Beginnings

To respect the Jewish rule against naming children after their father, his mother names him Steven, and later takes the last name of his mother's new husband, Melvin Adler. He has an older brother, Kenny, and a younger sister, Jamie.Steven Adler grew up in the San Fernando Valley until the age of 13. He later lives with his grandparents in Hollywood. He meets the future lead guitarist for Guns N & # 39; Roses, Slash, at Bancroft Junior High. This happened one afternoon when Steven was riding a skateboard and after a fall, Slash approached him on his bike to see if he was okay. That same day —according to Slash in an interview— Steven showed him some chords on his old guitar and awakened Slash's love for the guitar.

Guns N' Roses

Together they formed a band called Road Crew, and when it broke up, Adler and Slash were called to join Guns N' Roses, as Tracii Guns and Rob Gardner went on to L.A. Guns. Steven Adler played drums on the albums Appetite for Destruction, G N' R Lies and on a mini LP on his own UZI Suicide record label, titled Live?!*@ Like a Suicide.

Drug problems within the gang worsened. Steven is unable to play the drums during rehearsals due to his strong addictions to heroin and cocaine. Despite being warned by his colleagues to stop his addiction, Steven continues to take drugs, which was the reason for his expulsion from the group in 1990. He was replaced by Matt Sorum, drummer who had also collaborated with The Cult. Adler continued to use drugs until he suffered a heart attack (which left scars in his speech) after using speedball.

In October 1991, Steven sued the band, arguing that he was not the only one who was taking drugs at the time he had been expelled and that the rest of the members were doing it too. He also claimed that he was one of the owners of the Guns N' Roses name, for which he was entitled to entry rights. A year later Steven wins the trial, whereupon the judge dictates that each member pay him a sum of money. Said sum would reach a total amount of two and a half million dollars. With this Steven would be totally out of the group.

Adler's Appetite

After nearly two decades of battling his heroin addiction, he formed the band Adler's Appetite. Later he wrote an autobiographical book with the help of his mother, which is called My Appetite for Destruction: Sex, and Drugs, and Guns N & # 39; Roses. The book was released on July 27, 2010.
