Tae bo is a series of exercise routines mainly associated with boxing, karate and taekwondo developed by the seven-time world karate champion in the full contact modality, medalist in the world sports karate games and amateur boxing champion (or golden gloves), practitioner of karate, and taekwondo, as well as an actor, the American Billy Blanks.

Tae bo, or (taekwondo + boxing, as its name implies) was developed since 1973, but became popular in 1990 by combining music, and martial arts techniques with training exercises, developing an intensive regimen of work, divided at various levels. Tae bo has become very popular, spreading throughout the world and selling millions of videos of it.

Before it became known, exercises that incorporated martial arts techniques done to the rhythm of music known as musical katas were already practiced; However, musical katas did not reach the popularity of tae-bo; On the other hand, musical katas were part of the exhibition routine of some Western martial artists, but they were not practiced (formally) independently of the rest of the activities corresponding to the martial art to which they were associated.[ citation required]

Tae bo includes many of the kicks of karate and taekwondo, as well as several of the strikes of Western boxing, but its practical purpose is not combat. In tae bo there are no throws, grabs or ground combat, but what is sought is the increase in health through movement.

In 1999 BodyCombat was invented as a development of fitness with punches and kicks.
