Syntax

There are many templates of standard chess diagrams:

  • Template:Chess diagram (square size 26x26 px)
  • Template:Small chess diagram (square size 22x22 px)
  • Template:Chess Diagram 5x5; Template:Chess Diagram 6x6 (the largest, squares of 26px; can also be used for smaller sections of the board or Miniajedrez and Chess The Alamos)

There are also chess variant templates:

  • Template:Chess Diagram 8x10 (Capablanca Chess with 10 columns, 26x26 px)
  • Template:Raumschach Diagram (Table 5x5x5 for Three-dimensional Chess, 22x22 px)
  • Template:Omega chess diagram (Omega Chess with a 10x10 board + 4 corners, 22x22 px)

Syntax is basically the same for everyone.

Parameters:

  • – defines the horizontal alignment (floating) of the entire board, should be tright or tleft (or nothing)
  • – The text that appears above the diagram may be empty;
  • , ,...

    – defines corresponding boxes of the board, see below;

  • – the text below the diagram may be empty; optional - may not be placed (even not in the other templates)

A box is defined by the name of the piece or the empty parameter. The names of the pieces are given in algebraic notation:

  • Chess kll44.png Chess kld44.png Chess kdl44.png Chess kdd44.png k = king (king)
  • Chess qld44.png Chess qll44.png Chess qdd44.png Chess qdl44.png q = queen (dama)
  • Chess rll44.png Chess rld44.png Chess rdl44.png Chess rdd44.png r = rook (torre)
  • Chess bld44.png Chess bll44.png Chess bdd44.png Chess bdl44.png b = bishop (alfil)
  • Chess nll44.png Chess nld44.png Chess ndl44.png Chess ndd44.png n = knight (horn)
  • Chess pld44.png Chess pll44.png Chess pdd44.png Chess pdl44.png P = pawn (peon)

There are also some magical pieces available:

  • Chess all44.png Chess ald44.png Chess adl44.png Chess add44.png a = archbishop (arzobispo Δ horse + alfil)
  • Chess cld44.png Chess cll44.png Chess cdd44.png Chess cdl44.png c = chancelor (cancellor 8.000 horse + tower)
  • Chess fll44.png Chess fld44.png Chess fdl44.png Chess fdd44.png f = upside-down king (right backwards)
  • Chess gld44.png Chess gll44.png Chess gdd44.png Chess gdl44.png g = upside-down queen (dome backwards)
  • Chess mll44.png Chess mld44.png Chess mdl44.png Chess mdd44.png m = upside-down rook (turn backwards)
  • Chess eld44.png Chess ell44.png Chess edd44.png Chess edl44.png e = upside-down bishop (backward ivory)
  • Chess sll44.png Chess sld44.png Chess sdl44.png Chess sdd44.png s = upside-down knight (backside down)
  • Chess hld44.png Chess hll44.png Chess hdd44.png Chess hdl44.png h = upside-down pawn (backsided pawn)
  • Chess zll44.png Chess zld44.png Chess zdl44.png Chess zdd44.png z = champion - for chess Omega (field)
  • Chess wld44.png Chess wll44.png Chess wdd44.png Chess wdl44.png w = wizard - for chess Omega (mago)

These letters are combined with "l" for Light=White (white), or "d" for Dark=Black (black). So "kl" is a White King, and "nd" is a Black Horse. First the letter corresponding to the piece is placed and second the letter of the color.

A black square is written using "_", spaces, or nothing. It is recommended to use two spaces.

  • Chess d44.pngChess l44.png ≤2 square in white

You can also use "xx" for a cross,"xo" for a black circle or "oo" for a white one.

  • Chess xxd44.pngChess xxl44.png xx = cross/x
  • Chess xod44.pngChess xol44.png xo = black circle
  • Chess ood44.pngChess ool44.png oo = white circle

You can also add numbers to the box using "x1" for 1, "x2" for 2,..., "x9" for 9. There's no 0.

  • Chess x1d44.pngChess x1l44.png x1
  • Chess x2d44.pngChess x2l44.png x2
  • Chess x3d44.pngChess x3l44.png x3
  • Chess x4d44.pngChess x4l44.png x4
  • Chess x5d44.pngChess x5l44.png x5
  • Chess x6d44.pngChess x6l44.png x6
  • Chess x7d44.pngChess x7l44.png x7
  • Chess x8d44.pngChess x8l44.png x8
  • Chess x9d44.pngChess x9l44.png x9

Examples

In the following examples the rows and columns are listed. Because any text between "UD=" and the next "VAID" is ignored, numbers and letters can be added without affecting the output.

This diagram is recommended for common use as a main diagram in opening articles, finals, games, positions, etc. See the corresponding code below.

This problem uses the method partial retrograde analysis.

This can be convenient in chess trouble articles. Note that both in the header and foot can be used bold Italian. It can also be used to jump online.
