Sun station
Sol is a multimodal station located under the central Puerta del Sol in Madrid, in the neighborhood of the same name in the Centro district. Lines 1, 2 and 3 of the Madrid Metro and C-3, C-3a and C-4 of the Madrid Cercanías network come together at this station. Its fare zone is A according to the Regional Transport Consortium. The temple is the work of the architect Antonio Fernández Alba.
History
Subway
The platforms of line 1 came into operation in 1919 when the first section of the metro was inaugurated in the city between Sol and Cuatro Caminos.
The line 2 station was incorporated in 1924, standing above line 1 and perpendicular to them.
The line 3 station was incorporated in 1936, being more or less at the same level as line 1 and also perpendicular to line 2. It is important to note that the first stretch of the three lines inaugurated included the Sol station.
In the 1960s, the platforms of line 1 were extended from 60 to 90 m, work that could not be carried out on both platforms in parallel due to the buildings on the surface, since their foundations were in danger. This led to the expansion of one of the platforms to the north and another to the south, making it the only Madrid Metro station with non-parallel platforms.
Between 2004 and 2006, the platforms of line 3 were also extended from 60 to 90 m, but this time it was possible to carry out the work while remaining completely parallel. At that time, a new access was opened on Calle Preciados, which helps to better distribute the flow of passengers through the station. In parallel with this work, the installation of elevators began, of which those that allow access to the Lines 1, 2 and 3 and the one that gives access from the street to the lobby have been in operation since 2007, the last one that was missing (which gives access to platform 2 of line 1) being inaugurated in 2016, with the completion of works on the line carried out between July and November.
Currently, the station has four entrances, which, given the large influx of passengers, often causes crowds at the entrance and exit stairs. The interior stands out for its large central room with a decorated ceiling, where there are various shops and a police station.
Since July 3, 2016, the platforms of line 1 have been closed due to improvement works on the facilities of line 1 between the stations of Plaza de Castilla and Sierra de Guadalupe. The line was reopened on the 13th November 2016, although on September 14 the Plaza de Castilla-Cuatro Caminos and Alto del Arenal-Sierra de Guadalupe sections were reopened. And the opening of the Atocha Renfe-Alto del Arenal section was also brought forward.
In parallel to these works, they have carried out the necessary work to install the missing elevator in the station that connects with platform 2 of line 1. These works began in February 2016, to achieve full accessibility of the station. The elevator connects the main lobby with the aforementioned platform and its inauguration was in November 2016, coinciding with the end of the improvement works on line 1.
On April 1, 2017, the special hours for all lobbies that closed at 9:40 p.m. were eliminated, along with the absence of personnel in said lobbies.
Between April 24 and May 13, 2019, the platforms of Line 2 were closed to the public due to an incident on the line.
Sponsorships
On March 13, 2012, Metro de Madrid renamed the Sol station as “Sol Galaxy Note Station” due to a 1-month sponsorship contract from the Samsung company for this mobile device. This is a pilot test for the sale of naming rights (naming rights) for the financing of public transport. Between June 1, 2013 and June 1, 2016, by For reasons of sponsorship, the Metro station became known as "Vodafone Sol". The telephone company disbursed 3 million euros for the controversial agreement, at a rate of one million per year.
Commuters
In 2004, expansion works began to convert the station into an interchange with connection to the Madrid Cercanías network, by digging a second Tunnel of Laughter (Atocha-Chamartín) alternative to the current one. The tunnel has been open to the public since July 9, 2008 and the station since June 27, 2009.
The works suffered a 6-month stoppage in 2006 due to the discovery of archaeological remains, for which reason the work on the station was considerably delayed with respect to the whole of the tunnel. The commuter station has been built in a grotto with a very high vault and at the eastern end of the Puerta del Sol an emptying has been carried out to make a new access hall. From June 25 to July 23, 2008, line 2 was cut, as well as from August to September 4, 2008, line 1 was cut to allow the completion of the underground connection with Cercanías.
On July 16, 2021, the new corridor and exit to the Gran Vía station were opened, which made it possible to link metro line 5 with the Cercanías de Sol station, becoming the Cercanías station where more lines of subway connect.
