Star Fox
Star Fox (スターフォックス , Sutā Fokkusu?) is a video game that was released in 1993 for Super Nintendo and started the saga of the same name. The game was published as Starwing in Europe. It is characterized by being one of the best in the spaceship shooting genre, it showed three-dimensional graphics thanks to a special chip called Super FX included in the game cartridge, going on to sell 4 million copies worldwide. It was programmed by the English team Argonaut Software for Nintendo.
Gameplay
Star Fox is a shooter in a 3D perspective in third person and first person. The player must control Fox's spaceship, called the Arwing, through various environments while various enemies (spaceships, robots, creatures, etc.) attack them. Along the way, various power-ups are placed on the stage to help the player. The player receives a score at the end of each level based on how many enemies have been destroyed and how well they have defended their teammates. At the end of each level there is a boss that the player must defeat before moving on to the next level.
Star Fox has certain unique elements that differentiate it from the standard scrolling shooter. Most scrolling shooters force the player to move forward at a constant speed. While this is also true for Star Fox, there are boosters and retrorockets on the Arwing that allow the player to temporarily accelerate and decelerate. These can be used to maneuver around enemy attacks and other obstacles.
The damage model is another difference. In the standard scrolling shooter, touching almost any object results in the immediate destruction of the player's ship. In Star Fox, the Arwing has a certain amount of shield energy that represents the amount of damage it can absorb before destroying the ship. The game also has a small degree of location damage detection: if the ship's wings hit obstacles or the ground too much, they will break, negatively affecting the ship's handling and removing the ability to upgrade weapons.. Game display screen: Clockwise from left to right, the interface displays the number of lives, ammunition, boost meter and shield strength of the player. The difficulty in Star Fox is also set in a unique way. Most scrolling shooters, if they have selectable difficulty levels, allow the player to set the difficulty by choosing an option (e.g., "Easy", " Normal' and 'Hard') at the beginning of the game. This option usually affects variables such as the number of lives a player has, the number of enemies encountered in the game, the speed of enemies, etc. In contrast, at the beginning of Star Fox the player has the option to choose one of three routes to traverse the Lylat system. Each of these routes corresponds to a certain level of difficulty, but each route has its own set of unique levels. This gives Star Fox a little more replay value than other scrolling shooters that have a fixed series of levels each time you play. play the game. All three game routes contain the planet Corneria (the first level) and Venom (the last level), but each has different versions depending on the route taken.
In each level, the player is accompanied by three computer-controlled Arwings: Peppy Hare Slippy Toad and Falco Lombardi. At certain pre-written points, one of them will fly into the player's view, often chasing an enemy or being chased and calling for help. Ignoring a teammate's pleas will result in him taking damage, or even being knocked down. They cannot be damaged by the player's own lasers (although they will complain if they are hit). Regardless of their survival, the other pilots are not present during the boss battles, but join the player before the next stage. A player may choose to help his teammates when they ask for help, as doing so will allow them to confront some of the enemies not destroyed by the player, which will help the player succeed and also make it easier to achieve the maximum score in a given level. Additional points are also awarded at the end of each level, depending on the health of each companion. If a fellow pilot is shot down, he will not appear in the game again.
Characters
In the games there always appear (usually) all the members of the Star Fox team, who are:
- Fox McCloud: the team leader and protagonist of the story. He is 26 years old and is the son of James McCloud, the original leader and founder of the team.
- Falco Lombardi: it is next to Fox, the best driver of the Star Fox, sometimes rivals Fox, but deep down they are great friends.
- Peppy Hare: the oldest member of the team. He, along with Fox's father, founded the team. He's currently retired.
- Slippy Toad: Currently it is the "genio" of the team. Now, in current games, it designs, builds and sustains the ships and devices of the team. Although sometimes panic invades him, he is always told of the rice of his companions and overcomes any situation. Previously on Star Fox by Super Nintendo, Slippy was a pilot who had more difficulty than his companions, but who has now come forward as an inventor, this thanks to the support of Fox McCloud and the team.
Vehicles
The team has 4 main vehicles and a mother ship (these do not appear in the Super Nintendo game, it is merely informative):
- Great Fox. The team's mothership, where the vehicles are transported and is the team's operating base when they are in space.
- The Arwing is the team's main ship, it's a powerful and fast ship. It's got simple, but effective weapons.
- The Landmaster, which is used by land. Although it's slow, it's very powerful and its armament is too. It is used in places where the terrain is somewhat irregular, or where conditions prevent the use of the Arwings.
- The Blue Marine, used at sea. It has a strong weapon and is used in submarine works.
Antagonists
They are the enemies or opponents in the Star Fox saga.
- Andross. He is a scientist who, by his experiments and tests, put Corneria's safety at risk, was banished to the desert planet Venom. He's Star Fox's main enemy.
- Star Wolf. It is a team of mercenaries similar to Star Fox and also counterpart of that team. His leader, Wolf O' Donnell, fights with Fox with Wolfen, his main ship.
