Stephen VII

Stephen VII or VIII. (* Rome, (?) – † February 931). Pope No. 124 of the Catholic Church from 928 to 931.

Named Esteban Gabrielli (Stephanus de Gabriellibus), he was chosen like his predecessors thanks to the influence of Marozia and his family when he held the ecclesiastical dignity of Cardinal. His pontificate did not record events of importance. In the last years of his pontificate, Pope John X had incurred the wrath of Marozia, the Donna Senatrix and he was imprisoned and assassinated. Marozia then conferred the papacy on Pope Leo VI, who died six and a half months later in his post. He was succeeded by Stephen VII, probably through Marozia's influence. During his two years as pope he was powerless as Marozia dominated him.

He was assassinated in February 931.
