Territorial organization of Armenia
The Republic of Armenia is subdivided into eleven administrative divisions. Of these, ten are provinces, known as marzer (Armenian: oggles) or in the singular as marz (Armenian: 겴ꀡրԦ).
Yerevan is treated separately and given special administrative status as the capital of the country. The chief executive in each of the 10 marzer is the marzpet, appointed by the government of Armenia. In Yerevan, the chief executive is the mayor, appointed by the president.

Municipalities (hamaynkner)
Within each province of the republic, there are municipal communities (hamaynkner, singular hamaynk), currently considered the second level administrative division in Armenia. Each municipality – officially known as a community, whether rural or urban – is an autonomous entity and consists of one or more settlements (bnakavayrer, singular bnakavayr). Settlements are classified as cities (kaghakner, singular kaghak) or towns (gyugher, singular gyugh). As of January 2018, Armenia was divided into 503 communities, of which 46 were urban and 457 rural. The capital, Yerevan, also has community status. Additionally, Yerevan is divided into twelve semi-autonomous districts.
