1971-1980: Childhood and artistic beginnings
Ariadna Thalía Sodi Miranda was born in the Spanish Hospital in Mexico City on August 26, 1971. She is the daughter of the Mexican scientist, writer and criminologist Ernesto Sodi Pallares and the Mexican businesswoman Yolanda Miranda Mange. name is due to her mother's fondness for Greek stories. When she was little, she was nicknamed "Yuya" or "Yuyita" by her family in reference to the colloquial term by which the lark bird species is known in Yucatán. She is the youngest of five sisters: Laura Zapata, Federica, Gabriela and Ernestina Sodi. On her father's side, she is part of the Sodi family, a well-known Mexican family.
When she was only one year old, Thalía appeared in a commercial for soft drinks. At the age of four, she began taking ballet and piano lessons at the National Conservatory of Music. In 1977, the father of the Sodi sisters died of diabetes when Thalía was just five years old. The singer later admitted that his death had shocked her considerably, and she could not speak for a year, so her Mother had to take her to several doctors and psychologists. In an interview with People magazine, Thalía commented that her mother had told her: "Look, baby, we're only women in this house. We are in a society of men. You have to be stronger than them, you have to have the heart of a man in you."
Thalía completed her elementary education at the Liceo Franco Mexicano, where she was taught bilingually in French and Spanish and was known as a "formidable" student. She sometimes played with slingshots and practiced baseball in her free time. In 1979, Thalía appeared in the Mexican film La guerra de las pies, however her name does not appear in the end credits. Because she practiced gymnastics, she wanted to become an Olympic gymnast, inspired by Nadia Comăneci. However, according to Univision, her desire was to become a biologist or psychologist. Her older sister, Laura Zapata, used to take her to the theater where she worked daily, which defined her interest in acting.
1981-1989: Din-Din and Timbiriche
In 1981, at the age of nine, Thalía joined as the vocalist of a children's group called Pac Man, which had just been formed in order to participate in the singing festival Let's play a song of Televisa. Shortly after Pac Man changed his name to Din-Din, and with said group the singer performed at parties and occasional events, recording four albums between 1982 and 1983 (En accion, Remembering Rock and Roll, We are someone very special and Pitubailando), until the group's disappearance.
After the disintegration of Din-Din in 1983, Thalía participated as a soloist in the following two annual festivals Juguemos a cantar. In 1984, she came second with the interpretation of the musical theme "Moderna niña del rock", and this gave her the opportunity to participate in the chorus of the musical Vaselina, a children's version of the successful musical of the same name (Grease), where the members of the Timbiriche group performed (Sasha Sökol, Benny Ibarra, Erik Rubín, Diego Schoening, Mariana Garza, Alix Bauer and Paulina Rubio), the children's band promoted by by Televisa. She started out as one of the dancers in the back of the stage, but later she landed the starring role of Sandy Dee in the musical, and in the end she completed a total of 500 performances of Vaseline alongside Timbiriche.. In September 1986, after Sasha Sökol left Timbiriche, Thalía joined the band. By then Timbiriche had already recorded six albums. The following year, in 1987, she was offered to participate in the telenovela Poor Miss Limantour. This production was the debut of the singer on a television program, when she performed in an episode with the character of Diana. That same year she recorded with Timbiriche the main theme of the youth telenovela Quinceañera, in which she co-starred with the character Beatriz. Quinceañera was the first youth telenovela that addressed social problems such as drugs or gangs. production won the award for Best Telenovela at the 1988 TVyNovelas Awards, and Thalía in turn won the Best New Actress award. Mexican women who even imitated the hairstyle and way of dressing of their characters.
