Strategy game
Strategy games are those games or entertainment in which the factor of intelligence, technical skills, planning and deployment, can make the player prevail or drive towards victory in the game.
The players can play the role of a businessman, a head of state, a general, or any other character, in which they will have to develop a series of strategies, managing the resources available, to win a battle, get money or points, a certain position, etc., and thus get
Classification
Strategy games can be classified in multiple ways:
- According to the structure of the game:
- Pure or dependent strategy to some degree of chance.
- Math resolution.
- Number of players: one, two or more.
- Individual or cooperative.
- Balance management/combate:
- Strategic: emphasis is placed on resource management, diplomacy and research (e.g., Diplomacy and Civilization)
- Tactics: focuses on combat.
- Operational: Intermediate between the previous ones.
- According to the elements used: cards, miniatures, boards, tab, video games.
- According to the theme:
- Abstracts.
- Thematics. In this category there are countless subgeners, such as: military, business, government, professions, fantastic, space, etc.
Military
These games are complex and often depict wars or military battles. Generally, cards and miniatures are used representing the different military grades, regiments or armaments. Tables are also often used in which the values of each combat unit are represented. There are many games of this kind, but the best known are Empire Strike, Tactics, Squad Leader, Panzerblitz or Waterloo 1815.
Miniature game
They are board games in which miniatures are used, but not on a board but on a model or diorama.
Cards
In a card game we must generally look for a successful combination of cards that can beat our opponent's.
In addition to traditional card games such as poker, mus, bridge or tute, there are games with other types of cards such as UNO, cheat or Nabuko Generals and Conquerors, which combines strategy in the use of cards with the learning of universal history, collectible card games, such as the famous Magic, and even board games that are based on cards, such as Twilight Struggle.
Board and tiles
They are those in which the game takes place on a board, generally with geometric positions, in which the chips of each player are distributed. The oldest examples are checkers, backgammon, dominoes, chess, go and ludo in all its varieties.
Modern examples are Monopoly, Scrabble, Reversi or Core.
Video games
There are many types of strategy video games and a multitude of themes. They can be in real time or in turns.
- Within real-time genre some of the most successful games have been Grepolis, Dune 2, Command " Conquer ", Ancient Art of War, Age of Empires, Starcraft and Warcraft.
- On the side of games per turn, among the best known are classics Civilization, Total War, Heroes of Might and Magic and its aftermath, as well as other empire-building games.
- At present there are games that combine the two forms being called big strategy games, among which stand out Universal Europe 4, Crusader Kings 2, Victoria 2 or Hegemony,
Acting or role playing
They are all those games in which the participants are forced to carry out certain actions, such as mime, drawing, lip reading, imitation of an animal, etc. The game Enredos (Twister according to the title of the original English version) belongs, for example, to this category of games, in which the players must place themselves on a large quadrangular board and place their hands and feet in the places on the board indicated by the rules throughout the course of a game.
