Star gate
Stargate, which means Gateway to the Stars or Stargate, is a science fiction franchise born in 1994 by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich with Stargate, Puerta a las Estrellas. It is made up of the novel Stargate by Dean Devlin and its film version adapted and brought to the big screen in 1994 by Roland Emmerich and other novels, three television series (Stargate SG-1 Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe) and a cartoon series (Stargate Infinity) that is not considered canon.
The Stargate universe has plenty of references to ancient mythology. In fact, the approach is based on the fact that these mythological beliefs were founded around the arrival of some extraterrestrial beings who assumed the role of ancient divinities. The most important are Egyptian, Hindu, Scandinavian and Greek, although new mythologies, such as the Mayan, Japanese, Celtic or even elements of good and evil (heaven and hell) from monotheistic religions have become more important in recent years. seasons of the series.
In 2008, two films (Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: The Continuum) were released on DVD, ending the plot of the Stargate series. SG-1.
Movies
Stargate, Gate to the Stars
In 1994 the original Stargate film was released. It was intended as the first of a trilogy, but the creators, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, focused more on developing other projects like Independence Day or Godzilla and the idea fell into disuse. oblivion. For Devlin, the series is not a problem for him, since he does not consider it a valid continuation of the film. In 2006, Devlin announced that he would find it interesting to revisit the possibility of closing the trilogy.
The plot of the film begins in 1928, when Professor Langford discovers in Giza (Egypt) a strange ring-shaped metal artifact (the Stargate). Years later, in 1994, Dr. Jackson (James Spader), a linguist known for his peculiar theories about the origin of hieroglyphic writing, is visited by Dr. Langford, who offers him a job: to translate some tablets from Ancient Egypt.
Dr. Jackson has to travel to a military facility in Montaña Creek, Colorado, where he identifies the symbols that he had to translate as constellations that mark a point in the Universe. This serves to activate the Stargate, which he crosses with a group of soldiers led by Colonel O'Neil, played by Kurt Russell (in the film, the character's last name is O'Neil, with an L, while which in the TV series is written with two L's, as Richard Dean Anderson points out in various chapters).
On the other side, they find a desert world where populations of primitive humans mine minerals for their god Ra, living as slaves.
As they explore further, Jackson realizes that the town is forbidden to read and write, later meeting Sha'uri (Mili Avital, the character takes the name Sha're -Vaitiare Bandera- in the television series), a young woman with whom he would fall in love.
Meanwhile, the rest of the team, who stayed near the Stargate, are defeated and imprisoned by some strange alien warriors.
Jackson, in the company of Sha'uri, discovers some hieroglyphs that when translated discovers that the inhabitants of the planet have been enslaved by Ra, an alien who to survive took over a human body and who has also conquered several planets in his wake.
Jackson and O'Neil, along with two soldiers, return to the temple where the Stargate was located, where they are captured and brought before Ra, who reveals to know the weapon O'Neil was hiding: a nuclear bomb..
After many vicissitudes, Jackson and O'Neil, with the support of some young natives of that planet, manage to free the planet from Ra's oppression, defeating his guards and killing him with the nuclear bomb.
Stargate: The Ark of Truth
Stargate: The Ark of Truth is a DVD movie written and directed by Robert C. Cooper. The film puts an end to the plot of the Ori from Stargate SG-1. El Arca de la Verdad was released for sale in the US on March 11, 2008. On October 7, 2009, the film was released for Latin America by Cinecanal.
The film is about SG-1's attempt to retrieve the "Ark of Truth," an Alteran (Ancient) device designed to reveal the truth to those who look into it.
Stargate: The Continuum
Stargate: Continuum (Stargate: The Continuum or Stargate: Infinite Time) is a DVD film written by Brad Wright and directed by Martin Wood. It is the second sequel film to Stargate SG-1, after Stargate: The Ark of Truth, and marks the end of the Goa'uld storyline.
The story begins with SG-1, alongside General O'Neill, witnessing the extraction ceremony of the last of the Goa'uld System Lords, Ba'al. But before being removed, Ba'al declares to the team that he is not the last one and that the real Ba'al is still free. He appears in the past, in 1939, on a ship called Achilles, and kills the crew, later diverting the ship's course and leaving a bomb. Thus history is modified, and the remaining members of SG-1 must restore it.
Series
Stargate SG-1
Stargate SG-1 premiered in the United States on July 27, 1997 on Showtime. After five seasons, it was switched to the Sci fi channel. Created by Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright, it initially stars Richard Dean Anderson (O'Neill), Michael Shanks (Dr Jackson), Amanda Tapping (Samantha Carter), Christopher Judge (Teal'c) and Don S. Davis (George Hammond).
