Snowball (The Simpsons)
Snowball I, Snowball II, Snowball III, Coltrane and Snowball V (Snowball) are five fictional cats that have belonged to Lisa Simpson in the television series The Simpsons. The differences between them are:
- Snowball I, a white female cat who died before the start of the series, but has been referred to several times. At Lisa's Sax, she shows up and knows they had it when Lisa was 3 and Bart 5.
- Snowball II, a black female cat who belonged to the family from the first episode to her death in episode I, D'oh-Bot.
- Snowball III, a brown male cat that only appears (and dies) in I, D'oh-Bot.
- Snowball IV (Coltrane), a white male cat that only appears (and dies) in I, D'oh-Bot. He thinks he looks like Bart.
- Snowball II/Snowball V, a black female cat that first appears in I, D'oh-Bot and it's been the cat of the family ever since. To save money from the bowl Snowball V was renamed Snowball II. This is the cat that the family currently owns.
The family cats are normally background characters, although they have had some prominent roles in some episodes such as Old Yeller Belly and the aforementioned I, D'oh- Bot. They are distinguished in the series by the characteristic drawings on the tail. In the former you have less than three ridges of hair. In the last two (II and V) four and five.
Snowball
Snowball, also known as Snowball I was the first Simpsons cat until he was replaced by Snowball II after his death (who has never been shown in the series, since it occurred "before" the beginning of the program continuity). He is first mentioned in the first episode in a Christmas letter in which Marge explains that Snowball died the previous year.
Snowball, according to a poem by Lisa, was hit by a Chrysler. It is later revealed that he was run over by Clovis Quimby, Mayor Quimby's drunken brother (in a parody of what any of the Kennedy brothers, Roger Clinton, Jr., or even Billy Carter could have done). Snowball was named for his white fur, although he is sometimes shown to be very similar to Snowball II. He has been seen in Heaven (in the episode Bart Gets Hit by a Car in which Bart had a near-death experience) and sometimes in flashbacks.
Due to voter fraud, Snowball appeared to posthumously vote for supporting actor Bob, on Sideshow Bob Roberts. In the episode And Maggie Makes Three Bart appears riding a white cat, but it is not said if he is Snowball.
In the real world, many Simpsons publications are humorously dedicated to him. For example, in the Complete Guide to The Simpsons (in which it appears in black by mistake) you can read the dedication 'Let's hope that in cat heaven they clean your box more frequently of what we did'. In 'Bart Simpson's Guide to Life', there is a dedication to him who says: 'Every time we hear a cat meowing at 2 o'clock in the morning Tomorrow, we will think of you"
Snowball in poetry
- Reflections at eight years of age
- by Lisa Simpson
- I had a cat named Snowball
- He died! He died!
- Mom said she slept
- He lied! He lied!
- Why did I lose my cat one day?
- Why didn't that Chrysler get me?
- I had a hamster called stinking.
- He died!
(at this point Homer interrupts and we don't hear the rest of the poem)
(seen in the episode Stark Raving Dad)
Snowball II
Snowball II was the Simpsons' second cat, named after Snowball I. Although Snowball had white fur, which obviously inspired his name, Snowball II is black.
It first appears in Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire: The Simpson's Christmas Special where it is explained that Snowball I has previously died and that Snowball II is the new family cat. Neither Snowball I nor Snowball II are mentioned in the Tracey Ullman show shorts from 1987. For most of the Snowball II series he did not play any role nor was he given much attention despite appearing in several episodes. This changed in the fourteenth season episode Old Yeller Belly in which Snowball II saves Homer from dying in a fire in a treehouse built by the Amish after Santa's Little Helper runs away. Snowball II and Santa's Little Helper seem to have a good relationship, often seen sleeping next to each other, which leads Marge to say in the episode Afraid of Flying that they should get married because "they are living in sin”, Also Santa's Little Helper attended his funeral. Once they both watched television together at night when the others were sleeping. In the segment “Mosca vs. Fly” from The Simpsons' Halloween Special VIII, Snowball II and Santa's Little Helper are placed in a teleportation machine, as a result of mixing their DNA, two new animals emerge; one with their heads and another with their butts. In Treehouse of Horror IX, Scratchy shows a romantic interest in Snowball II.
Snowball II has also had small roles in Bart Gets an Elephant, where he tries to get attention along with Santa's Little Helper, playing a piano, walking on a ball and talking to the Simpsons, in Two Dozen and One Greyhounds where he is scared by the many dogs and in Make Room for Lisa, where Lisa has a hallucination in which she imagines being Snowball II.
In I, D'oh-Bot Snowball II is run over by Dr. Hibbert's Mercedes-Benz G-500. Snowball II was replaced by Snowball III (who drowned trying to eat the Simpsons' fish), Coltrane (who jumped out of the window after being scared by Lisa's saxophone and finally by Snowball V, who was given to him by the crazy girl cats, for which Lisa renamed Snowball V as Snowball II in her words to “save money on a new bowl,” although viewers may recognize this as an in-joke by the writers to the tradition of maintaining thestatus quoof the series.
Snowball III
Snowball III was the third cat in the Simpson family. He was a brown male cat. Lisa adopted him after the death of Snowball II. After going through a skunk, a Siamese cat and a cat with an infected eye he finally decided on Snowball III. He drowned while trying to catch a fish in the family aquarium while Lisa was preparing food for him for the first time. Despite the short time he was with the family, a full funeral was held in his honor.
Coltrane (Snowball IV)
Coltrane was the Simpsons' fourth cat. His name refers to John Coltrane, an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Lisa adopted him shortly after Snowball III's death. She initially wasn't sure she wanted another cat, but her name won her over. When Lisa got home she decided to play him a song in line with her name (the song “Impressions”); The music scared Coltrane so much that he jumped out of the window and died, and although he only lived a few minutes with the Simpsons, a funeral was held in his honor where Marge and Lisa were present. Although his resemblance to Bart Simpson has sometimes been mentioned, in reality his appearance is a reflection of that of the saxophonist himself in the mid-1950s. It is ironic to note that Coltrane is, along with Snowball I, the only black cat. white despite which all the others have been called Snowball ("Snowball"). Since the true name of the last cat in the family is Snowball V, Coltrane can be considered Snowball IV.
Snowball V (Snowball II)
Snowball V is the fifth and current cat of the Simpson family and is exactly the same as Snowball II. He was thrown to Lisa by the crazy cat lady. Because three of her cats had been dying successively throughout that morning, Lisa recommends the cat leave her since he has little chance of living if he stays with her. When he is crossing the road, a car was passing by, fortunately it did not hit him (as it is considered by those who believe in the myth that the Black Cat is bad luck for people), but the car leaves the road and crashes. against a tree and burns (allowing him to collect insurance). Lisa takes this as a sign of good luck. Lisa decides to keep the new cat and rename it Snowball II instead of Snowball V to save the money for a new bowl (and at the same time maintain the status quo of the series). This is the cat that has been in the family since then and has made some brief appearances since then. In the episode The Seven-Beer Snitch, Snowball II (V) gains weight by finding a second family that he also feeds. This new family adopts him and calls him "Smonkey".
