Star Wars: Dark Forces was the first FPS based on the Star Wars universe and one of the first video games to be released in CD-ROM format, due to its considerable size for the time (mostly due to the video sequences it included).

Plot

The protagonist of the game is a mercenary named Kyle Katarn, who works for the Rebel Alliance. In the first mission he has to steal the plans for the Death Star, but later on the plot deviates from the movies, leading the protagonist to face the mysterious Dark Forces of the Galactic Empire.

The aftermath of the Dark Forces saga leads the protagonist to become a Jedi Knight.

Technical data sheet

The environment in which the action takes place is completely 3D, but without fully exploring this feature. Although the graphics are sprite-based, some elements, like the laser cannons, for example, are rendered entirely in 3D.

There are 10 different types of weapons available, some of them with 2 firing modes.

Although the game featured low-resolution graphics (320x200), the finish of the textures, the detail of the maps, and the realism of some details (eg, breakable set elements) provided many players of the game with time a very immersive experience in the world of Star Wars.

The most notable flaw in the game was possibly the lack of artificial intelligence displayed by the enemies, whose behavior seemed to be reduced to approaching the protagonist and shooting him in the open.

It should also be noted that Dark Forces stopped working in versions after Windows 98. To be able to enjoy it in later operating systems, it is advisable to use an MS-DOS emulator, such as DOSBox. This is the way it is distributed by specialized online video game stores, such as Steam or Good Old Games.
