Tenebrae is a first-person shooter game engine released under the terms of the GPL license. Tenebrae is based on the code of Quake, the engine developed by id Software. The name Tenebrae means darkness in Latin.

The main features of Tenebrae are pixel-by-pixel lighting and shadow casting. These features are also present in the latest generation DOOM 3 engine, developed by id. However, Tenebrae has been early in proving its potential for computer gaming, having initially been released in 2002, well before the release of DOOM 3, scheduled for 2004.

Due to the computational demands placed on it by the engine, Tenebrae requires very modern hardware to run properly.
