STOVL (from Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing, "short takeoff and vertical landing") is the ability of some aircraft to take off from a short or unprepared runway and land vertically. The most popular aircraft is probably the Hawker Siddeley Harrier, which was thought and designed to be a VTOL aircraft, although its characteristics are currently STOVL due to the greater fuel and weapons capacities it now has. The same is true for the future F-35 Lightning II in its F-35B variant, which has already demonstrated its VTOL capabilities in prototype tests and is currently considered a STOVL aircraft.
