Stenotaphrum is a genus of herbaceous plants in the grass family or poaceae. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the globe. It comprises 13 described species and of these, only 7 accepted.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Carl Bernhard von Trinius and published in Fundamenta Agrostographiae 175. 1820[1822]. The type species is: Stenotaphrum glabrum Trin.

Etymology

The name of the genus derives from the Greek words stenos (narrow) and taphros (trench, hollow), alluding to the cavities of the rachis.

Cytology

It has somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 18, 20, and 36. 2 and 4 ploids.