Together with Timbiriche, Thalía recorded three albums: Timbiriche VII (1987), the double disc Timbiriche VIII and IX (1988) and Los clásicos de Timbiriche (1989). The latter consisted of a compilation of the band's hits, originally recorded in 1987, with new symphonic arrangements, since it had the participation of the Mexico Philharmonic Orchestra. Two new members also participated in the album: Eduardo Capetillo and Edith Márquez, as well as Benny, Sasha and Mariana, who had already left the group. In 1989 Thalía left Timbiriche, being replaced by Patricia Tanús. Although Thalía was not a of the original members of Timbiriche, and "she had to put up with a lot of insults, rudeness and practical jokes from her colleagues" according to Martha Zavaleta, one of the band's founders, "Thalía is the only one who really has a solid career, both in the music as in acting", he pointed out. Joseph Haniana, of the Los Angeles Times newspaper, said that "with Thalía as singer and bassist, Timbiriche soon became one of the main groups, not only in Mexico, but in all of Latin America". Even, according to different media such as La Prensa de San Diego , Thalía is the one that has had the most success and international projection of the "timbiriches".
In 1989, she starred in the telenovela, Luz y sombra, where she assumed the role of Alma, being her first leading role at the same time. Shortly after, she traveled to Los Angeles, California to take courses in English at the University of California, Los Angeles as well as lessons in music, singing, acting and dancing before beginning her solo career.
1990-1993: Thalía, Mundo de cristal and Love
In 1990, Thalía returned to Mexico and released her first solo studio album, titled Thalía, which was produced by her then partner, Alfredo Díaz-Ordaz Borja, and published by Fonovisa, Televisa's record label. It contains the singles "Amarillo azul", "I think of you", "A pact between the two" and "Saliva"; The singer wrote together with Díaz-Ordaz Borja the last two mentioned, which after their premiere were the subject of controversy as they were considered provocative. At that time, Thalía used to wear flowers and stuffed animals during her presentations to promote the album.
In September 1991, the singer released her second studio album, Mundo de cristal, which represents her last collaboration with Díaz Ordaz. In this production, released under the same record label, she changed her image to one that involved outfits full of flowers. This style, called flower power by the singer herself, was inspired by the hippie movement. In Mundo de cristal, Thalía wrote some of the songs and these reflect his sentimental situation at that time. For example, "In silence" is dedicated to his father. The singles "In privacy", "I need you", "Crossfire" and "Sweat" were released from this album, the latter considered provocative. premiere, the album achieved high sales in Mexico and received a double gold record certification. That same year Thalía co-hosted with Emilio Aragón the Spanish television program VIP Noche, produced by the Telecinco network. In total, she participated in six broadcasts broadcast in 1992.
In October 1992, Thalía released her third studio album and her last under the Fonovisa record label, entitled Love, which was recorded in Spain and produced by Luis Carlos Esteban. To promote the album, six singles were chosen: "Flor de juventud", "Love", "Sangre", "María Mercedes", "Don't try to deceive me" and "La vie en rose", the latter being a version of the theme performed by Grace Jones and originally by French singer Édith Piaf. Thalía sang half of her version in Spanish and the rest in French. Meanwhile, the song "Sangre" was written inspired by Díaz Ordaz with whom she had broken her sentimental relationship a short time before, and, like some of her previous singles, "Sangre" was considered a provocative song. an evolution of Thalía as a performer by experimenting with new musical genres, especially with electronic sounds. After its premiere, Love reached position 15 on the Billboard Latin Pop Albums in 1993, and sold more than 200,000 copies in Mexico alone during its first month of debut on the market. As for her image, the Egyptian cross used both as a logo for the album and in the costumes of the actress also stands out, which consisted of tiny bodies and long dress trains. led to becoming a sex symbol. However, for David Lara, from the Impre.com website —of the ImpreMedia company— "the rebellious image that prevented her from being accepted by all kinds of audiences for her first two albums, which caused great controversy on Latin American radio for his bold and different lyrics" had changed with the publication of this material. [ron] its popularity".
1992-1996: The Marias Trilogy
Three years after her television appearance in Luz y sombra, Thalía resumed her career as an actress and starred in the telenovela María Mercedes, the first of the series known as Trilogía de las Marías, produced by Televisa. For her performance in this, the singer won the TVyNovelas award in the 1993 edition, as "Best Youth Actress", together with a Heraldo as "Revelation Actress", an Eres award in the category of "Best Actress" and a Bravo award. as "Best Youth Actress". In 1994, Televisa premiered Marimar and, the following year, the series concluded with María, la del barrio. In the trilogy, Thalía played a woman of humble origins named María.
