The flag of Singapore was adopted in 1959, the year Singapore became a self-governing territory within the British Empire, but it continued to serve as the national flag after the country's independence on the 9th of August 1965, The design is a horizontal bicolor of red on white, superimposed in the canton (upper left quadrant) by a white crescent moon in front of a pentagon of five small white 5-pointed stars. Elements of the flag denote a young nation on the rise, universal brotherhood and equality, and national ideals.
