Slayers (スレイヤーズ< span class="t_nihongo_norom" style="display:none"> '' Slayers''?), known as Reena and Gaudy (on TV), Slayers (DVD format and Bluray) in Spain and Los justicieros in Latin America, is an anime and manga series based on the series of novels created by Hajime Kanzaka, and illustrated by Rui Araizumi. It tells the adventures of a young sorceress named Reena Inverse, and her faithful friend and bodyguard Gaudy Gabriev. The story takes place in a world where magic, dragons, demons (called Mazoku) and other fantastic beings exist.

In Spain, all the mangas that are related to the Slayers saga have been published, all by Editorial Ivrea.

Anime

The anime is the animated version of the original novels. However, it is not completely faithful to the novels, but rather a readaptation of them by introducing, telling and representing events in a different way. Therefore it can be followed almost as a different continuity than the novels. In Spain it was issued under the name "Reena y Gaudy", (Later it was released on DVD and Bluray as Slayers) and in Latin America it is known as "< b>The Justicieros". There are five anime seasons: Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers Try, Slayers Revolution and Slayers Evolution -R.

Slayers

The first season is based on the first 5 main novels. The events include the meeting of characters, Rezo, the defeat of Shabranigdu and the copy of Rezo and Zanaffer. However, some facts change, such as the introduction of the character of Ameria, which in the novels is later than the events described above; and also by adding more or less self-contained humorous chapters that do not appear in the novels.

Slayers NEXT

The 2nd season is based on novels 6-8. It tells of the appearance of Xelloss, Gaav's conspiracy and both his and Fibrizo's ruin. It is more faithful to the novels in terms of the plot line, but it also introduces facts and humorous chapters that do not appear in the novels or are described in a different way. It also highlights the fact that due to the success of the first part, Slayers NEXT has better animation resources, and in general is visually better achieved. A separate fact is that the continuation of the story from this season follows different versions. The most notable thing about this season is that of the three existing ones, it is the closest to the novels, since it could be said that it is the best story of the three due to the action and the fact that they introduce us to the world of Slayers with more interest and "knowledge". Furthermore, the environments achieved are more similar to those reflected in the novels.

Slayers TRY

The 3rd season is a new story, with no correspondence in the novels (journey outside the Great Barrier, appearance of Valgaarv and entry and ruin of Dark Star). This series is the one that is technically best made compared to its predecessors and constitutes the animated continuation of NEXT.

Slayers REVOLUTION

The 4th anime season of the series, based very loosely on the fifth novel, mixed with an original story. Unlike the previous 3 seasons, this one only has 13 episodes, during which the main group will meet new characters such as Pokota, Ducris, the Marchioness Gioconda and her servant Ozel, and the assassin Zuuma. At the end of the last episode, there are still mysteries that will be resolved in the continuation, throughout the 5th season.

Slayers EVOLUTION-R

The 5th anime season of the series, released on the Japanese channel AT-X on January 12, 2009. It is a direct continuation of the events that take place during REVOLUTION, and like this one, it very closely adapts free some events from the original novels, mainly the 6th.

The group tries to search for the vase that contains Rezo's soul, in order to wake up Tafohrasia, with the help of Nama, a girl with her soul locked in armor because of another of those vases. Zuuma appears again to threaten the group that she will kill someone if they do not head to Vezendi, a city where she sets a trap for them through her alter ego, Ladock Lanzard.

After the murderer is defeated, the group will dedicate themselves to resurrecting Rezo from the newly recovered vase, but the idea doesn't seem so good when it seems that there is something else behind the whole thing. Suspicions become reality when, after awakening Tafohrasia, it is discovered that the ghost of the part of Shabranigudu that Reena destroyed with Rezo, has also been resurrected, and they must destroy it once again.

Movies

These are animated series but made for marketing via video and not for broadcast on TV. Since the objective is different, it has more technical means than TV series:

  • Slayers or Slayers Perfect.
  • Slayers Return.
  • Slayers Great.
  • Slayers Gorgeous.
  • Slayers Premium.

Four of the five films contain adventures of Reena and Naga, while in the last one, Slayers Premium, the rest of the anime's main characters appear. Both the films and the OVAs should be considered apart from each other, and apart from the anime, being neither related to each other nor to the whole, being simply loose adventures.

