The shot put or shot put is a test of modern athletics, which consists of throwing a solid steel ball as far as possible.
The current world record for men is 23.37 m, achieved by the American Ryan Crouser, on June 18, 2021 and in the women's category it belongs to Natalia Lisovskaya with a mark of 22.63 m since 1987 And in 1989 it was the first to belong to an extremely multifaceted story in front of the public
History
Ralph Rose, Olympic champion in 1904 and 1908
The first mention we find of the shot put is in the Greek text of the 8th century BC. C., specifically in the'Iliad, in Canto XXIII - 826 and 836, during the Funeral Games in honor of Patroclus:
- 826.- Then the Pelida brought out the iron ball unsuccessful that in another time he threw the Eetion forzudo, to which Achilles had killed, he took his ship the ball and all his other riches. And when he showed it, he said to the argivos, "Let those who want to contend be lifted up in this exercise. The present ball will provide the one who overcomes as much iron as he needs for five years, however extensive his fields are; so that his shepherds and those who work for him will not have to go for iron to the city."
- 836.- Hearing him thus, the intrepid Polipetes was lifted up immediately; then the vigorous Leonteo, who so much resembled a god in his strength; later, Ayax Thelamon, and finally the divine Epeus. They stood in line, and the divine Epeus took the ball and threw it, after turning it over; those who witnessed it let go of shouts of admiration. He threw it the second Leonteo, who succeeded in passing the previous one. At the point Ayax Telamon fired her with her robust arms, making her go beyond those who had preceded her. And, finally, he took the intrepid Polipetes, and how far the cayado arrives when the shepherd throws him over the cow, so much he passed the ball to the space reached by Ayax Thelamon. They applauded all their strength and skill, and their friends took to the ships the prize their king had won.
The modern shot put was born as a demonstration of force in the traditional competitions of Ireland and Scotland. An attempt to standardize this test appears in the mid-18th century and the weight is standardized with English cannonballs that weighed 16 pounds (7,260 kg) and was thrown from a 7-foot (2,125 m) square delimited with a small border, this weight and measure is currently maintained.
The Bullet
It is made of solid steel, its weight is 7.26 kg in men and 4 kg in women. This weight can vary according to the age of the practitioners; in the men's youth category they throw 6 kg and in the women's youth category 4 kg, in the men's minor category they throw 5 kg and in the women's 3 kg category.
Launch and landing areas
The launch area is circumscribed by a circle 2,137 m (7 ft) in diameter, usually made of concrete, with a wooden border around the front. The area where the weight falls is called the landing zone and is an angle of 40º from the launch area.
In the 1896 Athens Olympics and the 1900 Paris Olympics, it is thrown from a rectangular platform painted on the ground or delimited by ribbons. The current circle began to be used at the end of that same century, but it was not until the 1904 San Luis Olympic Games that it was used for the first time in an international competition, but painted on the ground with white lime and on a different surface. to the cement, it is assumed that grass or earth and then a wooden border is added that frontally delimits the launching circle. Subsequently, an ash surface was used, and its use was maintained until the 1952-53 season, when the cement circles with a frontal wooden edge began to appear and favored the movement of the pitcher.
The fall sector was initially 65º, in 1973 it was reduced to 45°, to 40° in 1979 and to 34.92° in 2004, remaining until today.
