Sweet bird of youth
Sweet Bird of Youth is a film based on the play of the same name, by Tennessee Williams.
Plot
Chance Wayne (Paul Newman) is a young man who returns to his hometown after a long absence, in which he has tried unsuccessfully to become a film actor. Along the way he has met Alexandra del Lago (Geraldine Page), an older actress, with whom he begins a relationship, hoping that she will help him get a role in a movie. They stay at the city hotel and Wayne, while still with Alexandra, goes in search of his old girlfriend Heavenly (Shirley Knight). Heavenly is the daughter of the main politician of the town, who in her day forced him to leave worried about the relations between him and his daughter.
Awards and nominations
The film won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Ed Begley's performance, and was nominated for two others: Best Lead Actress for Geraldine Page and Best Supporting Actress for Shirley Knight.
Remake on television
There is a television version of this argument, recorded in 1989 with the participation of Elizabeth Taylor.