OVAs

These are animated series but made for marketing via video and not for broadcast on TV. Since the objective is different, it has more technical means than TV series. The OVAs, separated into two series of 3 chapters each, called "Slayers Special" and "Slayers Excellent", return to be adventures of Reena and Naga, but this time half an hour long. They are an animated adaptation of chapters that appeared in the 'Slayers Special' novels, although with some plot licenses. Both the films and the OVAs should be considered apart from each other, and apart from the anime, being neither related to each other nor to the whole, being simply loose adventures.

List of Episodes

The Slayers series is divided into five sagas, below is the original episode list of Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers Try, Slayers Revolution and Slayers Evolution-R

Novels

The novels are the original medium on which the series was born. In them we can distinguish up to 4 different series:

  • Slayers, the main novels that narrate the adventures of Reena and Gaudy, as they would later be adapted to both anime and manga. It has 16 volumes, there are translations into English until the novel 8 of the TOKYO POP editor.
  • Slayers Special, a much lighter novels, with between five and six self-conclusive chapters each, that narrates small adventures that Reena had with Naga before the events counted in the novels of the main saga. It has 30 volumes and continues to be published, although from volume 30 it changes its name, Slayers Smashand starting the number from 1.
  • Slayers Delicious It is a series of four small novels, each with a self-conclusive chapter, which would later be integrated into the Special saga, with slight changes in history.
  • Slayers VS Orphen is a self-conclusive novel, written jointly by Hajime Kanzaka and Yoshinobu Akita, author of Majutsushi Orphen. In this novel, the main characters of the two series keep an affair in a strange world to which they are transported.
  • Slayers Select is a compilation saga that will bring together some of the most well-known chapters previously published in the Special saga. The chapters of the first tomos will be chosen by Hajime Kanzaka and the staff of the Dragon Magazine, while for the rest of the volumes, the chapters will be chosen by a vote of the readers of that magazine.

Manga

In the manga we can find:

  • Slayers, I take unit, illustrated by Rui Araizumi himself, character designer and official illustrator of the novels. It consists of 6 short stories, 4 are self-conclusive and the other 2 correspond to a double chapter. Both in Spain and in Argentina were edited by Editorial Ivrea (in Argentina in a two-medium edition).
  • Chō-baku Madōden Slayers ("Slayers, Legend demonic" in the Spanish version of Ivrea; "Super-Explosive Demon Story" in English), illustrated by Shoko Yoshinaka, which consists of 8 tomos (of which the 4th corresponds to the adaptation to the sleeve of the 2nd film, Slayers Returnand the rest is an adaptation of the first 9 main novels. Published as a series of 7 volumes in Spain by Editorial Ivrea (the volume of Return was published separately as a unitary one).
  • Slayers Special, illustrated by Tommy Ohtsuka (Studio Zombie), with 4 tomos of short self-conclusive stories, based on the novels of the same name. In Spain it was published by Editorial Ivrea.
  • Slayers Premium, a unitary take illustrated by Tommy Ohtsuka (Studio Zombie), free adaptation of the 5th film, of the same name. Both in Spain and in Argentina was edited by Editorial Ivrea.
  • Slayers: Knight of Aqualord, 6 tomos illustrated by Tommy Ohtsuka (Studio Zombie), with a totally new story. Such an adventure cannot be placed at any particular moment in the history of the series, in contradicting certain facts. The author himself has claimed that this sleeve should be treated as a story in a parallel world. Both in Spain and in Argentina were published by Editorial Ivrea.
  • Slayers Revolution, new sleeve that began to be published in the June 2008 issue in the magazine Dragon Age (9 May), and with drawing from Issei Hyouju. It is an adaptation of the story of the anime of the same name. Edited in Spain by Editorial Ivrea, as well as its continuation Slayers Evolution-R.
  • Slayers Light·Magic is a new sleeve that began to be published in the July 2008 issue of the magazine Kerokero Ace (suplement of gift with the magician Gundam Ace), with drawing of Shin Sasaki, and for the first time, with a script that will not be from Hajime Kanzaka, but from Yoshijirou Muramatsu (formerly, this sleeve was called Slayers Future). It was edited by Editorial Ivrea in Spain.
  • Slayers Legend will be a collection in 2 volumes to be released in July and August 2008, and will include the series Slayers, Chō-baku Madōden Slayersand a new sleeve called Shin Slayers: Falshes not Sunadokei, drawn by Asahi, which will see the light in an independent volume in November 2008 (formerly, this sleeve was called Slayers NEO). In Spain, this independent volume was published by Editorial Ivrea under the name Slayers: The Falshes Sand Watch.

