Târgu Jiu
Târgu Jiu (formerly Tîrgu Jiu, [ˌtɨrɡu ˈʒiw ]) is a city in Romania in the Gorj district, Oltenia. It is located on the east bank of the Jiu River, from which the name comes.
Name
The spelling reform of Romanian in 1953, during the communist era, eliminated the letter â from the Romanian alphabet, replacing it in all cases with î, of identical pronunciation, so the name of the city became Tîrgu Jiu. Due to this, in some books and maps in Spanish the city is found, with the name Tirgu Jiu.
In 1993, after the revolution that ended the regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu, the Romanian Academy carried out a new spelling reform, essentially reversing the 1953 reform. Since then, the name of the city has been Târgu Jiu.
