In Cronquist's system of scientific classification of plants, the Teligonaceae were a monotypic family of herbs, containing the genus Theligonum. They were characterized by having simple, opposite or alternate leaves. Unisexual flowers, monoecious, monochlamyd; the male ones with 7-20 stamens and the female ones with inferior ovary. Drupaceous fruit. On the edges of lagoons.

In the most recent phylogenetic classification, they are considered part of the Rubiaceae.
