Early Years

Shania was born in Windsor, Canada. She is the daughter of Clarence Edwards and Sharon. Her parents divorced when she was only two years old. Her mother then moved with Shania (then called Eilleen) and her sister Jill to Timmins, Ontario, where she married Jerry Twain, an Ojibwa Indian, who legally recognized the girls as his daughters, so they were both He changed his last name to Twain.

Eilleen Twain's life as a child was difficult: her parents earned little and there was often a shortage of food at home. She did not want the school authorities to find out about her situation because she feared that they might separate her from her family. Due to their poverty, she Eilleen was forced to work and learned to hunt and cut wood. She also worked at a McDonald's restaurant in Ontario. When she was only eight years old, she began singing in a bar to support her family, where she earned approximately twenty dollars between midnight and two in the morning. After a while the bar closed, but people continued to be faithful to her music.

Despite having expressed her dislike for singing in an atmosphere like this at such a young age, Shania believes this was her performing arts school on the path to becoming a successful singer.

Career

Musical Beginnings

When she was thirteen years old, Eilleen was invited to sing on the Tommy Hunter show on the CBC television network. While attending Timmins Vocational School, she was the lead singer of a local band called 'Longshot', which was very popular in the industry. In 1984 she sang a duet with Canadian singer Tim Denis on one of his albums.

Her mother and adoptive father were killed in a car accident on November 1, 1987, leaving Twain to put her career on hold and take care of her younger siblings. She and her half-brothers Mark and Darryl and her sister Carrie Ann moved to Huntsville, Ontario; where Twain sang at the Deerhurst Resort. In no time Shania became the star of the show.

During 1989 and 1990, before signing with Mercury Records, Twain recorded a series of demos with a rock and power pop sound that, years later, would be collected on compilations such as Beginnings: 1989-1990 or The Complete Limelight Sessions.

1993–1994: Shania Twain

In 1991, she was invited to record a demo in Huntsville, Ontario. It was there that she landed her first record deal with entertainment lawyer Richard Frank, the same man who helped Twain legally so she could change her name to Shania (pronounced She-na-ia), a word Ojibwa meaning "on my way".

Twain wrote only one of the songs on her debut album, the track titled 'God Ain't Gonna Getcha for That'. The first singles had very little impact on the charts, "What Made You Say That" and "Dance with the One That Brought You" peaked at number 55 on the US Country Songs chart, and the third single "You Lay a Whole Lot of Love on Me" It didn't even make the charts.

Lange and Twain began work on their second album, The Woman in Me, from which came their first hit "Any Man of Mine". The album topped the list of best-selling country albums for months, reaching number 5 on the Billboard 200 chart. As of 2007 it was estimated that the album would have sold twelve million copies in the United States alone for which was awarded twelve platinum albums by the RIAA.