Others

CD Dramas

Aside from that, Slayers also has a series of CD Dramas, that is, small adventures in audio format that narrate some adventures. We can find both Slayers EX (Extra) and Slayers N> EX (N> Extra), of 4 adventures each. The novel Slayers VS Orphen also has its own adaptation, as does the film Slayers Premium, of which its Drama CD extends the story, with a prologue and an epilogue to the original animated adventure. Finally, with the new DVD editions of the anime, released in 2007, came new Drama CDs, called Kaette Kita Slayers EX ("the return of Slayers EX") narrating 4 adventures completely unpublished

Video games

Slayers has several games based on the original story, although each one takes its own licenses and cannot be said to be set at a specific time, nor to continue one or other adventures that have already occurred.

  • Slayers, such as, is the name of the first video game based on the series. It came out in 1994 for a series of exclusive computers in Japan, known as "NEC-PC" (this game specifically came out for the "NEC PC-9801" version, so it is known as "Slayers PC98"). It does not seem to have a fixed argument, but a series of small adventures.
  • SlayersAgain, it is the name of the second video game that saw the light, also in 1994 but this time for the well-known Super Nintendo console (originally called Super Famicom in Japan, so the game is commonly known as "Slayers SNES" or "Slayers SFC"). In this, it seems that Reena has lost his memory, and will have to live a series of adventures to find both his lost memory and his fellow adventures.
  • Slayers Royal was the first video game of Slayers released for 32Bits platforms, being first published for Sega Saturn (1997) and one year later for PlayStation (1998). Here, Reena and company will have to help a young elve, Lark, rescue their sister from a mazoku who wants to raise Shabranigdu.
  • Slayers Royal 2 It came a short time later, again first for Sega Saturn (1998) and a year later for PlayStation (1999), but despite the "2" of your title, the story is not a continuation of the previous game, and the only thing they have in common is the appearance of Lark, the elf boy.
  • Slayers Wonderful is the latest video game released to date, this time exclusively for PlayStation (1998). In it, we must investigate what has happened with magic, which seems to have weakened from unforeseen.

Characters

The characters of "Slayers" They fit in a certain way into the clichés of epic-fantastic genre stories, so we have warriors, wizards-sorcerers, priests, demons, elves, dragons, etc. But, nevertheless, they break with many of these clichés and are original in their own right. Below is a list of the most important ones:

