The SMS Dictionary is a dictionary created at the initiative of the Association of Internet Users (AUI) with the aim of reflecting the new chat language that emerged from the use in mobile telephone messages, called service simple messages or SMS.

Several mobile phone operators in Spain have presented the project of a new SMS dictionary that will be called "Hexo x ti y xa ti", aimed at young people, although with many criticisms for the promotion of misuse of language.[citation required]

Description

The dictionary explains the new terms that have emerged from virtual language and their meaning. The new language has its own spelling and licenses will be allowed such as the absence of the "h" in compound times, the elimination of commas, accents and vowels.

The new virtual language includes terms written in Spanish, Catalan, Galician and Basque. One of its functions will be for people to learn to understand this new form of communication. Since young people are the main creators and experts of the new language, which produces the distinction of the individual by groups and collectives, but the older ones are not familiar with how it works.

This particular form of information transmission is beginning to be known as the "millennium communication" since for some time we have been witnessing the replacement of modes of communication such as letters with others related to new technologies (email, instant messaging, chat, SMS) that make our work easier and are characterized by speed.

Bad use of SMS language

The language of SMS has been repeatedly the object of attention by professionals in the area of linguistics, as well as by teachers and parents: it is an evident reality that changes occur in SMS communication at all language levels.. This phenomenon mainly alerted the educational communities and the "guardians of the language" (academies, for example).

Two phenomena come together in writing SMS: on the one hand, the creativity of young people and, on the other, the particularities of the mobile phone.

The main problem that has arisen with this revolution has been that young people have very easily assimilated this new form of writing and have transferred it to other fields in which this language involves spelling errors, absence of punctuation, simple vocabulary, etc.; This type of people are called "chaters".