The cast remained stable for most of the series, but there were a few changes:
- Michael Shanks was replaced by Corin Nemec (on the role of Jonas Quinn) during the sixth season. He came back in 7th. The reason was that Shanks did not agree with the little importance given to his character.
- Don S. Davis left the series for health problems, and R. D. Anderson relieved him as military commander of the Stargate Command (SGC).
- In the ninth season, R.D. Anderson left the series, which incorporated Beau Bridges as military chief and Ben Browder as the new leader of the SG-1.
- After appearing in eight episodes during the ninth season, Claudia Black joined the cast of the tenth season.
The series begins in 1998, but within the story it is set chronologically as if only a year had passed since the first mission in Abydos. The facilities where the Gate to the Stars is located are being dismantled and the gate itself will soon be stored in storage. At one point, the door is activated and some strange beings kidnap a military woman. General Hammond (Don S. Davis), in charge of the facilities, calls Colonel Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) and they contact Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) who is living in Abydos despite being presumed dead. Along with Captain Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) they discover that the Stargate is part of a vast network of gates that span the entire galaxy. When making the second expeditionary trip to Abydos (which is where the series begins) SG1 is captured by the goa'ulds, a species of snake-like parasites that invade the human body to survive by taking control of the person. The Goa'uld pretend to be gods in order to subdue the peoples they conquer using their advanced technology. The primate of the goa'uld "Apophis" (Peter Williams (actor)) is the character of Teal'c (Christopher Judge), who is the commander of the Jaffa (elite slaves of the Goauld's who carry immature embryos in their abdomens). He is convinced by Colonel Jack O'Neill to betray Apophis and helps SG1 escape. Teal'c will join the SG1 expedition team in the upcoming missions vowing to free his people from the hands of the Goa'ulds. With 10 seasons, it is considered one of the longest series in its genre. From the 7th season the events take place in parallel with the spin-off Stargate Atlantis.
On August 21, 2006, the Sci Fi Channel announced that it would not renew a new season, leaving the series' continuity up in the air. However, MGM reached an agreement to produce two direct-to-DVD films.. The first is entitled Stargate: The Ark of Truth (Stargate: the ark of truth ), which ends the plot of the Ori. The second film, Stargate: The Continuum, ends the Goa'uld arc. This film, unlike The Ark of Truth, features the appearance of R. D. Anderson and Don S. Davis, who were no longer part of the cast.
Stargate Atlantis
Stargate Atlantis premiered on the Sci-Fi Channel on July 16, 2004, starring Joe Flanigan, Torri Higginson, Rainbow Sun Francks, David Hewlett, and Rachel Luttrell. The series wrapped up its second season, with the addition of Paul McGillion and Jason Momoa (replacing Franks, who guest-starred for a time and then disappeared from the series) as the leads.
The story of the series begins at the end of the seventh season and the beginning of the eighth season of Stargate SG-1. A group of scientists, including Dr. Daniel Jackson, Dr. Elizabeth Weir, and Dr. Rodney McKay, are studying the Ancient outpost that O'Neill discovered at the end of season seven. Dr. Jackson manages to find out what happened to Atlantis: the Ancients took it to another galaxy, Pegasus, and he has the address where they went. The problem is that opening the Stargate to another galaxy spends a lot of energy, so it is possible that it will be a trip of no return. However, a scientific-military expedition, the Atlantis Expedition, led by Weir herself, decides to embark on the adventure and leaves for the Lost City of the Ancients, Atlantis. Once there, they will find an enemy far worse than the Goaul'd; the Wraith (Spectres), a race that feeds on the vital energy of humans and that, 10,000 years ago, forced the Ancients to leave Pegasus and return to Earth.
The Atlantis Expedition is headed by Dr. Elizabeth Weir, a specialist in diplomatic relations whose political skills have to live with the strong character of the expedition's military chief, John Sheppard, an experienced and courageous pilot who doesn't like him too much. The authority. Joining them are Lieutenant Aiden Ford, an enthusiastic young officer who becomes Sheppard's right-hand man, and Dr. Rodney Mckay, an intelligent astrophysicist with extensive experience in Stargate missions. In addition, the team has the collaboration of a native of the Pegasus galaxy, Athosiana Teyla, the young leader of a primitive community with which the Atlantis expedition allies to fight the Wraith and with the help of Ronon, one of the survivors of a city destroyed by the Wraith, which he follows for having information about Ford on a planet.
Stargate Infinity
Stargate Infinity is an animated series that aired between September 2002 and June 2003. Although the series was produced by MGM in conjunction with DiC Entertainment, none of the writers or producers of Stargate SG-1 or other projects based on Stargate were involved with Infinity. According to SG-1 creator Brad Wright, the animated series should not be considered within the official Stargate canon.