Main

  • Lina Inverse (Reena Inverse in Spain and Rina Inverse in Hispanic America): the protagonist sorcerer of the saga, sympathetic, determined, sagaz and fun but obsessed with money and food. You can't stand being told she's not beautiful. It is very powerful and skillful for the age he has, about 15 years at the beginning of the anime, being the Slave Dragon (Matadragons in Spain) his most identifiable conjure, although he is able to invoke minor spells as well as very advanced dark magic and even invoke the Goddess of the Pesadilla. He has played a very important role in all the events in the world of Slayers. It's a very hard head, but it has a big heart. Voices: Megumi Hayashibara (Japan), Marta Sáinz (Spain), Emanuela Pacotto (Italy), Jhaidy Barboza (Venezuela).
  • Gourry Gabriev (Gaudy in Spain and Hispanoamérica): a powerful mercenary swordsman who has self-proclaimed Reena's bodyguard and accompanies her in absolutely all her travels. It is somewhat distracted, forgotten and extremely innocent, but it is very noble, courageous and faithful; unlike what it appears, it is an excellent warrior and always knows what is around it, which contrasts with its distracted personality. When he becomes drunk, he becomes a sophisticated and cult man, as he is seen in the novels. He possessed the mighty Sword of Light, one of the five light weapons also called Gor Nova, who has passed from generation to generation in his family, until he loses it (in the novels he loses it while trying to rescue Reena from the Sea of Chaos and in the anime decides to return it to Sirius after battle against DarkStar). Although Lina, don't treat him very well and tell him among other things "head of jelly" for how dumb he is, he is deeply in love with her. Voices: Yasunori Matsumoto (Japan), Juan Logar Jr. (Spain), Diego Sabre (Italy), Hubertus von Lerchenfeld (Germany), Juan Carlos Vázquez (Venezuela).
  • Zelgadiss Graywords (Zelgadis): swordsman and astral wizard with great defensive resistance, was converted into a Chimera (human part, Demon Blow and Golem of stone) by his great grandfather Rezo the Red Monk, as Zelgadiss longed for power. Join Reena and others around the world while seeking a cure for their condition. He has a lot of affection or in a few words he is in love with Ameria, and is his bodyguard in the fifth season. His main objective is to recover his human appearance, but unfortunately Rezo reveals to him that neither he himself possesses the necessary knowledge to change his state, that is, he will never be able to turn him into a human again, even with Claire's Bible in his power. As a human it has a pale skin and navy blue eyes, with lilac or black hair according to the season. As a chimera, it has lilac and hard hair like metal, the light turquoise skin like the Blow Demon and stained with pieces of rock, like golem. Voices: Hikaru Midorikawa (Japan), Daniel Sánchez (Spain), Claudio Moneta (Italy), Florian Halm (Germany), Carlos Castillo (Carlos Arraiz) (Venezuela).
  • Ameria Wil Tesla Seiruum (Amelia): Princess of Silloon (or Sayruun/Saillune) and priestess specialized in white magic. She is a girl obsessed with justice and a good heart that never yields. Always get used to climbing high places and talking to heroic phrases when there is danger. See Gaudy as an older brother, he's attracted to Zelgadiss, and he's afraid of Reena. His father, the king of Saillune Philionel, has inculcated him from small his values and is the person Amelia most admires. It is usually quiet, reserved and of few words but in the time of battle it is easily excited and becomes energetic and very lively. With bluish black hair, his outfit is always adorned with talismans, has great blue and warm eyes and a bust too big for his age. Voices: Masami Suzuki (Japan), Amelia Jara (Spain), Federica Valenti (Italy), Sabine Bohlmann (Germany), Carmen Olarte (Venezuela).
  • Naga (The White Serpent): it is presumed to be the eldest daughter of Prince Filionel (although it is never mentioned if it is true), heir to the throne of Saillune, and therefore the first princess; as such he had studied White Magic to be a priestess. One day a murderer named Booley went to try to kill her, but she ended up with her mother, the queen, as both were very similar. But Grace witnessed the scene and in a fury start, he ended the life of the killer with the spell 'Chaos String', which his mother had created. After this serious incident Gracia decided to leave the castle, starting his journeys using his mother's old adventure suit and learning magic. A while later she heard of a girl who was said to be a great sorcerer and decided to test her strength against her, becoming her worst rival... that's how Naga, who decided to call herself so instead of Grace, met 'Reena Inverse'. She only appears in the movies and ovas, although it is presumed to appear in the season of the anime Slaryers Evolution-R as "Nama", the living armor Voces: Maria Kawamura (Japan), Veronika Neugebauer (Germany).
  • Sylphiel Nels Ladha (Silfil): Priestess of the city of Sairaag. Ancient known to Gaudy, of which she is clearly in love. Its strengths are healing magic and defensive, but it is able to launch a Dragon Slave. Voices: Yumi Touma (Japan), Marta Sáinz (Spain), Debora Magnaghi (Italy), Anke Kortemeier (Germany), Melanie Henríquez (Venezuela).
  • Martina Zoana Mel Navratilova (Martina): Princess of the kingdom of Zoana, she is crazy and persecutes Reena everywhere because she destroyed her kingdom when she tried to conquer the world. His own god has been invented: Zomelster and he may have double personality. She's very in love. Voices: Hiiragi Mifuyu (Japan), Amelia Jara (Spain), Alessandra Karpoff (Italy), Katrin Fröhlich (Germany), Claudia Nieto (Venezuela).
  • Xelloss (Zeros): a Demon (Mazoku) accompanying the other protagonists, usually manipulating them to follow their plans without being aware. Whenever you ask something related to your plans, answer: I can't tell you, it's secret./That's secret. (Sore wa himitsu desu). Depending on what suits him, he is very powerful, coming to an end in antiquity with only a movement of his hand with thousands of golden dragons, so it is mentioned that his power rivals the rulers of hell. Voices: Akira Ishida (Japan), Enrique Javier Lles (Spain), Simone D'Andrea (Italy), Butz Combrinck (Germany), Luis Carreño (Venezuela).
  • Philia Ul Copt (Filia): a Golden Dragon, Priestess of Vulabazard, dragon god of fire. He commands a mission to Reena to save the world and guides him by the "outside world". He hates the mazokus, especially Xellos, but despite that he esteems and respects him. You saw a white layer with a pink and long dress and underneath it holds a spleen full of thick thorns that usually uses to defend itself while preserving its human form. As you get excited you lose control of yourself and your dragon tail usually shows off the dress. Voices: Houko Kuwashima (Japan), Amelia Jara (Spain), Elisabeth Günther (Germany), Anabella Nuñez (Venezuela).
  • Luke: an exclusive character of the novels. Luke is a sorcerer warrior who, even though he shows himself hard before others, is in love with his companion Mileena, for whom he left his old life as a murderer.
  • Mileena: Luke's mercenary companion. It's a sorcerer who looks very cold to others, and seems to completely ignore Luke's feelings.
  • Lyos: Knight of Aqualord. It only appears on the sleeve Knight of Aqualord and is one of the new companions of the group in their adventures across the Mazoku barrier. Part of the story will be based on its development as Knight of the Aqualord, it is very introverted, due to its hard past; it trusts much in its powers, even though it still does not control them well.
  • Shizuri: Priestess of the temple of the Aqualord. It appears on the sleeve "Knight of Aqua Lord" and accompanies the group on the other side of the Mazoku barrier. Although he has no magic powers, he is able to create illusions. The first thing that asked Reena to see her is that if all the girls across the barrier are that flat.
  • Pokota: is one of the new Slayers Revolution characters, and also appears in Slayers Evolution-R. He is the young Prince Posel, heir to the throne of Taforashia, who was converted (by Rezo the Red Monk) into a strange and small "animal" or stuffed. He created a replica of the Gor-Nova or Sword of Light that Gaudy originally had. It appears in history for its attempt to do justice in the face of the abuse of the Duchess Gioconda of Ruvinagald who stole the drugs intended for Taforashia when it was struck by a fatal illness. Its appearance as a human is that of a preteen child of long lilac hair and mohawk crest with a large golden earrings on his left ear; while in his reincarnated body it is a light green teddy with a smooth hair peel, two ears that culminate in hands, in one of which is his earrings and has a closure along his chest and abdomen where he hides the Gor- He spends his time competing with Reena, causing him many problems and calling her boobs-planes, but eventually becoming more and more friends, as with the other characters.

