Tetsujin 28-gō (鉄人28号 ? ), also known outside Japan as Iron Man 28 and Gigantor, is a science fiction manga written by Mitsuteru Yokoyama.. Published in Shōnen Magazine in 1956, it was the forerunner of the mecha genre of giant robots in manga and the first hit for Yokoyama, who was then 21 years old.

The series was very successful, and an animated version was produced in 1963. The series was exported to the United States, where the robot and characters were renamed.

Plot

Ironman 28 (Tetsujin 28), as it was known in some parts of Latin America -in Mexico and Peru it was known as "El Hombre de Acero"- was about a robot built by doctor Cañedo (Dr. Kaneda in the original), being his son Ricardo (Shotaro in the original) who controlled it using a small remote control box. Also there were Dr. Eduardo Espinoza (Dr. Shikishima in the original), his wife Sandra, his daughter Marta and Inspector Efraín (Inspector Ootsuka in the original).

It had two dubbings, the first one that was given in Peru in the 70's, the robot was known as "El Hombre de Acero", and the boy who drove it as Carlos Centella, instead in the version that he gave on TV in the mid-80s in the dubbing they mentioned it as IRONMAN 28, and the now boy was Ricardo Canedo.

The series has many enemies, usually appearing on the scene the mobster known as Branch, who was the director of an outlaw organization, who had seemingly unlimited resources and made use of great advances in technology to commit their misdeeds, with a wide range of giant robots.

Ironman 28 was not alone, he shared his adventures with a small robot, named "08", who used cassettes to follow instructions and who on more than one occasion was decisive for Ironman to succeed in their missions.

Ironman 28 had no weapons, he fought bare-knuckle with a couple of special moves like the "Demolition Punch" and the "Flying Kick", more than once he used his crest that resembles a Roman general to tear apart or ram the enemies.

On the other hand, there is the saga «Satan of Space» (or «Satan of the Universe» according to translations for Latin America): an extraterrestrial being who wanted to conquer the Earth and sends his son to reconnaissance, although he begins to discover human feelings. For this, a mission was formed with several spaceships to intercept and annihilate it, together with Ironman 28. Here the series ends, with a battle against this being.

Ironman 28 was the first series in the Japanese Mecha genre and left its mark on the manga and anime market. Here he marked a milestone in the generation of the 80s in all of Latin America.
