María Ángeles Maestro Martín (known as Nines Maestro) is a Spanish politician born on February 6, 1952 in Medina del Campo (Valladolid). She has a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Madrid.
Militant of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) since 1974, in 1979 she was elected councilor of Talavera de la Reina (Toledo), where she served in the first democratically elected municipal government after the death of Francisco Franco as Health delegate. In 1989 she was elected deputy in Congress for IU, being reelected in 1993 and 1996.
She was one of the founders of IU, being from the first moment a member of the Federal Political Council and of the Executive Presidency. Within it, she stood on its left wing, as a leader of tendencies such as Left Platform or Corriente Roja. In the PCE she was part of its Secretary of International Relations, the Federal Committee and the Executive Committee.
In November 1996, he was a member of the International Tribunal for Crimes Against Humanity Committed by the United Nations Security Council in Iraq, a civic initiative of intellectuals, politicians and legal professionals opposed to the tragic consequences of the embargo on the civilian population from the Mesopotamian country.
He ceased to be part of Izquierda Unida when Corriente Roja left the coalition in June 2004, rejoining his position as a doctor in the Madrid Health Service. He left the PCE after the XVII Congress in June 2005, after rejecting Corriente Roja's proposal that the PCE leave IU. Currently, after the Trotskyist PRT-IT took control of the acronym for Corriente Roja, turning it into the Spanish section of the LIT-CI, Maestro is the main leader of the Red Red organization, which aspires to recover the project Original from Corriente Roja with clearly communist political cadres.
Maestro has publicly shown on several occasions his closeness to the nationalist left, asking for a vote for the Communist Party of the Basque Country (EHAK) or participating in Batasuna events. In the 2009 European Parliament elections he was a candidate in the lists of Internationalist Initiative - Solidarity between Peoples.
In January 2019, she was investigated by the National Court for an alleged crime of financing terrorism. During the years 2014 and 2015 he made two collections to collect humanitarian aid in Palestine after the attacks by Israel. Said money was delivered to Leila Khaled, a militant of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, considered a terrorist organization by the United States, Canada, and the European Union.