Each of the productions enjoyed wide success in its original broadcast, being seen by more than a billion people. Due to the popularity it gained, it began to be known as the "Queen of Soap Operas." However, there was some criticism from the press, which negatively judged the stereotypes that he reflected in his character, in addition to agreeing that the story was "basically the same" throughout the series. Marimar as the most successful of the cycle, and the one that brought the artist the most fame. This production broke audience records in more than 40 countries in its original exhibition. Many African countries, such as the Ivory Coast —whose fans were known at the time as "marimarfilos"— in its capital city, many mosques brought forward the Ramadan schedule so that their believers could watch the soap opera. In fact, many Abidjanis in traffic jams stopped halfway and went to the shops of television repairmen or bars that had televisions to watch the soap opera. Ivorian newspapers such as Top-Visages and Tele-Moroir increased their circulations by publishing summaries of future episodes of the novel. According to Al-Manar, Marimar holds the record for screen share in Arab countries, obtaining 94.7%; only the final chapter obtained 97.8%, a similar situation with the last chapter of María la del barrio, which obtained 94.1%.
Terra Networks considers María la del barrio and Marimar some of "The Best Soap Operas of All Time". In addition to the Philippines, according to According to the Mexican Population Registry, names such as "Marimar", "María Mercedes" or "Thalía" multiplied in newborns. Meanwhile, in Peru it has been one of those responsible for the popularity of La Virgen de Guadalupe.
1994-1998: EMI, En éxtasis, Nandito Ako, Amor a la mexicana and internationalization
In 1994, during the broadcast of the telenovela Marimar, Thalía signed a contract with the record company EMI, with which she would later start recording her fourth studio album, En éxtasis , which was published in September 1995. It marked his first association with producer Emilio Estefan, with whom he would later collaborate on a successful series of musical productions. It should be added that Estefan, along with his wife Gloria, was the founder of a production company in Miami dedicated to the crossover recordings of Hispanic artists such as Ricky Martin or Enrique Iglesias for the US market. i>In ecstasy were "Amándote", "Thank God", "I want to make love to you", "María la del barrio" and "Piel morena". On this occasion, the album is more oriented to the Latin pop genre. According to Joey Guerra, a critic specializing in Amazon.com:
Thalía's first album with the EMI Latin seal separates the Mexican singer and actress from the disposable pop from her previous albums in favor of richer and more diverse sounds. However there are some loose moments on this album, although Thalía is clearly beginning to define her path as a soloist. The change is largely due to producers Emilio Estefan Jr. and Kike Santander, who have skillfully disguised Thalía's shortcomings as a singer with successful production values. The theme “Piel brunette”, the first single and the best of the album tracks, is an intoxicating and sensual cumbia. Thalía shines in “Amrte”, a dance floor produced by A. B. Quintanilla, and even manages with a sweet version of Juan Gabriel in “Thank God”. The bullets "I want to make you love" and "Lagrimes", the latter co-written by Thalía, also draw attention to unexpected shades and nuances.
En éxtasis allowed Thalía to be the first Mexican soloist to obtain a record sales certification in Brazil and remains the best-selling album by a Mexican soloist in that country., became the first Mexican and Latin singer to obtain a double platinum record in Argentina for said album.
In 1995, Thalía began filming the telenovela María la del barrio, the last of the Marías series. At the beginning of 1996, due to an excess of work, she had to be hospitalized due to a nervous breakdown and shortly after she returned to Los Angeles to rest for a considerable time. She later confessed, in an interview in Brazil, that after having recorded María la del barrio was about to abandon her career, due to "excessive fatigue, mental, physical and psychological exhaustion".
In January 1997 his first compilation album titled Nandito Ako was released, containing four songs in Tagalog, the official language of the Philippines, as well as five English versions of In Ecstasy. and a Spanish remix of “Amándote”. The only single that came off this set was "Nandito Ako". After her debut, sales for a total of one million copies of this production were recorded worldwide. Barely a month after the premiere of Nandito Ako, in February, the press chose the artist as Queen of the Viña del Mar Festival.
