determined -adjective- commitment to social commitment, it is striking -adjective- not to find bad words in his texts, but as he himself says "...I write how I speak, not using those words is not planned, it's just honest". He tries to show how it is through rap, and leads by example of what he tells in his songs-subjective-. In his texts one can find frequent allusions to non-violence, against drug use -including alcohol- and against racism. His theme & # 34; Lola & # 34; -2001-, which promotes the use of condoms, being used in an awareness campaign on the use of contraceptives by the Barcelona City Council. Amnesty International also chose one of his songs (together with Meko and Kraze Negroze) for the "Put yourself in my skin" -2003-, a new proof that El Chojin seeks with rap to raise awareness in society, in this case about the phenomenon of immigration. Also, with the release of the album 8jin, Amnesty International chose the theme "The end of the fairy tale"-2005- for a national campaign against gender violence. Likewise, El Chojin collaborates with the NGO Entreculturas, giving a completely improvised concert in Valencia on a stage that Entreculturas itself had set up in the center of the city in order to demonstrate; The Chojin walked calmly, asked what those hundreds of young people were doing there and decided to join the group.
One of the main themes that El Chojin addresses in his lyrics and in most of his LPs is discrimination, mistreatment and injustice in general. The fight against gender violence and awareness of the phenomenon of immigration. He was born and raised in Spain, but he knows this problem perfectly due to his African roots and has raised this cause on many occasions. In fact, as he reflects on the songs & # 34; I am not one of those & # 34;, & # 34; Mami el negro está rabioso & # 34; or & # 34; Dirty face & # 34;, he himself has suffered such discrimination in his own flesh due to the color of his skin.
El Chojin, in addition to rapping, has tried unusual aspects among Spanish MCs. In 2005 he participated in the film & # 34; Tangier & # 34; by Juán Madrid making a small cameo and composing the central theme of the film's soundtrack. In 2008 he wrote and starred in the play & # 34; The soul of Alexander Oboe & # 34;, a monologue with music in which he talked about the difficulties of living far from your country through the journey that the protagonist makes. In the 2008/09 season, he participated as a regular talk show host on the Cadena SER political news program & # 34; El Foro & # 34; Directed by journalist Javier Manzano. Likewise, in 2009 he became & # 34;officially & # 34; the fastest rapper in the world by achieving a Guinness Record after being able to rap 921 syllables in 60 seconds. In 2010 he achieved what many consider a milestone by putting rap music on the Telediario de La 2 de Televisión España, it was a rhymed editorial in which the rapper offered his vision of current events weekly. The Chojin writes poetry, articles and different texts. From February 2010 to May 2013, he published a weekly opinion column in the digital newspaper FronteraD. According to him, he affirms in several interviews, 2012 will be the year that sees the release of his first collection of poems (& # 34; 98 rhymes and 7 legends & # 34;).
He is an artist who admits that he owes himself 100% to his public (an example of this is the song "Fan no, amigo", which leads him to only go to bars that have the sign of & #34;we don't have Wi-Fi, talk to each other"), which is why he is very active on social networks. He is concerned with maintaining a coherent line without contradictions within each of his albums, thus making the deepest songs enjoyable to listen to. In October 2011 he has been chosen by & # 34; TORRENT & # 34; to be the godfather of the falla chronicler Vicent Beguer. The Junta de Extremadura honored El Chojin with the 2011 Cultures award for "his work, determined by him in favor of a more just, egalitarian and tolerant society".
Since March 2016, he has presented the weekly program of La 2 de Televisión Española "Ritmo Urbano", dedicated to hip hop culture. In 2019 she signed for the Zapeando de La Sexta program.
