Shibataea

Shibataea is a genus of bamboo in the Poaceae family. It is native to China, Japan, and Vietnam. It comprises 163 described species and of these, only 12 accepted.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Makino ex Nakai and published in the Journal of Japanese Botany 9(2): 83. 1933. The type species is: Shibataea kumasaca (Steud.) Makino

Etymology

Shibataea: A generic name given in honor of Keita Shibata, a Japanese botanist.

Cytology

The basic chromosome number is x = 12, with somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 48. tetraploids. Chromosomes are relatively small.