Her fifth studio album, Amor a la mexicana, was released in June of the same year and also produced by Emilio Estefan, in which songs like «Mujer latina», «From where I am”, “For love”, “Moonless nights” and “Amor a la mexicana”. The album obtained multiple record certifications in various countries, including two platinum records in Spain and Argentina. Since its release, estimates suggest that it has sold more than five million copies worldwide, making it the album with the highest sales in Thalía's career, in addition to being one of the best-selling Latin pop records in the history of the industry. The eponymous song reached the top position in 14 countries and the French union SNEP certified her with a silver disc for her high sales in the country. With Amor a la mexicana Thalía managed to perform in many countries around the world.
Jason Birchmeier of the Allmusic website commented on the album:
In essence, Love of the Mexican is a more complete version of Thalía's previous album, In ecstasy [..] The best moments of the album are the writings and produced by [..] composer Kike Santander and producer Emilio Estefan Jr., the duo responsible for the successful milestone "Piel brunette". [The duo] not only returns for this new material, but they are the brain of the entire album mostly. The results are expected to be excellent. The majority of the songs here is driven by the same kind of Latin dance rhythms that had driven «Piel brunette» to such heights (a little salsa, a little cumbia, a little band, a little bit of ballad and so on). But it is not just a Latin dance album, because it is also one of well written songs, with adequate and irresistible Mexican lyrics and stribillos sticky. In addition, it is a concise set with very few, if any, boring moments; ten strong songs on average of four minutes each. It could be the best album of Thalía as a whole.
After the success of Amor a la mexicana, Thalía recorded the English, Spanish and Portuguese versions of the song "Journey to the Past", produced by Atlantic Records, as part of the band soundtrack of the first animated film by 20th Century Fox, Anastasia (1997). In that year the artist moved to Miami. In February 1998, she participated as a prominent figure in the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, after renewing his contract with Televisa that would lead him to star in three more telenovelas in the short term. In that same year he participated in the soundtrack of two more films, but this time with songs from his album Amor a la mexicana: again for a 20th Century Fox film, called Ever After: A Cinderella Story with the song "It's your love" and finally in Dance with me , but this time for Columbia Pictures with the theme "Echa pa'lante".
1999-2001: Rosalinda, Arrasando and album with a band
In 1999 Thalía ventured into the cinema with the film in English Mambo Café, written and directed by the Chilean Reuben González. Originally the tape would have been shot in November 1998, in New York, however in early 1999 filming was postponed. Mambo Café was released in January 2000 in Mexico, Greece and Russia, distributed by Kushner Locke Entertainment, and in the words of its own director and writer, "it's a Latino version of Saturday Night Fever". Thalía played the character of the young Puerto Rican Nadya, who visits her family after taking a break from university.
In 1999, after finishing the recordings of Mambo Café, she returned to television with the telenovela Rosalinda where she played the protagonist of the same name. At that time, Rosalinda was considered the most expensive Televisa production in its entire history, as well as the best-seller, being distributed in 135 countries. In an interview granted during that period, Thalía commented: " The [tele] soap operas have opened up the world to me, because the audience for [tele] soap operas is much more passionate than that of the cinema. Plus TV is free."
After completing her participation in Rosalinda, the singer released her sixth studio album, Arrasando, in April 2000, which was once again produced by Emilio Estefan. This contains twelve songs, eight of which Thalía wrote the lyrics. From this album came off singles like "Arrasando", "Between the sea and a star", "Return to me" and "Reincarnation". "Between the Sea and a Star" became the singer's first song to top three Billboard popularity charts: Top Latin Songs, Latin Pop Airplay and Latin Tropical/Salsa Airplay. According to Jason Birchmeier's review, published on the Allmusic website:
[..] Burning consolidated [to Thalía] as a complete superstar in 2000, when its five main singles began to unfold. The album is modern, very typical of its time; that is, right at the beginning of the millennium, when the music of great intensity and dance trance it became fashionable in the fashion circles. Most of the Burning plays with that style, with its abundance of synthesizers and dance rhythms, as well as with its extalent choirs that seem to reach the stars song after song. [...] putting Burning in perspective, it differs clearly so much from its predecessor (Love of Mexican) as of his successor (Thalía). All are among their best jobs, being Burning probably the most artificing. It's more adventurous than rationalized Thalíaalthough not as free as Love of Mexican.
