Stefan Edberg
Stefan Edberg (Västervik, January 19, 1966) is a Swedish tennis player. During the early 1990s he was ranked number 1 in the ATP ranking for 72 weeks.
He won six Grand Slam singles titles: the Wimbledon Championships 1988 and 1990, the US Open 1991 and 1992, and the Australian Open 1985 and 1987. He also reached a total of 11 finals, one of them in the Roland Garros tournament, and 19 semifinals.
The Swede triumphed at the 1989 Masters Grand Prix and captured eight Grand Prix Championship / ATP Masters Series titles on all surfaces. In addition, he won the individual gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and bronze at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
In doubles, Edberg won the 1987 US Open, the 1987 and 1996 Australian Open, and the 1993 Monte Carlo Masters, and was a finalist at the 1984 US Open, the Roland Garros Open in 1986 and the 1993 Cincinnati Masters.
He is the representative who has played the most times for Sweden in the Davis Cup with 70 appearances in 13 editions, from 1984 to 1996 without interruption. Furthermore, he holds the record in his country of seven finals played, having won the event four times in 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1994.
Other credits include being the only junior tennis player to win the Golden Slam (all four major tournaments in the same year) and being the player with the 5th most matches played (1,079) in the professional era, behind Jimmy Connors (1491), Ivan Lendl (1308), Guillermo Vilas (1201), Andre Agassi (1144).
He received the Honor Award for Sportsmanship in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1995, more than any other player in history. In 1996 the ATP decided to rename this award the Edberg Sportsmanship Award. On July 11, 2004, he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
His game was spectacular at the net, it could be said that he was one of the best volleyers in the history of this sport. He was world No. 1 in juniors in 1983, making him one of 5 tennis players to reach No. 1 in both pros and juniors. Along with John McEnroe, he is the only two players in all of history to reach the top in singles and doubles. He was characterized as a cold player and very sure of himself.
His greatest rivalry during his professional career was with the German Boris Becker, they met 35 times with a record in favor of Becker 25-10.
Career as a coach
Edberg signed a contract to become Roger Federer's coach at the end of 2013. Their collaboration officially began at the 2014 Australian Open. [1] Federer described Edberg's role as "as a mentor rather than a coach" However, his influence has been seen as a mainstay in the Swiss champion's revival, especially in bringing serve and volley play and play near the net to his game. Their collaboration ended in December 2015.
