Facade of the Swedish Academy.

The Swedish Academy (Svenska Akademien in Swedish) was founded on March 20, 1786 by King Gustav III of Sweden, with the aim of promoting the use of the Swedish modeled after the French Academy (the same academy on which the Royal Spanish Academy is modeled). Consisting of 18 members, its functions were initially similar to its French counterpart.

Features

Their motto is “Talent and Taste” (“Snille och Smak” in Swedish). Its main objective is to serve "the purity, vigor and majesty" of the Swedish language. From this point of view he publishes three dictionaries:

  • Svenska Akademiens ordlistas (SAOL): a work in a single volume, the first edition in 1874, the last edition with 126 000 words published in 2015;
  • Svenska Akademiens ordbok (SAOB): a work published in several volumes since 1898 with more than 500 000 words (a-vret);
  • Svensk ordbok utgiven av Svenska Akademien (SO): a work published in two volumes in 2009 with 65 000 words with descriptions.

The three dictionaries are also on the Internet, www.svenska.se.

Every year the Swedish Academy designates the laureate as the Nobel Prize in Literature, one of the prizes established by Alfred Nobel in his will. The Academy meets in the Börshuset building it owns in the old city of Stockholm. It is here where the names of the winners of the different Nobel Prizes are announced every year.