In July 2000, the album was certified two times platinum and one gold for its sales in the US; it was also certified platinum in Argentina, Slovakia, Mexico and Spain, while in Chile, Greece, the Philippines, Uruguay, Venezuela and in Central America it was awarded a gold record. A year later, Arrasando had managed to sell close to two million units in the world. At the Latin Grammys, the album earned two nominations in the categories of Best Female Pop Vocal Album and Best Recording Engineering for an Album, winning in the latter category.
In August 2001, Thalía's second compilation was released, titled Thalía con banda: Grandes hitos, which is basically a new version of her previous hits oriented towards the Sinaloan banda genre. The production was recorded in Los Mochis and was produced by Guillermo Gil. After its premiere, on October 17, 2001, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has certified it as a platinum and gold record for its sales in the US. The album ranked as one in Greece and Spain. and in Hungary it reached its maximum position at four. PROMUSICAE has certified it with a gold record by selling more than 80,000 in Spain, making it the first album of its genre to obtain a record certification in that country. achieved notable success in Israel, Turkey, Bulgaria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Russia and Canada among other countries.
2002-2003: Thalía, kidnapping of her sisters and album in English
In May 2002, Thalía released her seventh studio album, under the title Thalía, just like her previous production from 1990. Once again she had the presence of Emilio Estefan «Jr. », as well as that of the Colombian Estéfano. On this album, he performed three songs in English and had as singles the songs "Dance, Dance (The Mexican)", "Tú y yo", "No me enseñaste" and "Who cares?", the latter is a version from the song by the Spanish group Alaska y Dinarama. After its premiere, it was certified gold in Argentina and Mexico, platinum in Puerto Rico and double platinum in the US.
On September 22, 2002, while promoting the album, Laura Zapata and Ernestina Sodi (Thalía's sisters) were kidnapped in Mexico City. Finally, on October 10, their captors released them, once they they received money in exchange for their lives. According to Ernestina in her book Deliver us from evil, Thalía was in charge of paying the ransom. This event was controversial in the press given the circumstances in which it took place and also the subsequent lawsuit that arose between the three sisters.
“I have had the fortune to make a net international career; I have crossover with themes such as "Love the Mexican" and even with "Piel Brunna", a song that led me to conquer continents in my language.... from France to hidden places that no one imagines. But since I'm contreras and who cares, I feel like I did my career backwards, with the base here in Mexico; then I went to Central and South America, then with the Latins of the American Union; hence I went to Europe and Asia; now I'm going to put my banderite in the United States." —Thalía on its first production in English: Thalía (2003). |
At the beginning of 2003, the third compilation album by the artist and the first crossover type appeared on the market under the title Thalía's Hits Remixed, containing twelve remixes of his most successful songs. This work became one of the best-selling remix albums of all time, selling more than two million units worldwide. Later, in July of that same year, his eighth studio album called Thalía, the third with the same title in her musical career, this according to Thalía: "because I don't like to complicate myself and so they don't confuse me, they know it's me". This album differed from its predecessors by being intended for the English-speaking market, since most of its songs are in English. It was released under the Virgin Records label, EMI affiliate, produced by Cory Rooney and Steve Morales and mixes various musical genres, including pop, pop rock and R&B. The kidnapping of his sisters occurred, but he had to suspend the recording because he felt "a lot of confusion." At the end of the kidnapping, the interpreter continued with the recording of the album and commented: "[...] when I returned to the studio it was like a gust of fresh air and suddenly all the songs became positive and pleasant". songs were written by Thalía, while the song "Save the Day" was inspired by the attacks of September 11, 2001 and the song "I Want You" was recorded as a duet with rapper Fat Joe. Reviews of the album were generally bad. Neil Drumming, editor of the American magazine Entertainment Weekly in his review said:
The opening and first single of the album, "I Want You" presents the [...] rapper of the Bronx Fat Joe remaking the music of the first success of [...] Big Pun «Don't Wanna Be a Player». [...] the court only fixes the tone insulso and impóluto of the rest of the CD. It becomes also obvious from here that Thalía's voice, a weak and distant snoring only a little more acceptable than that of Jennifer Lopez, will not add or subtract anything to the full effect of any piece; everything is reduced to what producers have in mind. [..] There are then dance themes crossover: “You and I” sounds like Shakira, and “Don’t Look Back”, the most attractive moment of recording, shows that Kylie Minogue’s production team can version “Love at First Sight” more or less equally for anyone. And finally, Bono & Co might want to consult with their lawyers the similarity between "Closer to You" and their "With or Without You". Add to all this familiarity the fact that four of the fourteen themes Thalía they sing in Spanish at the end of the album, and you will have what seems to be a listening experience without any originality.
