Shōgakukan
Shōgakukan Inc. (株式会社小学館 Kabushiki gaisha Shōgakukan? ) is a Japanese publisher of dictionaries, literature, non-fiction, manga, children's DVDs and other texts and media. Shōgakukan founded Shūeisha which in turn founded Hakusensha. All of these companies together are called the Hitotsubashi Group, one of the largest publishing groups in Japan.
Originally Shōgakukan was founded on August 8, 1922 as a publisher specializing in educational magazines for primary school children and teachers in Japan. Over the years, Shogakukan expanded both its scale and range of publications to meet the diverse needs of its readers of different age groups and demographics. Today, Shogakukan is one of the leading publishers of manga and other publications in Japan, publishing more than 60 magazines, 8,000 books, 13,000 manga books, 800 magazine books, and 4,000 DVDs each year (as of 2013).
In 1959 they launched their first manga magazine, Shōnen Sunday with a shōnen theme, later expanding their market with the inclusion of kodomo, shōjo and seinen. Shōgakukan consolidated itself in 1969 by publishing in one of its magazines what became one of the most famous characters in Japan, Doraemon. Other popular manga that have appeared in Shōgakukan have been Hamtaro, Inuyasha, Golgo 13, Detective Conan and Pokémon.
In the United States, Shōgakukan along with Shūeisha is a member of VIZ Media who publishes manga from both companies.
Shōgakukan Manga Award
The Shōgakukan Manga Award (小学館漫画賞, Shōgakukan manga shō, also known by its English name Shogakukan Manga Award) is one of the most prestigious awards in Japan, awarded to the best manga of the year in different categories. This award has been given annually since 1955.
