Taburiente is a musical group, belonging to the Nueva Canción Canaria, and from La Palma (Canary Islands).

History

Taburiente was formed in 1972 by the palmeros Luis Morera (voice and percussion), Miguel Pérez (vocals and guitars) and Manolo Pérez (voice, timple, guitars and keyboards) editing their first album the following year under the name La Contra (We are from the Canary Islands, 1973).

In 1976 they released Nuevo Cauce, produced by Teddy Bautista, where they fused Canarian folklore with protest songs and modern sounds (using synthesizers). His songs have a marked identity content, with social, environmental and Canarian nationalist demands. Already on this first album are some of the group's most classic songs such as Ganarse La Tierra, Guanche Christmas or Yo Poeta Declaro, a poem by Agustín Millares Sall to which Caco Senante put music.

In 1978 Ach-Guañac came to light, also produced by Teddy Bautista and with the collaboration of musicians belonging to Los Canarios and Coz. The album, with a sound closer to pop (although it does not abandon the elements of Canarian folklore) includes the homonymous song Ach-Guañac, considered a hymn for Canarian nationalism and independence.

During this time they will collaborate on records by other artists such as Rosa León or Caco Senante from Tenerife.

After the publication of these two albums, they became the main exponents of songwriting in the Canary Islands. His music will also be linked to the social movements that were taking place in the archipelago.

At the beginning of the 80s, some changes took place in the group, Manolo Pérez leaving and Luisa Machado (female vocals) and Alberto Méndez (electric bass) joining, giving the group a new sound. We do not find new recordings by Taburiente again until 1985, the year in which A Tara was released. From now on the group will focus on a more ecological and pacifist theme. The group's new sound, now without the excess of synthesizers it had in the 70s, will be characterized by the electric bass, which becomes a solo instrument, as well as by the influences of North African music. Along these lines, they released A la Quinta Verde in 1987, Atlántico in 1988 and Grandes Éxitos (with new versions and unpublished songs) in 1989; albums in which the pianist Enrique Guimerá will collaborate.

In 1991 Astral was published with much more electronic sounds and with the participation of Luis Fernández (Pedro Guerra's keyboardist).

From that moment on, their record production slowed down, although they continued to participate in albums by other artists. For his part, Luis Morera also works as a painter (he is the author of the covers of some of Taburiente's records), sculptor and architect.

Luisa Machado and Alberto Méndez leave the group to start their solo career. In 1995 they published A Tierra and in 1999 Under the skin of water. In these discs the personal theme has a greater force, appearing several love themes. Sounds such as Cuban music, jazz or reggae are used.

In 2004, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the formation of the group, they offer a symphonic concert at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium and record an album produced by Kike Perdomo in a studio where they cover some of their most classic songs adding a completely new character to these thanks to arrangements written by Carlos Puig.

For his part, Luis Morera has also recently released two solo albums (Desde dentro and Espacio Abierto) where, in addition to his own compositions, he performs songs by Luis Eduardo Aute, Alí Primera and bolero and ranchera classics such as the compositions of José Alfredo Jiménez.

In 2008 they released Libre, a new work that has a new line-up. The saxophonist from Tenerife Kike Perdomo becomes director of the band. The main voices and choirs continue to be by Luis Morera, Miguel Pérez and José Eduardo Martín; on drums, Alfredo Llanos; the percussion of Sergio García; the bass of Francisco López; Sergio Cebrián on guitar and Francis Hernández on piano. Eight original songs and two versions; The Castaway of the Sahara" by Javier Ruibal from Cádiz and a very personal version of the song Mararía from the soundtrack of the film of the same title (based on the novel by Rafael Arozarena) and composed by the author from Güimare, Pedro Guerra.