At the same time, the record obtained a modest commercial reception; according to Nielsen SoundScan in its first week on sale, it sold more than 50,000 copies in the US and peaked at number eleven on the Billboard 200, while in the rest of the world it managed to sell only about 20,000 copies in its first week. As of 2005, the album was known to have sold only about 200,000 units in the US according to Nielsen SoundScan. However, in Japan, the RIAJ has certified it with a gold record, being the only album by an artist of Hispanic origin with a certification in that country during 2003.
2004-2007: Greatest Hits, The Sixth Sense and Radio Show
In February 2004, the compilation album Greatest Hits was released, a new set that compiled the most successful songs from their previous albums released by EMI. From here the singles "Cerca de ti" and "Acción y reacción" emerged, the latter being about her sentimental relationship with her husband Tommy Mottola. In order to promote the compilation, the singer embarked on a tour called High Voltage Tour, with which he toured several cities in the US and Mexico. Nonetheless, the tour met with a poor reception both commercially and critically. According to Chicago Tribune reporter Alejandro Rera, one of the problems centered on the few dancers on stage during performances and, in contrast, the numerous costumes chosen by the singer between each performance.
In July 2005, Thalía's ninth studio album was released, entitled El sixth sense, for which the singer also served as executive producer. This album is inspired by her spiritual search for the paranormal events that she experienced as a child, and at that time, Thalía defined it as her most honest album. From this production came the songs "Amar sin ser amada", "Un alma sentenciada" and "Seducción". For Joey Guerra the album marked a "return to form [sic]", which he praised given the singer's previous releases. The album received generally favorable reviews. In November of that year, the album managed to be certified with two platinum discs for its sales in the US.
Shortly after the album's release, Thalía announced that she would no longer work in a telenovela, rescinding the contract that bound her to Televisa. In January 2006, the singer acquired US citizenship after completing eight years of residence in That country. This fact caused some controversy in Mexico, which led Thalía to clarify that she would not renounce her Mexican nationality. "godmother" of it on her debut. Shortly after her previous album was re-released under the title The Sixth Sense: Re+Loaded. This reissue included unpublished songs such as "No, no, no", which she recorded as a duet with the group Aventura, and new versions of the songs that appear in the original material.
In March 2007, an agreement was announced between ABC Radio and Thalía to produce a radio program called Conexión Thalía Radio Show, with a duration of two hours every Saturday. In the show, hosted by the artist herself, informative notes and interviews with other Latino celebrities would be addressed, aimed at audiences from 18 to 34 years of age. About this new project, she mentioned that "it represents a lovely opportunity to meet other people, to reach places that you are limited on television or in the press." In its debut it was broadcast in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago. As of January 15, 2009, the show had more than twelve million listeners in the US.
2008-2011: Lunada, Sony Music and Front Row
Her tenth studio album, Lunada, was released in June 2008 and was produced by Emilio Estefan. The first single from the album was "Ten paciencia", and it has a total of eleven songs. The production also included "Bendita", a song that Thalía wrote for her daughter, Sabrina Sakaë. The month after its premiere, Lunada debuted at number ten on the Top Latin Albums by Billboard; however, it did not manage to be as successful as his previous albums, due to low sales and little promotion, for which he was considered a " "commercial" failure, including by Thalía herself; in fact, Lunada sold barely 200,000 units worldwide, making it the least-selling album of her entire career. In October, Thalía revealed that she had Lyme disease, caused by a tick bite, while she was exercising around her home. In the end, after a long and strong course of antibiotics, she successfully recovered from the infection.
