Stockholm County
The Stockholm Province (Swedish: 'Stockholms län') is one of the 21 administrative provinces (Swedish, län) that make up Sweden. It comprises parts of the former historical provinces or counties of Uppland and Södermanland.
The province is located on the shores of the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälar, bordering the province of Uppsala (Uppsala län) and the province of Södermanland (Södermanlands län).
The province has a civil government, or länsstyrelse, which is headed by a government-appointed governor. It also has a provincial council or landsting, which is the municipal representation appointed by the province's electorate.
History
Stockholm County was created in 1714. The City of Stockholm then formed its own administrative entity under the Governor of Stockholm and was not part of Stockholm County. Although it was outside of Stockholm County, the city of Stockholm was its headquarters.
On January 1, 1968, Stockholm County was merged into the City of Stockholm. At the same time, the borders were also redrawed in other directions; the municipality of Upplands-Bro was transferred from Uppsala county and a large part of the present Östhammar municipality was transferred to Uppsala county.
Economy
The region's gross domestic product (GDP) was €145.6 billion in 2018, representing 30.9% of Swedish economic output. GDP per capita adjusted for purchasing power was 49,500 euros, that is, 164% of the EU27 average in the same year. GDP per employee was 132% of the EU average.
Heraldry
The coat of arms of Stockholm County is a combination of the arms of Uppland, Södermanland and the city of Stockholm. When shown wearing a royal crown, it represents the County Administrative Board.
