Succubus
The succubi or Angels (from the Latin succŭbus, from succubare, «to rest below»), according to western medieval legends, are some demons that take the form of attractive women to seduce men or women, especially adolescents and monks, entering their dreams and fantasies. In general they are women of great sensuality and extreme incandescent beauty. The myth of the succubi could have arisen as an explanation for the phenomenon of wet dreams and sleep paralysis. According to other perspectives, clear supernatural visitation experiences can occur at night in the form of hypnagogic hallucination. In the 16th century, a carving or sculpture of a succubus outside an inn indicated that it also functioned as a brothel.
Etymology
The word «succubus» comes from an alteration of the word succuba; The word itself derives from the prefix sub-, which means 'under', and from the verb cubo, cubare, which means "to lie". Thus, a succubus is someone who lies under another person, while an incubus (Latin in-, prefix meaning "on top of") is someone who lies under another person. on top of another person.
Appearance
Succubi vary in appearance, generally as black-haired or red-haired women. However, they are almost universally painted as seductive women in the nude or in skimpy, revealing clothing, with an unearthly beauty, often with demonic wings. From time to time, they are given other demonic traits, such as horns, a tail with a triangular tip, snake eyes, fangs, snakes coiled around their body, etc. Often they simply appear in dreams as an attractive, naked woman who the victim cannot get rid of or forget, even after waking up.
Motivations
The most widespread mythical version is that the succubi attack their victims to absorb the blood or vital energy of the man and thus feed themselves, unlike the incubi, which sexually attack their victim and usually appear when they are about to lose her virginity, according to Western popular culture. Likewise, the succubi can affect the person while they sleep, changing and transforming their appearance from one woman to another in many cases.