In November 2008, Thalía announced her separation from the EMI record label, after having recorded twelve albums for more than a decade with said label. In all that time, it was revealed that 10 million copies of the interpreter's dozen albums had been sold. me Network, where she participates as a presenter and addresses issues about the upbringing of young children by parents. In that period it was revealed that Thalía earned two million US dollars for each commercial in which she participated.
In July 2009 it was announced that the singer's next album, Primera fila: Thalía, would be acoustic, produced by the Sony Music Entertainment label, and would go on sale in December of the same year. According to the singer: "I made this record to get closer to people in a different way, I didn't do it to be awarded, I did it to get closer to the fans and also to get closer to those who never heard of it." Thalía liked it". In October of that year, Thalía performed at a concert offered at the White House to commemorate Hispanic musical heritage; shortly after, that same month, she debuted the first single from Primera fila, the song titled "Equivocada", which was followed by "What will become of you (Como vai você)", "I'm in love", "Teach me to live" and "Next Friday". I have three octaves in the register, I start very low because my voice is very deep, sometimes, so it's 3 octaves from very low (the normal and minimum is 12). But when I sing with my singing teacher, we exercise with operatic songs, like "Arias from Carmen", "Caro mio ben", Italian songs, very old and there, I am a mezzo-soprano» During her career as a soloist, Thalía has experimented with various musical genres, from Latin pop, pop rock and dance pop, to cumbia, bachata, among others.
According to Billboard, she is a successful singer-songwriter. Gladis Arias of El Heraldo comments that "Thalía is one of the most powerful voices in Latin pop". they have remained skeptical of his work; David Dorantes of La Voz de Houston, commented that «Thalía has had radio hits with songs like "Amor a la mexicana", "Sudor" and "Arrasando", contained in records that are rather mediocre due to their predictable pop". pop music by saying: «in the world of [s]hopping pop, Pau always had to be the third in contention, between Shakira (the most "enthroned") and Thalía (more "popu" than pop)".
It is often cited that her role as an actress brought her worldwide fame. In 1997, Teresa Aguilera critic and editor of Billboard commented that Latin music He had male idols like Luis Miguel or Ricky Martin. Although the Colombian Shakira had achieved enormous success in the Latin American region in 1996 and 1997, the Latina who had become a true reach and celebrity in the world had been Thalía with her "Marías". While with fellow producer Alfredo Díaz Ordaz, who was her boyfriend, Thalía dedicated her back cover of En éxtasis and in an interview with Diario Clarín He commented that when Ordaz died, he hit rock bottom and was reunited with God. «He took me by the hand and led me to the light. Since then I've only had hits."
On the other hand, Thalía has been known for renewing her image through her presentations in the media, live or with her music videos. Ana Enríquez from About.com comments that: "her The look of the early 90s did not go at all with what was beginning to be seen in fashion, which although it welcomed mini-shorts, hip pants and panty-blouses, it was not in the least the visual saturation of her clothing" and extended that "with tiny shorts or tight leggings, combined with bustiers, high heels, With a tousled mane and showing her short waist, Thalía earned the reputation of a sex symbol". In "A pact between the two", one of her first videos, Thalía is chased through the jungle by members of a cannibalistic tribe. According to Ed Grant, a reviewer for Time magazine, many of his videos from the 1990s are "outlandish", especially "Thank God" and " Love to the Mexican ". For the live album Primera fila, Thalía adopted a more "natural" image by dressing casually for her performance in front of a limited audience. This was notable since the press mentioned that the public previously saw her as a "sex symbol and a plastic singer". Thalía herself mentioned:
When my health was compromised [in reference to Lyme disease], I had to restructure my entire life, in all aspects, from rethinking who I am and where I go, what I like, what factors are stressful to me and what makes me happy, and when one asks those questions and answers, you hurt or do not like, and you have the task of changing, and I changed [...] People wear a lot of masks so they don't see him vulnerable, sensitive, and it turned out to me to be a release, like it was to take a weight off all the stereotypes that I have forged, that I have created, that I have given them fire or not, and that have grown up.
Although in a 2010 interview with Shangay Express magazine, she said: «I still have a drag inside me, that's why from time to time I like to resort to complex looks and voluptuous, because in life you have to have fun."