Secondary

  • Moon Inverse: older sister of Lina Inverse. It's very powerful even if it doesn't use magic. His power resides in that he is the Knight of Ceiphied, and could be beaten alone against Zeross and even with the same Shabranigudu. As annotation, the character of Luna was created by Hajime Kanzaka in his youth for a short story he devised, in which the protagonist was Luna and had a small 10-year-old sister named Reena, who was a technology maniac. It was from this previous idea that he drew several characters for which he would be his first and best-known series, Slayers (Reena and Gaudy in Spain).
  • Rezo, the Red Monk:Akahōsi Lezo in the Japanese version) Main opponent in the first season. Obsessed with his blindness of birth, he made a covenant with Shabranigudu and in exchange for his resurrection he would give him sight, not knowing that his blindness was due to part of Shabranigudu living in his body. In the end, it helps Reena defeat the demon King (Shabranygudu), as in a portion of her spirit had not yet been consumed by the evil and power of Shabranigudu; before she died she explained to Reena that she did not have to be ambitious with her power. Voice: Takehito Koyasu (Japan), José Manuel Vieira (Venezuela).
  • Eris (o) Ellisel Vulgrum) (Ellis): when she was a disciple of Rezo she always wore white and was in love with her master. Try by all means to remove Reena and company to avenge the death of her teacher and since then dress black in the punk style; layer, mini-vested and black boots, including shoulder pins, with hair stripped. Unfortunately, Rezo's copy, which she had created, kills her sadly when she considers that it is no longer useful to her. In the sleeve, the Clon de Rezo is nothing more than the union of a clone with a mazoku, and this, in the middle of the fight against Reena and others, rememorates by flashback the situation in which he acquired his own consciousness and is when he killed Ellis. Voice: Etsuko Ishikawa (Japan), Rossana Cicconi (Venezuela), Amelía Jara (Spain), Rachel Nanstand (United States).
  • Zanglus (o) Zangulus): Gaudy's rival mercenary sword. He ends up marrying Martina. Voice: Domingo Moreno.
  • Chaos Dragon Garv (engagement oriented oriented lyrics,, kaosu doragon gāvu): appears for the first time in Slayers Next, and becomes the enemy of Reena. Reena tries to destroy him with the powerful conjure "Spada Ragna", but does not get it, being Fibrizo who would eventually kill him.
  • Fibrizo: it becomes the big bad one of the last episodes after killing Garve. He hides in the body of a child, although his power is immersed. Finally, Reena ends with him with the superconjure, making the Goddess of the Eternal Pesadilla take over her body and kill Fibrizo. Voice: Kazue Ikura (Japan), Ivette Harting † (Venezuela), Vinnie Pena (United States), Amelía Jara (Spain).
  • Vargaav: Demon at the orders of Garv, who sends him to finish Reena. His first appearance is in Slayers Try.
