Spinal Tap

Spın̈al Tap is a semi-fictional heavy metal band created in 1984 from the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, considered by many to be a cult film. The group exists both in fiction, in which its members are the characters played by the actors in the film, and in reality. The actors have recorded albums as the eponymous band. They also make appearances on The Simpsons episode called The Otto Show and on Homer's Barbershop Quartet at the ceremony cocktail.

The name of the group is officially written with an umlaut over the letter n to satirize the use of the umlaut in other groups such as Motörhead known in these cases by their German name umlaut (heavy metal umlaut). Apparently, they were based on the letter ñ, and therefore ended up adding the umlaut to the letter 'n'.

In 1992, they performed at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, lead singer of the group Queen.
