Stephen Reeder Donaldson (Cleveland, May 13, 1947) is an American science fiction and epic fantasy writer.

Biography

He was born in Cleveland, the son of James R. Donaldson, a missionary physician, and Mary Ruth Reeder, a specialist in prosthetics. From the age of three to sixteen he lived in India, where his father was in charge of treating lepers. Donaldson received his Master of Arts degree in English from Kent State University in 1971.

He has often been compared to J. R. R. Tolkien for his magnificent world and culture building, as well as his splendid staging of battles and wonders. On the other hand, influences from William Shakespeare, Mervyn Peake and the operas of Richard Wagner are indicated. Both the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever and Mordant's Necessity make use of the “other world” paradigm already used by C.S. Lewis.

His series The Gap Cycle, not yet translated into Spanish, is Donaldson's ambitious foray into the science fiction genre. As in The Thomas Covenant Chronicles, the author shows human weakness and cruelty in situations of survival and brutality.