Set some 30 or 40 years in the future, Infinity tells the story of a team of young recruits led by a veteran member of Stargate Command who are framed for a crime they didn't commit. The team must travel from one planet to another trying to find a way to clear their name.
Stargate Universe
Stargate Universe is a series in the Stargate saga released in autumn 2009. The plot revolves around the survival of a group of scientists and soldiers from Stargate Command who end up adrift on the ship Destiny, of the Ancients, due to the use of the ninth Chevron. The first season has been a failure for many of its fans, losing Stargate its adventurous and exploring essence, the creators wanted to give it an approach more similar to Battlestar Galactica. In the technical aspects of the series, it is shot to look like someone documents everything that happens in Destiny, they are moved shots, that is, there is no fixed camera at any time. In addition, there was a stoppage of the series due to a writers' strike, resuming in April 2010.
The second season began in October 2010, it had a total of 20 episodes like the previous season, but it was canceled after the latter.

Books
Several books, novels, and comics have been written within the Stargate franchise.
Novels based on the movie Stargate
The novelization of the film was written in 1994 by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the original creators of the film. Subsequently, writer Bill McCay, based on Roland Emmerich's notes, continued the series with five more novels. - Stargate (1994, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin)
- Stargate: Rebellion (1995, Bill McCay)
- When the team of scientists and soldiers entered the Stargate, the last idea they had in their minds was to lead an armed rebellion on a planet a million light years from Earth. When it begins, no one can ignore the command of Jack O'Neill, an Egyptian renegade Daniel Jackson, and most of the newly liberated villages of Abydos, but both the U.S. Army and the successor of Ra, Hathor, have other ideas for the Stargate. Incredible to refuse a request for help, Colonel Jack O'Neill, Daniel Jackson and the people of the planet Abydos start a desperate search for freedom to a million light years on planet Earth.
- Stargate: Retaliation (1996, Bill McCay)
- Goddess Hathor attacks the heart of the Abydonian revolution when Daniel Jackson is accused of betraying his wife and rebellion.
- Stargate: Retribution (1997, Bill McCay)

- Stargate: Resistance (1999, Bill McCay)
- Egyptian Daniel Jackson, Colonel Jack O'Neill, and the survivors of planet Abydos have found refuge on a seemingly peaceful planet. But cat-shaped creatures living there (actually, the servants of an older breed of beings) become a threat that could destroy them all. In addition, the Stargate is buried and broken, without repair.

Mods
There are many modifications of games that recreate the atmosphere of Stargate, available on the net:
- The first is the graphical adventure created by Sektor 13 using the "Adventure Game Studio" program and using the SCUMM system and 2D graphics in a low resolution.
- Another alternative uses the Activision game, Star Trek: Armada II including ships from both series (it is a strategy game similar to Age of Empires).
- The third and most popular is Stargate Pack for Bridge Commander, which uses the Activision game, Star Trek: Bridge Commander, first-person game that allows the user to captain a starship. The modifications of this game include spacecraft. Developed by an American amateur programmer, it is the most complete game in terms of ships. So far there have been two deliveries (Pack 1 and Pack 2) but at the end of June the third delivery was announced, which includes all the ships and stations (including stargates, mid-way station and Atlantis City) that have been seen in the two shows (Atlantis and SG-1), less the Wraith ships that will be presented in a separate package in a time not confirmed yet.
- Another mod that has great expectation is the Stargate: The Last Stand, which is a modification of the famous game Half-Life 2- The date of departure of the first public version was 20/01/2009.
- You can also find a StarGate mod for Star Wars: Empire At war where they convert all the units of the game into StarGate with great details and fidelity to the series plus several new maps, some of which pose important challenges, such as destroying the enemy player and simultaneously entire fleets of Replicants or Wraith
- In the Space Empires saga (4 and 5) there are mods with modifications of ships, and even with soundtrack and other aspects of the saga.
- In the strategy game Sins of a Solar Empire, we find the mod "Stargate Invasion", for expansions, but not for the original version.
- Another mod was created for the game Homeworld 2 "Stargate Space Conflict." A new version of the same mod is currently being worked for Homeworld Remastered Collection (the old one is still available with the "Classic" coletilla), for now only one demo has been released.
- There is also a great mod for the Game [Garrysmod] called "Stargate Carter Addon Pack" It is updated regularly and we can play on different servers and game modes. Combined with the game that is a great sandbox of other mods you can experience stargate like never before.
- And recently (2015) there has been another great mod for the game [SpaceEngineers] called "Stargate" It is also regularly updated and we can play on different servers, it is fascinating realemte experimenttr with space and stragates.
