Televen (contraction of Televisión and Venezolana; officially Corporación Televen C. A.) is a network of Venezuelan open television, was founded on July 23, 1986 by Omar Camero Zamora, and began broadcasting on July 3, 1988.

It transmits from the city of Caracas through open signal terrestrial frequencies for the entire country. Venevisión is currently its main and strongest competition, since 2007 with the closure of RCTV by the Government of Hugo Chávez.

History

Early years (1986-1999)

In 1986, Televen Corporation began its operations in the Miranda Business Center, located in Los Ruices, Caracas. On that date, the administration, human resources, marketing and engineering departments were created. A year later, in 1987, the first pre-sale was held at the Chacaíto theater.

On July 3, 1988, Televen began broadcasting on channel 10 in Caracas. At that time, the station did not make its own productions and its broadcasts only covered the metropolitan area of Caracas. A few months later, the first programs made by Televen appeared, such as Teledeportes with Max Lefeld, Marco Vinicio Lacavalerie and Alvis Cedeño; VH-10 with Marco Antonio Lacavalerie Jr. ("Musiuíto") and Fortuna 10 with Corina Azopardo. In addition, the first Brazilian soap opera is broadcast at 09:00 p.m. m., Girl Moza, 1986.

From 1988 to 2000, Televen had its headquarters in the Los Chaguaramos Shopping Center, located in the urbanization of the same name in Caracas.

On January 18, 1989, Omar Camero Zamora, president of the channel, requested a press conference to clarify that Televen had not been sold, but 33% of the company's shares had been purchased by a group of businessmen. judicially managed by Pedro Tinoco. In March of the same year, Televen's Vice President of Production, Jorge Font, announced the acquisition of the Cedros and Macaracuay theaters for the use of developing television studios carried out by the channel.

With the help of investors including personalities from the television industry in Venezuela such as Guillermo "Fantático" González in the 1990s, Televen expanded its coverage to the entire country, managing to attract a larger audience than the state-run Venezuelan Television Network.

On November 27, 1992, during the second coup attempt, Televen's signal was not taken over by the rebel troops, but other stations were taken over, making it the only channel to remain on the air during the coup attempt.. Televen was used by President Carlos Andrés Pérez to announce that the government had the situation under control.

On June 15, 1993, Televen put into service its largest antenna tower with a height of 150 m, 24 transmission panels and 30 kW of power, which allows its signal to reach all of Zulia.

In its beginnings, Televen had programming similar to that of subscription television channels, aimed at the middle class. The channel broadcast opinion programs, sports programs, movies, foreign series (mainly American) and Latin American soap operas, specifically from Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico.

Since October 28, 1993, Televen began broadcasting programming 24/7, being the first channel to achieve this goal. In 1997, the channel launched its own website: televen.com. In that same year, the website won the ANDA award in the category “New Advertising Technologies”.

Subsequently, Televen expanded its coverage to other areas of the country. 8 transmitters were acquired for cities such as Maturín, Valle de la Pascua, Mérida, Valencia and Puerto Cabello. In 1998, the channel began to transmit its signal through the Intelsat 806 satellite.

At the end of the decade, Televen began to broadcast animated series from Disney, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Warner Bros., Marvel, among others. It also broadcast some very successful anime series since the late 1990s, including the Knights of the Zodiac sagas, one of the first to broadcast, followed by Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Samurai X.

2000s

Starting in 2000, Televen moved its operations to the Horizonte industrial zone, on Avenida Rómulo Gallegos, where the old Savoy chocolate factory was located, built by Manuel Fuentes y Asociados under the supervision of architect Jorge Sánchez. Counting at that time with 30,000 m² of construction, where there were four studios, one for the press, two for variety, another giant, and an auditorium. The main building has five levels: 25,000 m², while an Annex Building with eight levels: 2,500 m². It remains the official headquarters of the channel to this day. For 2002, the channel based its programmatic strategy on placing national products in prime time and expanding its target audience to the ABCD social classes. In 2009, after achieving alliances with Caracol Televisión and RCN Televisión, Televen added soap operas produced by both networks with drug trafficking themes to its programming in prime time. Shortly after, these were taken off the air by CONATEL laws; Telemundo productions such as Caso Cerrado and La Reina del Sur are also taken off the air.

2010s

In 2012, Televen begins to make productions in high definition starting with Nacer Contigo, the first telenovela recorded by the channel in HD. In the same year, the alliance between Telemundo and RTI Televisión ends, after RTI made a deal with the Mexican company Televisa, where soap operas recorded in Venezuela would be broadcast on Televen, starting with Las Bandidas. In February of the same year, Televen signs a collaboration agreement with CadenaTres de México for the co-production of soap operas, where productions such as Dulce Amar in 2013 and Nora in 2014 would originate. In addition, the channel for the first time ventures into the co-production of unitaries such as Escándalos and Proof of Faith, or the series Tómame o déjame, recorded in the city of Miami, United States, together with independent producers.

In 2011, Televen broadcast the program Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, hosted by Eladio Lárez and produced by RCTV. It aired on Sundays at 09:00 p.m. m.. He also broadcast the humorous program Misión Emilio with Emilio Lovera.

2020s

In 2022, the return of sports broadcasts to the channel was announced, after acquiring the rights from FIFA to broadcast the World Cup in Qatar in April, which would begin with the U-20 Women's World Cup. On July 20, 2022, the sports space Teledeportes returns to the channel, after 2 decades of absence, to which the broadcasts of the Basketball Super League in July would later be added, the Big Baseball Leagues in August, and the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League in October.

On November 15, 2022, Televen launched its high definition signal through operators such as Inter, NetUno and CANTV Televisión Satelital, thus becoming the third open high definition channel in Venezuela.

In 2023, schedule changes arose in prime hours from 04:00 pm to 12:00 am and announced the premiere of the reality show called El hato that premiered in October of the same year and brand new programming.

On September 22, 2023, after an alliance with Seplex, its streaming platform called Televen Stream was launched, a platform that is the best of the channel's programming.

Televen America

After a strategic alliance with Olympusat, a streaming television corporation based in the United States with the Televen channel, they announced the export of their programming in high definition outside of Venezuela.

The official launch of Televen's international signal took place in December 2015. The programming of Televen América includes original content such as soap operas, series, variety programs and others that will be produced by the network in high definition in Venezuela. The signal is currently available on the VEMOX platform, for the Hispanic public in the United States.

Televen HD

On the occasion of the transmission of the 2022 Soccer World Cup, Televen launched its high definition signal for Venezuela on November 15, 2022 to transmit soccer matches in HD resolution through the subscription signal, while the Open television networks (TDA, VHF and UHF) with standard SD resolution would not transmit these matches.

Programming

Its programming consists mainly of Mexican soap operas from TV Azteca during the week, and Colombian soap operas from Caracol Televisión and RCN Televisión in the evening and prime time, morning magazines and variety programs, it also broadcasts children's and youth series at 03:00 p. m., comedy programs, newscasts in its three broadcasts in morning, midday and prime time, at night series and programs such as talk shows, on weekends it broadcasts movies, opinion spaces and game shows. Most of the broadcast spaces are made up of programs made on the channel. Currently, the channel is also broadcasting old soap operas from RCTV Producciones at 02:00 p.m., while starting in 2021 it will once again broadcast Brazilian Telenovelas from Rede Globo, Rede Manchete and SBT.

Televen managed, together with Venevisión, to acquire the exclusive broadcasting rights of national baseball games that previously belonged to RCTV. Incidents
