A tear tape is a plastic or cardboard tape that has the function of facilitating the opening of the package.

The tear tape is glued in a corrugator on the inside of a corrugated cardboard sheet that will form the packaging. For its use, a vertical cut is punched at the point of attack. It is used above all for consumer products: food, drugstore, perfumery, etc.

Among the advantages of the tear tape compared to other opening systems are the following:

  • It does not harm the resistance of the box by not implying cross-sectionals or holes in its structure.
  • It provides a uniform cut around the box so the manufacturer can display the messages in an exact location without any modifications.
  • Convert a conventional packaging into a tray with uniform height.
  • It provides a cleaner cut than conventional pre-cut systems.

For opening an American box, a single tear tape is placed around the box. However, to use it over a Wrap Around requires two tapes that are placed lengthwise on two alternating panels. Its position must be very precise because when forming the box they must be at the same height.

If the tape is inserted between a face paper and the wave, its function will be to reinforce a longitudinal section of the packaging that will act as a handle. It is used for the movement of heavy products carried by the consumer: bottles of oil or wine, detergents, etc.
